Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2004 Guy Mezger, who was scheduled to face Tito Ortiz in the main event of the 10/22 UFC show in Atlantic City, fainted twice in training today, and was hospitalized. It was feared he had suffered a stroke, although later reports indicate that wasn't the case. Mezger is off the show. With just seven days left, it would be most likely someone already on the card will be moved up to the main event position. No decision had been made at this time, but it will likely be made tomorrow. Credit - WO.com Well, that has to suck for UFC. I don't remember the card off hand, so who would be moved up to the main event slot ?
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2004 Hughes vs. St Pierre. Which is the drawing match for me. I am hearing Patrick Cote vs. Ortiz is an alternative, dunno how right that is.
Styles 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2004 Wow, that really sucks for me. I'll be going to the show live, as I got comped tickets, and really wasn't feeling the card as a whole, but seeing Guy fight again was something I was looking forward to. Shoot, can they throw Chuck in there against Tito again? Is Ken Shamrock avaliable? How about Wes Simms, he's a crazy bastard who will fight on a week's notice. RRR, I think I need to read one of your positive, hyped up previews of the show to bring back my faith and excitement in the show!
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2004 John Marsh and Trevor Prangley are off of the show as well, although I think Prangley was replaced. Apparently no one wanted to face Ivan with nine days notice as they called a bunch of guys, all of whom declined.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2004 Dude, I would KILL to see Matt Hughes vs. GSP live. St. Pierre is a fucking god and he will completely destroy Matt Hughes. The rightful heir to the Welterweight throne will be crowned, and his name is King George. OOOH WHATTA RUSH! Lawler vs. Tanner is going to be SAHWEET as Tanner went toe-to-toe with Baroni and Lawler LOVES to throwdown. Both guys have been KO'd before, which means this WILL end in a knockout. The last two Lawler fights I've seen were vs. Diaz and vs. Lytle and they both were awesome. In Trigg vs. Verissimo you have two VERY well rounded fighters going against each other. This may be decided standing given Verissimos amazing BJJ and Triggs excellent wrestling (Trigg won't want to play the ground game and will keep it standing, Verissimo showed surprising standup against Newton). Good match. Tra Telligman has one pectoral muscle. Jeez, isn't that enough?! Rich Franklin makes his return after building up some impressive wins over Tanner and Dewees. I love watching this guy fight as he's a great representitive of what MMA has become. Before losing in Japan, Franklin was looked at as the future of the Lightweight division and I still believe that to be true. How could you NOT want to see this??? It's LOADED. Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2004 According to MMAWeekly.com the current card is.... UFC 50 - OFFICIAL CARD October 22, Atlantic City, New Jersey Tito Ortiz vs Patrick Cote Matt Hughes vs Georges St. Pierre Charuto Verissimo vs Frank Trigg vs Marvin Eastman Evan Tanner vs Robbie Lawler Rich Franklin vs Jorge Rivera Ivan Salaverry vs Tony Fryklund Eastman was supposed to fight Cote, who is now being thrown in with Tito. Interesting. Even better, Igor has dropped to 205 and wants the PRIDE MW belt.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2004 According to Melter's latest update, Tra has backed out of his fight against the unknown Mike Whitehead. Apparently, he saw footage of Whitehead in action, and wanted no part of him.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2004 inside fighting.com After Patrick Cote agreed to face Tito Ortiz in the main event, Marvin Eastman (pictured) needed an opponent. Travis Lutter, out of the Lion's Den, agreed to step up and take the fight on 7-days notice. Lutter is 4-1 as a pro. Well that settles Eastman's dillemma. Interesting HTQ, I don't know why he'd want to back out of that fight when the OTHER GUY is supposed to be worried about lack of training. Even better, he wanted to fight Tito but that fell through. The UFC is insane.
Styles 0 Report post Posted October 16, 2004 Thanks RRR. You always do the trick! Hughes vs. St. Pierre, Tanner vs. Lawler and Trigg vs. Charuto have all got me pumped. I wish Tra Telliman could have fought Tito, since not only would have that been an excellent fight, but it would continue the whole Lion's Den rivalry with Tito, but oh well. I have no idea who this Cote is, and it sounds like he's being set up as job fodder for Tito which is a shame, since I was pretty sure Guy could beat him, but if Cote scores the huge upset I can say I was there when Tito's career died . So Telliman is totally off the show? Why doesn't he fight Eastman? How about Tra's pectoral vs. Eastman's giant forehead gash? Ah, whatever. This should still be good. UFC 49 had a lot of guys I didn't feel too excited about, and it ended up one of the most exciting MMA shows I've ever seen. I guess Hughes vs. St. Pierre is the REAL war of 04.
AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted October 16, 2004 RRR, I'll bet my left nut that St. Pierre loses to Matt Hughes next week. He basically beat a bunch of C-level fighters and Karo Parisyan and all of a sudden he gets a match against Matt Hughes, who's ate guys like him for breakfast for the past two years. Hughes has been there, done that, beat better. As far as Trigg and Charuto, Trigg destroyed Jean Jacques Machado and Fabiano Iha, the two other BJJ specialists he's fought. I see no real trouble for Trigg in this fight. Lawler should KO Tanner unless he gets careless, like against Diaz. As for the rest of the card, Franklin vs. Rivera looks interesting but other than that UFC's 50th show is gonna be a BIG dissapointment. As for Telligman, he fought fuckin' IGOR on like a week's notice so why he should back down against this Whitehead guy is beyond me.
