Epic Reine 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 They totally didn't include Brad Renfro in the tribute video. I was kinda dissapointed about that. Didn't see Tilda or the french chick winning. Guess I can't always rely on past award history for my picks. No Country winning a lot makes me happy. Such a great film getting the praise it more than deserves. Personally, my favorite was Once winning, love that movie and the song.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 Well, the one thing I can say is that at least Clooney's flick didn't get a heap of stuff it didn't on any level deserve. Tilda Swinton winning is odd to me, especially in a category where Amy Ryan was a lot, lot better in my view. Hell, of the main people in Michael Clayton she was certainly the least impressive (I think Tom Wilkinson should have been best supporting). The major stuff went about like I thought it went, despite my upset pick of Juno. I figure NCFOM would actually win, but let me say this....that movie is bound to now get a MASSIVE backlash against it.
LivingLegendGaryColeman 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 My sister asked for help in her Oscar Pool. My picks got her 10 out of 24. I don't think she will ask me next year. I honestly haven't checked out too many of this year's though, but I did like a few surprises. I kept hearing nothing but Blanchett for Supporting and I thought Amy Ryan was great in Gone Baby Gone. Haven't seen Michael Clayton, but I did enjoy Swinton mentioning the bat suit. I did pick a couple "surprise" ones. I picked the song from Once because I enjoyed the film and song and hadn't seen Enchanted or August Rush. Of course, I get lucky with the songs every year because I picked Eminem and Three 6 Mafia the years they won too and lucked out. Another note of the show, I thought it was cool Amy Adams sang one song that she did in the movie and then came out and danced for another. Not something I'd think too many people would do. Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 Glad to see Tilda Swinton win. I've been a fan of hers since "Orlando". She's an amazing actress that finally got what she deserved. I was also pleased this year's Oscars were evenly distributed to all the great films this year rather than the typical one movie wins six to twelve Oscars bullshit. Meh, I don't really know if NCFOM was really the Best Picture. That ending was just blah. That was the point. With an ending like that, it got people talking and it was a big reason why NCFOM got so much buzz.
CBright7831 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 Transformers is getting robbed, man! ROBBED, I tell you! I almost turned off the Oscars after this. Out of all the mindless blockbusters last year, I'd have to say that Transformers was my favorite. How it lost to The Goddamn Compass, is flabbergasting.
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 I was in no rush to have to refer to Transformers as "The Oscar winning Transformers" but for that category, how did they lose to what appeared to the be the Coca Cola polar bears? Damn Hollywood and their hatred for God.

DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 I fell asleep around Sound Editing - how did Stewart do this year? I enjoyed the montages for binoculars and bad dreams.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 I think he did a pretty good job...it could be worse...it could be Ryan Seacrest! However, nothing will ever top: "Three 6 Mafia:1, Martin Scorsese: 0!"
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 I thought Stewart was pretty terrible, he really shouldn't be hosting anymore. They should try to get Steve Martin every year. Amy Ryan was bound to lose, since they always like to have one upset category.
haws bah gawd 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 I kind of giggled at Colin Farrell nearly busting his ass on the slick floor, walking up to the podium. At first he seemed to be covering well, but then he laughed, walked back to the slick part and slid up to the podium. No one else in the room seemed to find any humor in it. Someone at the academy must have had some kind of vendetta against having to refer to Transformers as an Oscar winner. Really, there was no other movie that had better visual effects. Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 Nothing to write home about this year but I have to say that I'll be damned if "Falling Slowly" from Once didn't completely give me the chills during the performance. That has to rank up there with the best musical numbers the Oscars has put on in a long. long time.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 Travolta almost bit it on that slick spot as well. Transformers, that was the best use of CG I've ever seen (mind you I don't get to see a lot of movies right when they come out so there may have been soemthing better), it should have got SOMETHING. King Kamala 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 I thought Stewart was pretty good but nothing to write home about. I wish they'd invite Chris Rock back but there's probably a one in one thousand chance of that happening again.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 oh no, he pissed off Sean Penn, he can forget it!
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 Chris Rock was funny in that he was an awful choice to host, so watching him be completely out of his element was entertaining. Stewart just sucked
Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 Stewart was average. He had his funny moments and his incredibly marginal, bland moments, which greatly outnumbered the funny moments (which I'd consider to be the tribute to Binoculars and Bad Dreams, the shot at Norbit, playing Wii Sports with the kid from the August Rush song, and "That guy is SO ARROGANT."). Still, I'd be fine with him not ever hosting again.
