If the UFC is doing it with Henderson/Rampage, whats the difference with Elite XC/Strikeforce doing it? Ninja/Shamrock would be the best available fight at for them, so I want to see it. Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2007 --Some notes coming out of the Frank Shamrock vs. Phil Baroni fight. Both came out of it in a war. Shamrock's injuries were a completely blown ACL (not just torn, but it appears he no longer even had one) and a torn MCL from sparring with Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou on 6/11. He had no business walking, let alone fighting and he could do no cardio training from that point on. He was shopping last week in one of those motorized carts that handicapped people use. I saw him train a few days earlier and his cardio was more than there, but two weeks on your back will take your cardio way down, and realistically, he had very little time to win and it completely destroyed his game plan of outlasting Baroni over 25:00. Baroni went into the fight with a hernia and probably had no business fighting. Both needed surgery before the fight. Baroni suffered a groin injury, he told me after he thought it was a pull, but it may have been a tear, during the first round, but he has all black and blue down there. Some of the biggest names in the sport would not have fought with either of the injuries both men came in with. Many others would have. Most top fighters who have mileage on them and are past 30 are coming in hurt to a degree but usually not to anywhere near that degree. The atmosphere live was incredible. It beat Tito Ortiz vs. Chuck Liddell for tension. I can't compare it with Couture vs. Sylvia live because I wasn't there, but it probably wasn't at that level. It makes the fight even more remarkable, and it was great already. I hope we see a rematch when both men aren't so banged up going in. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

It's going to be very interesting to see who Strike Force puts up against Cung Le next. A Shamrock/Le match would be just as big, if not bigger then Ninja/Shammy. He can beat cans like Fryklund and Von Flue, but Frank Shamrock could possibly ruin his MMA career. It's not like this is a WW title situation where BJ has a claim as a former champion. It isn't out of the realm of possibility that he could cash in that chip... 4 years later.... Fact is, BJ Penn is one of the few draws they have in the division. While we all love the prospects and can't wait to see them blow up, they are just that and it takes time for such popularity. In the meantime, Penn vs. Sherk (or Penn vs. Franca) is one of the better matches they can have on top (or near the top) of a card. In the time between these fights, the division can continue to grow and develop and Zuffa won't have to give bullshit title shots away to guys that are unproven at 155 and instead give them to guys like Tyson Griffin, Clay Guida, Frankie Edgar, Mark Bocek, Roger Huerta, etc.. He showed lots of heart coming back against Evans, but that's not a guy that a title contender should be falling behind against. Evans was a very good wrestler and put tons of pressure on Huerta. It's kinda hard to look good against that style of fighting. And selfishly I want to see him win the title at 155 and then go up to 170 and challenge for the WW title and hold both belts simultaneously. The only thing big about B.J. is his head. I kid, although he does have a huge noggin. Virtual planetoid, has it's own weather system... The thing about Penn is that he seemed to be perfect for Pride's LW division in terms of size. In the UFC he seems to be caught right in the middle of LW and WW. That's not to say that BJ wouldn't rip through most - if not all - of the mid-level 170s but I think that the size differential would eventually get to him. At 155 he could probably dominate, but then again the lightweight division has that "On any given Saturday" feel to it - throw two guys in and either one could win, unless they're nicknamed "Monstah" or "Butters". The thing is it's risky to have smaller guys headline a PPV, just because of the mentality of the fans. I think if they bring in a guy like Gilbert Melendez or Takanori Gomi, they could headline PPV's with that after a couple of introductory fights to let people know how good they are. The UFC almost seems gunshy now to invest money into building a fighter given the unstable nature of the sport. However, TUF is still their best weapon. Not because of the popularity of the winners that come out of the show, but rather, it gives them 8 or so guys they can put on a card to feed to other, better, fighters. So rather than having, say, Clay Guida go over Joe Fuckstick, a win by Clay over Emerson will mean more, simply because the fans know the guys involved, so automatically their interest is higher than with unknowns. Mik 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2007 Yeah so I saw Tamdan McCrory at the gym today. If it wasn't him, it was another lanky dude with a scruffy beard and glasses that looks just like him. He was three machines over from me when I was doing cardio. Luckily there was a hot chick between us so I didn't look like a total idiot looking over constantly trying to figure out if it was him or not. I'm 95% sure it was. Baroni, who was injured going into the fight and tore his groin off the bone early in the fight, has been suspended for one year and fined $2,500. For those who don't know, Leben fought Swick in WEC a few years back and dropped him like a bad habit and Swick's wanted the rematch since then.
