luke-o 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2008 Superbad sucked. Bad. Jonah Hill = NOT funny. WRONG! Schindler's List as "a bunch of skinny naked people running and dying". Although incredibly wrong, that's a pretty funny description of the film.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2008 If someone described a movie to me as "a bunch of skinny naked people running and dying," I would rent that movie post-haste. ESPECIALLY if they told me a psychotic Nazi sniped at people from his balcony. But why do I get the feeling that your friend(?) used that description in a negative light? Jingus 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2008 Not even remotely a friend, just some douchebag I was forced to share a video production class with. (One time I got stuck on a group project with this cockknocker and some of his similarly intelligent buddies; let's just say I ended up going off by myself and writing, shooting, and editing the whole thing with zero help or input from them.) Yes, he made that statement in a perjorative manner.
CBright7831 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2008 Reminds me of a guy back in school, bout a decade ago, who insisted that Scream was the greatest movie in history and dismissed Schindler's List as "a bunch of skinny naked people running and dying". Sometimes I just want to use a razor-edged clapboard as a guillotine on people like that. I'll bet that guy helped Scream win the MTV Best Movie Award in 1997. Best Movie Winner: Scream (1996/I) Other Nominees: Independence Day (1996) Jerry Maguire (1996) Rock, The (1996) Romeo + Juliet (1996)

Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 I liked Scream too, but better than The Rock? I think not. While I like The Rock better, I think Scream is legitimately a better movie. It's very good at what it does. Bad influence, though. The summer movie category here is essentially best trailer. They should have an award for Best Theoretical Sequel. The Niggardly King 0 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 Jonah Hill really does suck when he has to carry a movie, it just becomes this whiny fat kid who doesn't really know how to ad-lib much more than a "FUCK!" and then he makes constipated faces. But you put that creepy nearly 30 looks like he be 16 fat fuck in a small role or cameo and he's gold.

Dr. Zoidberg 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 I haven't watched it since Jim Carrey won some award and went on stage dressed as a hippy and said, "There's a lot of fine looking pussy in the audience tonight, man." After that, nothing could ever come close. I wanna know why there was no Hitman love. Sure, it's a movie based on a video game, but c'mon! That shit was awesome! The sword fight in the train, Olga Kurilenko's titties...um...Olga Kurilenko's titties... Shit was awesome.

MDH257 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 I'm glad I didn't know Myers and Carvey were going to do a Wayne's World bit. Since I didn't know it was going to happen, I wasn't as disappointed by the fact that it absolutely sucked.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 I liked Scream. I remember back in the day, it was considered practically forbidden to admit you liked "Scream" to other horror fans. I wonder if it still is. Why would it be? It was a pretty good slasher flick. Compared to the piles and piles of absolute garbage that has come out since 1996 (including it's own sequels), I'd say Scream is a downright gem. I guess you could argue that there are no supernatural elements...in that case it would have to be lumped into the suspense/thriller film category with movies like Seven. Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2008 I think this was for people around my age, who were in our mid teens when it came out. And particularly myself, being somewhere between punk and goth, we wanted authenticity, so Scream was seen as too pop. The posers liked it. You're totally wrong about the supernatural thing, though. TCM has no supernatural elements, and you can't call that anything but a horror movie... best one ever.

