WWE General Discussion - February 2008

Recommended Posts

If you were to ask a random person to run off names of current NBA players, how often do you think Tim Duncan would be among the first ten names mentioned (if ten at all)? Duncan is a tremendous player but he's virtually anonymous in comparison to other big name stars like Kobe, Shaq and Lebron. However, Mayweather is one of the very few people, if at all, that a random person would name when asked about present day boxers or MMA fighters.

But you'd have people naming more NBA players than boxers if you asked for overall athletes. I'd say Tim Duncan's name would come up before Floyd Mayweather's name would. It's all about context. However, why are people talking about Tim Duncan? He isn't going to do anything with WWE outside possibly sit ringside for a Raw if it was in San Antonio. The WWE has a deal with Mayweather obviously, so worry about that.

Hulk Hogan — WWE Hall of Famer, reality-show star and now host of the new "American Gladiators" — came by MTV News' New York offices last week, and boy did we start cooking up some fun scenarios of who the Hulkster would like to see battle in a hypothetical "AG" celebrity episode. 50 Cent vs. Kanye West or Game came up, and Beyoncé vs. Mariah Carey (in high heels) was another dream match.

In the wrestling world, though, Hogan still has the passion for the ring. He says he called out "Stone Cold" Steve Austin a long time ago for a match, but the Texas Rattlesnake never hollered back. ("That's on him. Apparently he don't want none. I'm easy to find, my brother," Hulk said.) So now Hogan has another challenger in mind, somebody he's made bleed in the circle before: "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair. As it happens, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon recently sent down the mandate that the next match Flair loses will be his last — he will be forced to retire. Hulk says he's the man to derail Space Mountain and wants to do it at WrestleMania 23 in Orlando, Florida.

"They need a main event real bad," Hogan said. "When I think about Ric Flair styling and profiling, when I think about Hulk Hogan going [head to head] with Ric Flair in my backyard, Florida ... I think that's where it's at. They got a lot of tickets, brother, that need to be sold. The power of the 'Mania, brother? Could be strong. Either he'll put me out for good, or I'll put him out for good. One or the other. That would be the match of the new millennium. Hogan vs. Flair. Maybe get Vince McMahon as a special guest referee. Me and Flair both hate Vince."

No thanks. Flair's jobbed enough times to Hogan already. This would've meant something if it happened 16 years ago.

Yeah, I think Flair is about 1-72 against Hogan. And the one win was a first blood match where Flair actually bled first but LIL' NAITCH refused to stop the match and made it a regular match. And of course, it took Arn Anderson and David Flair's taser for Flair to beat him.

Flait beat him by count out at the Clash of Champions after a masked man (Brutus Beefcake) clubbed Hogan in the leg and had to be taken to the hospital...Hogan heroically returned and was healthy enough to not get beat for real...

...

...

...

I fucking hate Hulk Hogan.

You have to really be out of the loop to not know who Tim Duncan is.

Honestly, I know the name "Tim Duncan", but I really didn't have any idea who he is beyond the fact he's as sports star (and since people in this thread mentioned, I know he's in the NBA). I guess if you don't watch or care about sports, none of your friends or family watch sports, and you don't read the sports section or watch ESPN, it's really easy not to know who these people are.

I mean, I know who the big names like Shaq, Kobe, LaBron James, etc. are but thats about it. My guess is that people who are into sports or hang out with alot of sports fans over-estimate their stars' popularity with non-fans.

It's silly too because there is almost zero shot of Hogan/Flair actually happening. On Raw they already pretty much started the ball rolling for HBK/Flair at WM.

It's odd though, I don't think any promoter ever truly drew the maximum amount of money from Hogan vs. Flair. Vince didn't in 1991-92 and by the time WCW did it both guys were a bit too old to have it be the Dream Match it would have been 5 years earlier. That said, at least WCW got a few 1.00 type buyrates out of it.

Hogan knows that he can play the general media like a fiddle for things like this. He can run his mouth about a bunch of stuff that has no shot of happening, the media will run the story because they still consider him relevant in wrestling, and then it looks as if people are ducking him. He thinks he can go in there and be responsible for the Citrus Bowl having a monster gate (Which it will regardless if he's on the card or not), and then he'll claim it's because of him. Thankfully, he was kept off of the show in Detroit last year because everyone got to see Ford Field jammed full of fans with no sign of Hogan drawing them to the show.

Okay, pardon my impertinence, but I'm dying to know: what does a person who doesn't like sports talk about? I mean, I can understand not liking all sports, but I can't imagine not liking any sports. I'd like to know where you are that you can know more than two people that don't like sports at all...

I also find it strange that so many wrestling fans have no interest at all in sports. I mean wrestling is a fake sport, after all. Wouldn't real sports be the logical progression for fans... or am I making a connection that doesn't really exist?

The logical progression for WCW fans is sports, the logical progression for WWF fans is soap opera or other dramatic fields.

Wait a minute, what's WCW?

Movies, games, books, music etc. There is a lot more to this world than sports. I can safely say that I have about one small conversation about sport with the exception of wrestling per month. Which isn't really a sport.

Yeah, I think sports is only one of many of the logical progressions from pro wrestling. Others include science fiction, Insane Clown Posse, comic books, Kevin Smith movies, and masturbation.

I never watch or talk about sports. Outside of wrestling, I like books... and uh... well, books are fun. Movies and video games sometimes, but I usually just read or watch wrestling.

Hogan's new "promotion";

According to PWInsider Elite, it's not gonna be a normal wrestling promotion. It's gonna be Dancing With the Stars meets Tough Enough. Meaning, it's a show where they teach Celebrities of some fame how to wrestle.

Books, politics, current events, religion, TV, movies, history, science, video games, anthropology, mythology, and other such stuff. I generally only talk about sports when I'm around people I have nothing in common with. I know enough about sports to float a conversation just from keeping up with the news (you'd be amazed at how much headline space gets eaten up by sports stuff). I do occasionally watch MMA, and enjoy it when I do, but if you ask me any real questions about it, I'd have to look up anything but the most basic stuff; I don't keep up with who the champs are or who's doing well, but I do like to watch people kick, punch, elbow, etc. the heck out of one another. However, you don't catch me watching baseball, basketball, football, soccer, or anything else unless I'm stuck over at a family member's house with no way to legitimately escape (Thanksgiving comes to mind).
