RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 I haven't finished watching the DVD (I bought and taped it live, but I needed Diaz/Parisyan in full), but I thought Liddell/White was a FOTYC (my FOTY was Parisyan/Diaz); Lytle/Jhun, IIRC, had awesome wrestling psychology with Lytle continually going for the guillotine and finally getting it; Justin Eilers had a break-out fight against Kyle; Yves Edwards/Thomson was great; Riggs/Dirte was good; the only disappointment was the main event, which I am hoping improves on a second viewing. I think UFC 49 is the best UFC show, from top to bottom. But it has some pretty stiff competition.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 I loved the main event, but I'm a big Couture fan, so I'm naturally going to like him grounding and pounding Vitor into a bloody mess. Not to mention the great visual of Couture's white trunks slowly turning into pink ones from all of the blood.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 Interesting note; actually won a MMA radio contest on that MMAEvolution show, and they sent me the stuff late, aka not at all. So I emailed them, and I guess to make up for it they sent me a whole bunch of shit, one of which was the one DVD I was actually planning to buy, UFC 49. I was so happy, it's unbelievable. Anyways, I felt that Diaz/Parisyian, at least the first two rounds, was non stop action. Of course they slowed it down due to being tired, but still those guys provided the fans with a grappling clinic. There's lots of talk of Parysian(how do you spell it?) getting a shot for the WW Title once he beats Serra. But I don't know. I feel that if he was in a stalemate with Diaz, that Serra will be able to tool him, but we'll see. I didn't think Chuck/Vernon was as great as you did, it was a little sloppy. They went hard, but sloppy nonetheless. Provided a good line though "I'm not afraid of how hard Chuck hits, Ken hits me harder in the Den" Riiiiiiight. Couture's beatdown of Vitor was awesome if only for the white shorts being pink by the end. Great visual. Terrell KO'ing Matt Lindland was awesome too. Which is why his new bit for respect amuses me. Does he not remember why he didn't get a title shot? Because Dave Terrell Knocked him the fuck out? Or did we all just forget about that piece of history? Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 Pride 18. Worth getting or not ?
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 (edited) As I recall there were a couple good matches (Overeem/Igor, Takayama/Schilt), Goes/Steibling was solid. I haven't watched it for a while though. If it is 10 bucks like I picked it up for go ahead, if not I would probably not worry about picking it up. FYI, apparently Best Buy is going to be carrying the newer Pride DVDs as they have Total Elimination 2004 and Championship Chaos 2 on their website as in stock and have three more releases on July 12th. I am going to be hitting the store Friday, I'll see if they are in stores or just online. Edited June 1, 2005 by the pinjockey
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 If there are other things to buy (coughPRIDE20cough), don't get PRIDE 18. It's not really historically significant, unless you want a set up for Vovchanchyn vs. Alistair Overeem. SPOILERS I think the lumps on Otsukas head after Wanderlei gets done with him, and Takayamas head bouncing against against Semmy are pretty good reasons to get it. I can't recall Ninjas fight or Horns' though. Jacksons fight is disappointing. PRIDE 19 was better also.

Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 (edited) RE: PRIDE 18- The only match I remember standing out as pretty entertaining was Steibling/Goes. Overeem dissapointed as usual, Horn blew another big opprotunity to impress on the big stage, Wanderlei let Osuka be more competitive than need be, etc. BTW- I'll try to ge some ADCC pics up soon, hopefully including one of Garcia splattered on the mat after Ricco squashed hm. the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 (edited) From Sportsbook.com: Nathan Quarry -220 vs. Shonie Carter +180 Um, am I missing something here. Is Quarry supposed to be some unstoppable force that I am underrating or what? Andrei Arlovski -325 vs. Justin Eilers +250 Evan Tanner +105 vs. Rich Franklin -135 Matt Serra +145 vs. Karo Parisyan -175 Nick Diaz -325 vs. Koji Oishi +250 David Loiseau -225 vs. Charles McCarthy +185 Nathan Quarry -220 vs. Shonie Carter +180 Forrest Griffin -135 vs. Bill Mahood +105 Paul Buentello -450 vs. Kevin Jordan +300 This seems like one of those cards where you throw a hundred on each of the dogs against Arlovski, Diaz, and Buentello as there is a decent chance you will get at least one upset out of the three to break even and can really strike big if two upsets happen. Is Quarry supposed to be some unstoppable force that I am underrating or what? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No, Shonie just hasn't had success at 170lbs for quite a while now, and is now fighting at 185, where's he's had even less success in the past. the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 Question: Has anyone seen a single commercial for this weekend's UFC event? I am trying to think and I can't recall seeing a single ad other than the couple previews they ran on UFC 52.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2005 RE: PRIDE 18- The only match I remember standing out as pretty entertaining was Steibling/Goes. Overeem dissapointed as usual, Horn blew another big opprotunity to impress on the big stage, Wanderlei let Osuka be more competitive than need be, etc. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I obtained PRIDE 18 anyway, though I skipped most of the fights. Steibling v Goes was decent, but nothing that hot, with the highlight for me being Goes having Steibling trapped in an armlock, complete with wrapping his legs up as well, and Steibling still escaping. Something similar happened a little later with an armbar as well. I somewhat enjoyed Ninja v Andrade, but only because Ninja was just totally dominant, and left Andrade's face looking like a big mass of splotches from all those punches. It would have been better had Andrade not kept hold of Ninja in the later stages of the fight in an attempt to survive.
AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2005 (edited) Maeda has signed Alexandre Franca "Pequeno" Nogueira to fight at the next HERO's card. I guess that means he's moving up in weight, he also has the best guillotine choke in the business, with seven of his twelve wins coming from that particular move. Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2005 Definitely. Go Van Arsdale. I have now heard GSP say that he will be fighting Trigg at that event, making it a match that I may be looking forward to more than either of these two. I love both guys so I will definitely be torn for that one. I hate Horn so Chuck better not drop the ball here. I guess all he has to do next is fight Rampage and be done with it. Seriously though, Van Arsdale?
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2005 I'm not sure what Horn has done in the UFC recently to earn a title shot. Then again, I'm still trying to work out how Justin Eilers got a shot at the Interm Heavyweight title when he his last UFC fight saw him do a shoot Flair flop after getting knocked silly by Paul Buentello. Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2005 UFC has announced the two main events for UFC 54: Boiling Point, which will take place on 8/20 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The matches are Chuck Liddell defending the light heavyweight title against Jeremy Horn and Randy Couture vs. former NCAA wrestling champion Mike Van Arsdale. The coaches for the second season of Ultimate Fighter will be Matt Hughes and whomever wins tomorrow night's match between Evan Tanner and Rich Franklin. Styles 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2005 I'm just underwhelmed by that card. A lot of potentially boring or one sided fights. After the last Pride ended up such a dissapointment, I'm a little wary to be spending 30 dollars on them again. Maybe for the finals.