And particularly myself, being somewhere between punk and goth, we wanted authenticity, so Scream was seen as too pop. The posers liked it. That's kind of how I looked at it. I could make a long list of all the stuff I didn't like about Scream, but most of it boils down to it feeling like a condescending mockery of horror movies than an actual horror flick. Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2008 dario argento suxx0rs No, Argento is the man. Hell, he even produced Lamberto Bava's only good movie ("Demons")
Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2008 Argento is one of those guys whose popularity mystifies me. I've seen three of his movies, and didn't like any of them, and am not sure why anybody would. A lot of people rate Suspiria, but I just found it to be a mostly average horror movie with an incoherent plot and a mean-spirited attitude towards women. Trauma was boring aside from the fact that the director was so perverted to show his underage daughter topless, I mean dude that's just not right. And his Phantom of the Opera was a sickeningly incompetent waste of film; THE worst adaptation of the Phantom story ever, and oh man does that cover a lot of ground. To me, the only worthwhile things Argento ever did were provide the sperm to make Asia and to be a mentor to Michele Soavi, whose Cemetery Man pissed upon every Dario Argento flick I've ever seen from a very great height. Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2008 I will agree his take on "Phantom of the Opera" is bad. As for "Suspiria" being incoherent-that's a point of the movie really. It's not a movie you watch for plot or characterization. It's a movie you watch for excellent set pieces, gore, great cinematography, and imagrey. It's not coherent because it's not really supposed to be. It's supposed to be the cinematic equivalent of a nightmare. The complaints about mean spirited towards women makes no sense to me. Horror movies have had females being killed for ages. Sure, its really violent, and women die in violent ways, but they do in many other horror movies as well. Haven't you ever read Hitchcock's explanation on why he liked to kill blonde women in his movies? Besides, if the movie was too violent to you, then you probably are approaching it the wrong way. If anything, the violence in the movie is exaggerated to-I'm saying it again-the logic of a nightmare. Basically, no offense, but if you can't get into Argento, then Italian horror probably won't be your cup of tea.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2008 I will agree his take on "Phantom of the Opera" is bad. "Bad" doesn't even begin to describe the scene where the retarded ratcatcher and the midget ride the steam-powered lawnmower through the sewers. Or the curious decision to make the Phantom handsome and not wearing a mask. It's a movie you watch for excellent set pieces, gore, great cinematography, and imagrey. But I really didn't think any of that was too extraordinary in this movie. Admittedly I only watched it once, almost a decade ago, so my memory isn't photographic on this one. I can remember some individual scenes, and have completely forgotten others. But I clearly recall being very disappointed after all the hype I'd heard about it, and not finding it very entertaining. Yes, I have read it. I also read interviews with Argento where he talked about how he'd prefer to watch a pretty girl get murdered rather than any other type of human being. I know it's an old cliche of all genre fiction and especially horror films. But I'm saying that it felt misogynistic even by the standards of a slasher horror film. Besides, if the movie was too violent to you, then you probably are approaching it the wrong way. If anything, the violence in the movie is exaggerated to-I'm saying it again-the logic of a nightmare. I don't think I've ever seen a movie which I considered "too violent" for me. (The opening of Saving Private Ryan came close, admittedly.) And yeah, I kinda realized it wasn't supposed to be realistic in the first scene where the girl was stalked, slashed, had her ribcage sawed open, was stabbed in her exposed heart, and then dropped through a skylight with a noose around her neck. If that wasn't a dead giveaway, then the witchcraft, magic, and demons later on should've clued me in. Basically, no offense, but if you can't get into Argento, then Italian horror probably won't be your cup of tea. Don't talk to me like I'm some n00b who just got his first Netflix membership and was shocked to discover the scummy world of giallo. I own a copy of Cannibal Holocaust, fer chrissakes. I kinda sorta consider myself a fan of Lucio Fulci, even though I wouldn't say so too loudly in some social settings. I know the difference between Dawn of the Dead and Zombi. I've even got a couple of older Mario Bava flicks from the 60s. The difference between all of that and Argento is that I do not agree with filmdom's consensus on that one guy. I never liked his shit, and never quite understood why anyone did.
Brocklock 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2008 Well, Phantom was easily the worst thing he's ever done. I'm not the biggest Argento fan either and I agree that Suspiria is really overrated (I enjoyed the soundtrack and the imagery is beautiful, but I just can't get into it overall. It's probably the incoherent factor, I just like movies that have at least passable screenwriting and acting. I also found it to be really dull at points. I don't watch Italian Horror expecting great acting and scripts, but man Suspiria's acting and writing is just really horrible and even worse than than the typical Italian horror film. Although, it isn't quite on the level of the hilarious Burial Ground.) I also didn't like Trauma, Opera, Inferno, or pretty much anything outside of his Masters Of Horror stuff he's directed since 1985. But, Tenebre, Phenomena, Bird With The Crystal Plumage, and especially Deep Red are all very good movies. You should at least consider watching these before you go ahead with saying Argento sucks. He's talented, I just prefer Fulci, Bava, and dare I say Soavi (Cemetary Man is a masterpiece and I enjoy Stage Fright more than any of Argento's films. I wish he would make more films.) for Italian horror.