Styles 0 Report post Posted October 16, 2004 As for Telligman, he fought fuckin' IGOR on like a week's notice so why he should back down against this Whitehead guy is beyond me. Total speculation here, based on the rumors. Maybe, when Guy went down, Tra requested to fight Tito, he was refused because they wanted to feed someone for Tito to look good against rather than challenge him, Tra is insulted and refuses to fight. I don't know, that's the best I've got. I'll be cheering hard for this Patrick Cote guy. Fun fact: Both main events feature young Canadian fighters (St. Pierre and Cote). As for a St. Pierre/Hughes winner, that's really tough. Benoitrulz is right that Hughes was on top for 2 years destroying everyone in his path until he came in under prepared for BJ Penn. I see this as kind of the Welterweight version of Belfort/Couture in that if Hughes can neutralize St. Pierre in the clinch and wrestle him down he can dominate him, but if Hughes leaves himself open, St. Pierre could hit a knockout blow. Would that be an accurate assessment?
AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted October 16, 2004 St-Pierre is no slouch, but when you look at guys like Sean Sherk and Frank Trigg, you see better fighters who've beat better competition, and you also see Hughes handling them soundly in the ring. Sure, Sherk took him to decision, but he pretty much controlled the entire fight and took it where he wanted. Trigg is an extremely underrated fighter. He's crushed everyone he's faced, and he was crushing Sakurai before he caught a fluke knee. He gave Matt Hughes a pretty tough five minutes before Hughes got his back and choked him out. That just goes to show how good Hughes is. As far as his match with Charuto, I think Matt was playin' it safe, and wanted to get a victory against a good opponent so he could back into the swing of things in the WW division. Hughes beats St-Pierre, end of story. Although anything can happen in MMA
Masked Man of Mystery 0 Report post Posted October 16, 2004 When you guys say Igor, are you talking about Igor Volchanchen(or however his name is spelled)?
AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted October 16, 2004 Yes. And it's Vovchanchyn He's probably the only fighter (maybe Sakuraba, as well) who is universally liked and will always be liked for as long as MMA exists. Very cool guy, in and out of the ring. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 16, 2004 UFC 50 is St. Pierres coming-out party. There is no one in the game that possesses the physical attributes and raw, natural, talent that Rush has. Not Matt Hughes, not BJ Penn. The War may be in 04, but the future is now. G-S-P is G-O-D. I'll bet BR4L's right nut on it.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 16, 2004 Trigg has not faced anyone with the size and skill of Charuto. Charuto should be a lightheavyweight given his frame, and that _will_ be a factor in the match. I disagree with this show going to be a disappointment. The expectations aren't high for it in the first place, and they have 4 solid, competitive matches, and the other bouts could be nice squashes. Maybe we're spoiled by the 8 Headline Matches that Pride doles out ( ), but shit, isn't this good enough for you all!!

Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted October 17, 2004 Big play on the title of the Card, comparing it to 1812 It's stupid, but fun. Here's to Canada owning come October 22 Probably will go 0-2, but who knows?
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2004 Next ROTR card: Wes Sims vs Antoni Hardonk BJ Penn vs Rodrigo Gracie Carter Williams vs Tom Howard Royler Gracie vs Kazuyuki Miyata Cabbage Correria vs Yoshihiro Nakao Sean O'Hare vs Shungo Oyama Kirk Kipapa vs Spencer Canup Faliniko Vitale vs Kristof Midoux Luciano Noguiera vs Danny Steele Ross Ebanez vs Nathan Diaz Kaynan Kaku vs Gilbert Melendez That's right, it's the one you're all thinking of. Didn't know where else to post this, and didn't think it was worthy of its own thread. Wes Sims tried out for Tough Enough, so I guessed that's like 1.5 AMERICAN pro wrestlers on this show. It looks like a solid card anyway, and apparently Sean has been training in muay thai so let's hope that he knocks Shungo the fuck out in Round One.
AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 He trains Muay Thai at my gym. BTW, RRR, I lost my first Muay Thai fight 3rd round ref stoppage. I got hit with good punches from the end of the 2nd through the rest of the fight, resulting in a fractured nose. Still fun though, but my punch defense needs definite improvement. It will get tested on Nov. 6th when I fight a guy who all he does is punch, albeit without good technique. Hopefully I can avenge my loss from last week. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 Without having stepped in the ring and gotten hit myself, HOW COULD YOU DO THAT?! Geez, what's so hard with putting your elbows up to protect your head when your opponent aims at your head and putting your elbows down when your opponent aims at your body? Geez, if I can do it in Fight Night 2004, you should be able to do it! Hey, on the bright side, you didn't get knocked out and you possibly have a good chin. How about you come up to Canada and lemme hit you in the head a bunch of times?
AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 I was a train wreck after the match. There was blood on my face, chest, trunks, legs, even my cup. I used to have a real lazy stance, with my hands around my chin, needless to say they now stay up around my temples. It's a little hard to learn punch defense if you've never fought in a real match before, which before then, I had never done (except for that Tough Man match a year ago, ughhh). Now that I've experienced full speed punches coming towards my head, I will be considerably wiser. It's amazing how much you learn in one fight.

I am gonna train wrestling and BJJ soon, in two different GTA (Greater Toronto Area for those not in the know) clubs. I can't wait for that. AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 Rick Davis's Champion Muay Thai gym out of Statesville, North Carolina. Rick knows fighters like Mo Smith, the Roufus brothers, and Mike Bernardo, and Ken Shamrock used to go up there back in the early 90's, before even his Pancrase days. Sean has been in California the past couple months. We had another heavyweight he used to train with at my gym who said his stamina is suspect, but that's probably something he's been working on in Cali. He'd probably kick my ass for saying that Funny story about Sean and some kid at the gym. This kid just comes up and starts bothering him out of nowhere, and Sean is all like "Who the hell is this?" The kid keeps bothering him and Sean keeps getting progressively more pissed while everybody else in the gym is trying to hold back their laughter. Just picture a big, mean, angry-looking guy chasing this annoying kid around the gym and you'll get what I mean.
