I think what people are missing about the AFC East being hard is this:

 

The Patriots are going to win that division.

 

Period.

 

That leaves you fighting for 2 wildcard spots in the AFC.

 

Indy/Jacksonville will decide one division winner and the other is a pretty good bet for a wild card.

 

...

 

That leaves one spot for all the other teams to compete for. God forbid someone has a fluky Bears like year.

 

Bottom line...much easier to make the playoffs in Tampa than the Jets.

There's no question about that. I've heard somewhere--ESPN, I think--that Favre would rather go back into retirement than play for the Jets. If he ends up anywhere, it's going to be Tampa. It's basically a matter of them working out trade details. I've heard the names Brian Griese and Ryan Nece thrown around, as well as a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round draft pick.

Again...as "easy" as the Jets schedule is...barring any weird injuries to a Manning or Brady (and even that probably wouldn't keep the Pats from winning the division) They're going into the season competing with 10 teams for 1 spot.

I'm not sure the Jets with Favre couldn't beat out the Jags for a playoff spot. Jacksonville could be anywhere from an 8-8 team to a 12-4 team.

 

Bear this in mind about Tampa. The Bucs could have been better than 9-7 last year, but for whatever reason Gruden pulled Garcia and they phoned it in the last month of the season, losing 3 out of their last 4. The division was crap though so Gruden didn't want an injury to Garcia and thus rested him, but in reality they could have been an 11-5 type team.

Yeah the Bucs were doing pretty well last year, first round playoff exit be damned and all. I love how it's always the Patriot fans who come around defending their precious AFC East. Fact: The AFC is not necessarily the stronger conference. The AFC and NFC West are equally inept conferences that are usually a phone-in for one team (Seattle and San Diego) with one team wildly threatening for a wildcard spot (Random NFC West Team of the Moment and Broncos) before settling down. The AFC and NFC North are pretty much the same at this point as well. The NFC won the interconference matchups last year, and that's including the Patriots' perfect season in there as well. And, lest we forget, the Super Bowl.

 

Sure, you're going to have the Jags or Colts be working for the 5th spot and then it's a dogfight for the last spot.. And what about in the NFC? The Vikings should compete this year with another year of Adrian Peterson, the Bears should bounce back, and all of the NFC East teams are better. The only reason why Tampa is a better destination is because there's only one other team in the division worth a crap (New Orleans), and even then we don't know if Carolina will have one of their suddenly great seasons. It doesn't get any easier in either conference, but Tampa does have a better chance of winning the division than the Jets do, that is for sure. (And the Patriots have to eventually stumble and fall, especially in today's NFL, right? Right?)

Point is...when you have no chance at winning the division you make it a much more difficult road to the playoffs. And the Jets aren't winning the division if Jesus Christ came down and played QB.

I was referring to the earlier comments. I agree with what you said, for the most part. But making the playoffs isn't that easy in the NFC either, it's just Tampa has a better road to it than the Jets do.

I'm still not convinced Brett still won't be traded to another NFC North team still, particularly the Vikings........we'll see, I guess.

 

EDIT - Reports already circulated on ESPN that Brett is actually not really happy Green Bay jumped the gun and did the trade with New York without his complete agreement.....he was more leaning towards Tampa Bay as of tonight, this is all according to his agent. So doubtful this story is over. If he's not really satisfied with the Jets, this relationship might not last long and New York just might try to pick up another heap of draft picks from Minnesota or Tampa on top of what they are getting from Green Bay.

That approach worked out pretty well last year. Fact is, he was forced into making a decision prematurely, and now the Packers fans have to pay for it. I hope the team goes 0-16 this year (they won't, but still) solely so that Thompson gets fired.
