MMA Comments that Don't Warrant a Thread

Ortiz/Frank Shamrock was the one fight that made Frank realize that there were no more scrubs to fight in UFC so he retired. Back at around the time of UFC 22 the talent pool was stacked with Henderson, Lindell, Wanderlei Silva, Sakuraba and Frank Shamrock feared real competition.

Not entirely true. Henderson was in Rings by that point, Saku and Wandy were signed with Pride, and Liddell was a relative nobody at that point in his UFC career.

Does an yone know how far they plan on going with these UFC Classics DVDs?

They're up to UFC 6 and pretty soon they'll get getting to where a lot of famous older fighters started and that might be entertaining for nostalgia.

I really want to know if they're going to do the ones that they don't have on VHS, from the missing era or whatever(why aren't those on tape anyway?) from UFC 22-29. I mean I hear the fights might've sucked during that era but I'm kind of a completist AND I want to see stuff like Ortiz/Frank Shamrock.

Also what is PANCRASE? And is it worth picking any older ones up?

At least the Pancrase question! And was Shamrock/Ortiz any good? Frank Shamrock that is.

Pancrase; depends on whether you mean old or new. Old has modified MMA rules: no closed fist strikes, standing or on the ground. Many fighters such as Bas Rutten, Masakatsu Funaki, Minoru Suzuki, the Shamrocks, Guy Mezger, Yuki Kondo, and Maurice Smith fought in it. IIRC, Jushin Liger and TAKA Michinoku fought once a piece in it. New is more or less Pride rules, with maybe a few tweaks, though I haven't watched a show since Barnett fought Yuki Kondo.

Shamrock against Ortiz was great, pretty legendary fight.

So what about Shamrock showing up at the first UFC as the King of Pancrase? Did that really mean much? So Pancrase was MMA before MMA?

UFC always acts like they invented MMA but that's not true is it?

Is it worth checking out?

Oh and I said waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay earlier in this thread that I liked Arona. This was after only seeing one fight of him where he was very vicious. Now after viewing more Arona matches I suddenly HATE him.

Yeah, Pancrase was MMA before UFC. A pretty watered down, slightly sissyfied, slaphappy version of MMA, but yes. They had more fighters with a general knowledge of MMA than the UFC did at the start, though, which always made me think of how awesome Pancrase would have been in the early days with full MMA rules.

Meh. I think a majority of Pancrase fighters sucked pretty badly without works and pussy rules to back them up, much like a few SHOOTO guys had to learn at the early JVT's.

EDIT: The similarities between the two are the pussy rules and mediocre grappling, not the works.

Well, compared to some of the guys the UFC was bringing in they were Fedor level.

I didn't feel like bumping my Recent Purchases thread but I bought TUF2 on DVD today after it was finally released in Canada and it was worth it, not so much for Diaz/Diego (which 90% of my purchase was based on) but for one simple thing:

You get backstage footage of Diaz throwing the shoe.

If Fedor thought giving up back control to grab a foot was a good idea, maybe. It's moot though, as Brazil had better fighters long before.

I'm shocked there's no talk of this.

Kazushi Sakuraba collapsed during training. It's been found, according to Fight Opinion that he had a blockage of an artery going to his BRAIN, and that this could be a precussor to a stroke. He's off the 10/9 HERO'S show.

...Sickeningly enough? They want him to still fight on NYE. The Japanese promotions aren't gonna be happy until he fucking dies in the goddamn ring.

What's the difference between UFC and Pride besides the whole ring/octagon thing?

UFC = elbows are allowed, kicks/knees to a downed opponent's head are not, gis and shoes aren't allowed

Pride = reverse all the above
