UFC 84 - Ill Will

Recommended Posts

I was going to go to Buffalo Wild Wings over in the Village, but money's a bit tight to head out so I think I'll just wind up catching a feed somewhere and watching it that way...otherwise, I'd be acting like a fool for the Tito fight and probably be the only one wanting him to destroy Machida in the first round.

Tito still has enough goodwill in SoCal that this shouldn't be a problem for me.

Naw, I figure that.. I was meaning at the BW3's I was going to. They're a bunch of college guys from Rice and boo'd Tito last time he fought.

UFC 84: PREDICTIONS

Champ B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk- After one of the most dominating performances of the year B.J. Penn is primed and ready to successfully defend his title. Of Course, despite all this I am picking Sherk to win. Against all odds I see Sherk stalling, grappling and outlasting Penn to a decision victory.

Winner- Sherk by decision

Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva- This is the toughest fight to pick on the whole card. If we get the version of Jardine that crushed Griffin and beat Liddell; the Dean wins by Unanimous decision. Conversly, if we get the other Jardine ala the Houston fight he will get KO'd in the 1st. I think Silva can't get any better than he was against Liddell and if the best version of Jardine shows up that won't be good enough.

Winner- Jardine K.O 3RD RD 2:35

Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic

Winner- Reljic submission RNC 2ND RD 3:35

Lyoto Machida vs. Tito Ortiz- If it weren't for the Sherk vs Penn fight this would be the highlight of the night. Machida has looked great in his last few fights while Ortiz has been anything but impressive. The combination of this being the gateway match for Machida and a last chance at revenge for Ortiz makes it hard to pick. I don't think Ortiz will be able to deal with Machida's style and his zeal to prove Dana wrong will leave him open for Machida's counter strikes.

Winner- Machida unanimous decision.

Thiago Silva vs. Antonio Mendes

Winner Silva TKO 3rd RD 2:19

Wanna an AV bet? No way Sherk wins this fight.

I'm going to be ordering tonight. This'll be the first UFC I've watched in a while.

I'm really just a Silva mark...so that's pretty much why I'll be watching. Looking forward to it though...I always forget how much I enjoy watching MMA until something pops up that makes me order.

Thiago Silva mark?

Am I the only person who thinks that Sokoudjou/Nakamura should be on the main card ahead of Gouveia/Reiljic?

Wanderlei Silva.

I spent so much time a couple years ago watching Pride DVDs and being one of probably the dozen people that would order the Pride ppvs that there are a small handful of guys that I'll just want to watch whenever they pop up.

It's why I'd pay to watch Sakuraba fight still...and probably until the day he dies in the ring.

NOVICE FAN PREDICTIONS

* Champ B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk (for lightweight title)

While I, like everyone else, would love to see Penn dominate and humiliate Sherk, I do believe there is chance that if Sherk survives the first 2 rounds he may be able to eek out a decision. Sherk is stronger and may have better cardio, but Penn is better all around. So...

- B.J. Penn; R2, submission

* Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva

Should be a fun fight. Silva always brings it and Keith is unorthodox and odd, which for me, makes a very interesting fight to watch. Having said that, I am more emotionally invested in Silva, and so i hope he ends the downward spiral. I'm going with me heart with this one.

- Wanderlei Silva; R2, KO

* Lyoto Machida vs. Tito Ortiz

I am one of the few who love Tito, and I'm one of the few who loves watching Lyoto fight. Then again, I loved with Sherk/Franca, even if it wasn't the most exciting; I enjoy watching game-plans play out. Lyoto winning would be great because I do believe he deserves a title shot soon. Buuuutttt... nothing would please me more tonight than Tito winning, given the mic, thanking the fans and the UFC, and telling Dana to fuck off. The chances of that aren't too good, though.

- Tito Ortiz; Decison

* Antonio Mendes vs. Thiago Silva

Euro TT vs American TT is pretty cool. I don't know much of Mendes but Thiago is a cool dude. I will always have a soft spot in my heart after killing Alexander last November.

- Thiago Silva; R1, TKO

* Terry Etim vs. Rich Clementi

- Clementi; R3. Submisson.

* Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura

Best case scenerio: Nakamura looking to minimize his embarrassingly awful last preformance + Sokoudjou looking to erase his humiliating loss = Sokou KO in round 1. More likely: Nakamura remains worthless, and Sokou lays and prays for a safe win.

- Sokoudjou; R1, TKO

* John Koppenhaver vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida

I like War Machine, but I like the idea of a juko throw KO more. Shouldn't be boring, which is a plus.

- Yoshida; decision

* Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic

Goran may have the Houston Alexander 'Impressive Debut of the Night'. I could care less about Gouveia, so here's hoping for something exciting.

-Goran Reljic; R1, submission

* Rousimar Palhares vs. Ivan Salaverry

Ivan Salaverry doesn't have the heart for this sport any longer. Look for him to give up an arm or leg if he's had enough.

- Palhares; R1, submisson

* Dong-Hyun Kim vs. Jason Tan - & -

* Christian Wellisch vs. Shane Carwin

I have no idea about.

I hate to be one of "those guys" but this looks so INCREDIBLE in HD. I've had HD long enough that I'm over the whole "so much better in HD" phase but I just got so used to watching UFC in crappy SD that this preview show alone is blowing me away.

It's just adding to my excitement for this show... which was already the most excited I've been in a card since GSP/Hughes 2.

Saved by the bell!

Lyoto just had him in the same position that Hughes finished off B.J. with in their second fight.

HOLY FUCK.

That was almost a miracle win for the ages.

With that said, Machida looked impressive. Dominant.

FUCK!!! HE'S OUT OF IT!!!

The hardest I've EVER rooted for Tito! LYOTO manages to impress me about 25% of the time. He's not as horribly boring as he used to be, but he's still almost TOO evasive. I'd like to see him against somebody who's very aggressive like Rampage, or somebody who is aggressive almost the point of wrecklesness, like a Silva.

Reljic's strikes were very powerful, especially his kicks. If only he would use his jab to set his straights and kicks up, I think he could have knocked Goueveia out in the first.

Wilson is a little shit talker, I'm glad Reljic was able to handle him and shut him up.

B.J. Penn's family at the weigh-in station keeps cracking me up.

At the same time, about three seats away Cung Le looks bored out of his mind.
