2008 Stanley Cup playoffs - round deux

Recommended Posts

Okay, the jackass on Versus just said that the 7-0 Wings/Avs game was the last game Patrick Roy played. Seriously, how can you even make that mistake knowing who Patrick Roy is? Like he'd go out on a game he got pulled in.

Edit: Holy shit. Franzen for Conn Smythe.

No it wasn't, Roy last game was against the Wild.

I know. What the fuck, guys? Can't we have a team that knows what the hell they are talking about?

And now we are at the point where the Versus announcers are bored with the game so they are going to ramble on about Wings players who were scratched today. Thanks for great play-by-play, guys!

Do you get the NHL Network or Center Ice, Nightwing? I feel bad for the hockey lovers in the states that can't get good announcers.

It's been a long while since I've been this confident about the Wings in the playoffs. Franzen is just ridiculous right now and they're getting contributions from everyone. I have a good feeling that this could be a championship year. Half way home boys, just keep it up.

WHOO HOO! The Wings ripped the Aves heart straight out.

I've pretty much ignored hockey since the last lockout, but I still watch the Wings at playoff time

Unfortunately, I can't afford it at the moment (Tough times in Michigan and all...), and I'm out in the country where I can only get satellite. So all my buddies who live closer to towns can get the CBC via cable, but I've asked DirecTV numerous times and they won't be carrying the CBC any time soon. Normally it isn't a problem because I find the FSN team of Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond to be fairly enjoyable (And hey, let's thrown in Larry Murphy for fun) as Ken Daniels tends to stick with the play and Mickey is a decent color commentator, but they are done with the second round. All I'm getting is Versus, except for when I hang out with my buddies on the weekends.

Ouch.

Well the Wings proved me wrong, but the winner is coming out of the west again. This is going to be a fun Western Conference matchup.

Pretty much the same deal with me. Great night to be a Detroit sports fans with the Wings/Pistons closing out series and the Tigs sweeping the Yanks.

Shame that Detroit has another good four years left on them, then its unknown. You should really follow them next year.

I figure it's best if we just agree to disagree, Nigthtwing, because I don't think either of us are going to sway the other in the slightest. I'll stick with my original point: I don't think Babcock did one of the three best coaching jobs this past season, and doesn't deserve to be a Jack Adams finalist. He's a fine coach, that seemingly became a much better coach when he went to Detroit. Does that mean he sucks? No, obviously not. But does that mean that he's actually a good coach that would be successful with a less talented team? No, that's impossible to determine.

The one rebuttal that I want to make, and then I'll let it be is in regards to the following:

If you want to bring up Giguere, you should also bring up Tim Thomas, who played out of his mind this season and was easily one of the biggest factors in the Bruins success. That would sort of nullify your point, now wouldn't it?

Are you really comparing the run that Giguere had in the '03 Cup run to Thomas' season? Didn't Giggy go like 6-0 or 7-0 in OT games that year? And didn't he hold the Wild to like 2 goals for an entire 7 game series? His GAA was like 1.50 and his save percentage was well over .900. He had one of the best postseasons EVER. Thomas wasn't even a Vezina finalist. Yes, Thomas' play definitely helped the Bruins. But it's incomparable to compare his season to the amazing run that JSG had.

While it's easier to put up gaudy numbers in the playoffs, let's remember that Thomas was an All-Star game starter and was absolutely fantastic through midseason. The Bruins started to fall off near the end, so I'd argue that his hot start had a lot to do with what happened. It's not as directly attributable as Giguere, you could make an argument that it gave them a big enough buffer to make it in. Also, it helps having the Southeast to beat up on. :P

And if you'd like to continue to debate this, feel free to in the Offseason thread. I mean, I was simply pissed at you because your initial comments go against the grain of everything I've heard and read about Babcock so far, and it just felt really disrespectful.

TimThom didn't start the ASG; he played the third period. And was something like the 6th option for the East, he only went because Brodeur pulled out and <someone who escapes me> didn't want to go because of a family obligation.

Don't get me wrong, though, if I had to make a list of the reasons my beloved B's made the postseason, Timmy Thomas' play would be a definite #2 ... just behind the coaching of Claude Julien (insert smiley face here)

And "disrespectful"? You're the one that told me to fuck off, not the other way around! Having said that - jokingly, I must add - I'm from Boston, of COURSE I'm disrespectful. That's how we're raised around here. (insert another smiley icon here, to reiterate that I'm busting balls good-naturedly)

I could have sworn he started, because I thought it was surreal that Osgood and he would be the All-Stars. Luongo pulled out on the West side, I think because of what you are talking about, which opened the door for Osgood to start.

And when I say disrespectful, I mean in regards to your comments about Babcock. At the time I had been okay with what people were saying (Considering CG being drunk as well), but the whole "two weeks early" comment pissed me off to no end, because I really think that Babcock is a better coach. I mean, max is right in his similarities to Dave Lewis, and I honestly don't think his system would work as well for the Red Wings as it did for the Bruins. I'm impressed by his job, but I'm not sure his system is one that can turn Boston into a contender. Babcock's system has turned the Red Wings around from the "chokers" people thought of them to real contenders with two WCF appearances and (arguably) becoming Cup favorites this year.

But again, let's save this for the Off-Season thread. :)

Watching the San Jose/Dallas series, you have to think that they are simply trying to show off who can choke worse. God, learn to hold a damned lead already...

I love it when someone's team is about to be eliminated or already eliminated, it makes it automatic that the other conference is going to win the title. Because, you know, since your team is now eliminated, no other team in the conference is good enough.

Alright, not a bad start. Two well-earned goals, 1/2 on the man-advantage. We looked a bit sloppy early, but passes are looking better, and the crowd is great.

I'd still like to see a little more effort when there's loose pucks, but I've been saying that all playoffs.

My facebook status said I was going to kill and eat RJ Umberger. I also BBQ'd some hamburgers during the second intermission. Yet, I couldn't tie these two together, ala a Czech sitcom.

Everyone but Joey, help?

Hate the Flyers, but hate the Scabs even more. Glad to see them knocked out. They had no business making it out of the first round.

You know if I was Carbs I would have dressed Ryder and Latendresse in this game.

Two things to bolster for next season. A solid second line player and a good defenceman.

Flyers are going to the Cup finals. There, I said it.

On paper? Yes. In practise? Hell no. There was no reason for the Bruins to take it to 7, and they did. There was no reason for the Flyers to win this series, and they did. I think experience is the missing ingredient here. Then again, I said the same thing would prevent Washington from getting into the playoffs.....

If Ryder had been dressed, it would have been a farewell skate, anyway. I can't find a picture of South Park's Mr. Slave, but:

Jesus Christ!

No way, after last season, Ryder is staying in Montreal, and for a bargin price too.

I just want to give the Flyers their due. They rallied back in a game they should have lost. It just sucks that I hate this potential final 4. I hate Dallas because of the Oilers rivalry, the Flyers are goons, and the Penguins are divers. Go Detroit I guess, unless San Jose pulls off a miracle.