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 NEW YORK - The Oscars are a ratings dud. Nielsen Media Research says preliminary ratings for the 80th annual Academy Awards telecast are 14 percent lower than the least-watched ceremony ever. Nielsen said Monday that overnight ratings are also 21 percent lower than last year, when "The Departed" was named best picture. The least-watched Oscars ceremony ever was in 2003, when there were 33 million viewers. Nielsen has no estimate yet on how many people watched Sunday night, but based on ratings from the nation's biggest markets, the Oscars will be hard-pressed to avoid an ignominious record. The show had a 21.9 rating and 33 share. ---- I figured 2002 would have had the lowest rating. Wasn't that the year it was continually delayed until they decided to have a non-spectacular ceremony, or did I recall this wrong?
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 well, there's clearly no reason for the show to go beyond 2 hours...there is a LOT of cutting they need to be doing. KEEP: Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Actress Best Supporting Actor Best Supporting Actress Best Song (including live performances of the songs) Best Screenplay (both versions) Tribute to the deceased Lifetime Achievement/Honorary Oscar Do everything else in the beforehand....I'm on the fence about Best Animated Film. Ripper 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 In related news, the Razzies are just fucking bullshit and horrible. I get annoyed every year. they pick one movie, sheep on anything that critics didn't like and just attack the star. I think Lohan won like every award this year just because they felt like picking on her. And I mean, christ, her acting was pretty damn good in the movie. Its just that the movie seemed to have a different writer around about the midway point who just was insistant on making everything suck.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 Yes, you are right. Because of Sept 11th. And fuck that, I loved Stewart. No, you are wrong. September 11th had no effect on the Oscars. The Emmys were moved from mid-September until the first weekend in October and then were delayed again because of the invasion of Afghanistan. They then were held the first weekend in November, opposite Game 7 of the World Series. Not surprised the Oscars were a ratings dud. None of the nominees or movies really stood out to the general public. Last year at least had Scorcese.
Craig Th 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 Was it in 03 then they didn't do the red carpet? Because of the war?
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 Yeah, I knew 9/11 delayed SOMETHING which is where I thought I was mistaken, so bob clarified it was the Emmys (though wikipedia says I'm remembering right about the 2002 Oscars being a lower-key affair). bob_barron 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 From wikipedia- The 75th Academy Awards ceremony was originally intended to be an especially festive celebration of the ceremony's 75th anniversary. However, it was muted five days before the show by the onset of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, which coincided almost exactly with the ceremony. As a result, the hype and tone of the show were scaled back, and some Award winners (notably Adrien Brody and Michael Moore) took the opportunity to voice their opposition to the invasion.
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 Also from wikipedia, about the 74th: Furthermore the tone of this show was quieted by the recent occurrence of the attacks on September 11. Just as the 53rd Primetime Emmy Awards were postponed in 2001, and the Oscar nominations were supposed to come out just two months after the attacks, many wondered if the Oscars would be postponed as well. Frank Pierson, then president of the Academy stated that the Oscars would proceed as scheduled, and to postpone would mean that "the terrorists have won". However, the red carpet festivities prior to the awards, though not canceled, were severely curtailed as now the availability of the bleacher seats were determined by a lottery rather than the first come, first serve basis. Also, there were 26 references to the attacks during the telecast. So, everyone's right... sort of.

Yeah, I think that's fair. I love the Oscars and I enjoy watching the entire thing, but last night after a certain point it was clear that NOBODY wanted to be there anymore (see Tom Hanks, who gave the most rushed, uninterested presentation of the night, which astonished me because it was Tom Hanks) and they just wanted to give the Coens their awards and go home. I mean, does anyone other than people who do sound, their families, and the people involved with the movies nominated really care about who wins for Best Sound Editing? And the problem with Best Animated is that there is almost never, ever any doubt about who's going to win. The only time I can think of where I was wondering who would come out on top was the first (?) year where it was Spirited Away vs. Lilo and Stitch, because I didn't know if they'd really give Miyazaki the win over a critically well-received Disney film and was pleasantly surprised when they, in fact, did. Every year since it's just been, like. If there's a Pixar movie nominated, it wins. Thank you, drive through. EDIT: Also, yeah, the Razzies fucking blow. It's just another chance to take unfunny cheap shots at famous people in the guise of being "humorous."
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2008 I don't understand why they have TWO sound awards presented at the same time - all of the nominees were (basically) the same for both and Bourne won both anyway - can this not be combined into one award?
