MMA Comments that Don't Warrant a Thread

I think that while Koscheck and Fitch might have better wrestling pedigree's then Shields they don't use their wrestling as effectively. If you look at their records vs Jake's he's had less decisions and finishes everything on the ground in the first round. Contrast that with Fitch and Koscheck who use their wrestling to control en route to a decision.

Koscheck and Fitch are more well rounded and better strikers then Shields as well...

I don't know how old this video is... But here is a youtube video of Shields beating Fitch in a Submission Grappling tournament:

From what I hear though they are 1-1

Strong words from Spike TV after a repeat of UFC 84 outdrew EliteXC in 18-49 males (goodnight, sweet prince to EliteXC!)

Need proof the UFC is the preeminent mixed martial arts brand in the world? On Saturday, July 26, more men 18-34 watched a repeat…a repeat…of a UFC event on Spike TV than a LIVE telecast of a Pro EliteXC championship card on CBS. Despite being available in over 17 million more homes, Spike TV drew 27% more Men 18-34 for a re-broadcast of “UFC 84: Penn vs. Sherk” from (9:00-12:00am ET/PT) than CBS’s live show (9:00-11:00pm). Spike TV’s telecast tallied 433,000 Men 18-34 to CBS’s 341,000. Overall, “UFC 84: Penn vs. Sherk” drew higher ratings than Pro EliteXC in Men 18-49 (1.5 to 1.3) and Men 18-34 (1.5 and 1.0). Reminiscent of the XFL’s rating collapse years ago, the CBS telecast was 69% lower in Men 18-34 and 57% lower with Men 18-49 than its initial broadcast on CBS in May featuring the “He Hate Me” of MMA, Kimbo Slice.

Also, SI is reporting that Rampage was hearing voices and thought he was a god when he went on his little bender. That's not good.

UFC Fight Night 14 headliner James Irvin, who suffered a first-round TKO to Anderson Silva in the July 19 fight, tested positive for methadone and oxymorphone, according to a urinalysis conducted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer today confirmed the test results in an email sent to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

Irvin has 20 days to request a formal hearing. If the ruling is upheld, he would then face a likely suspension of six to 12 months and a fine of up to $20,000 -- his full fight purse for the event.

Methadone is a synthetic opioid usually used in treatment of opioid dependence for drugs such as heroin, though it can also be prescribed as a painkiller. Oxymorphone is a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic (painkiller) often used for the relief of moderate to severe pain. The NSAC has approved neither prescription drug for usage by MMA competitors.

Silva and 10 other UFC Fight Night 14 fighters voluntarily submitted to a urinalysis during the event. All but Irvin tested clean.

UFC Fight Night 14, a late event booking that countered Affliction's debut pay-per-view event, took place at The Palms Las Vegas and aired on Spike TV. Irvin headlined a UFC event for the first time, and his fight with Silva peaked with a remarkable 4.5 million viewers.

That same SI article mentions that Rampage has fired Juanito as his trainer. Rampage needs to give an interview or something because the gossip is going to run wild.

BJ is more of an offensive JJ guy, though. Not saying he doesn't have skills off his back, but I can't recall a single time he subbed someone from guard in MMA. A guard game is totally different and easier to counter if you know what to look for, and GSP should at this stage of his career. GSP is good enough to avoid what BJ throws at him, and strong enough to hold him down. Points, Points, Points. Hughes tapped George when Rush was on his back, so if you made the argument that BJ could take GSP down and tap him, then you would have something, but the likelihood of that is slim.

When was the last time BJ actually had to use his guard?

It's so difficult to actually takedown BJ, especially a motivated BJ that actually is training. You could honestly tell me with a straight face that the BJ who GSP was able to takedown, is the BJ of now? GSP might be able to takedown BJ, but it's going to be a lot more harder now that BJ is actually hungry and motivated to be the best in the world.

GSP has taken down some of MMA's best wrestlers _ever_. Motivated or not, BJ Penn isn't a NCAA National champion. You can argue other points all you want and however you want, but using "motivation" isn't going to make BJ a better wrestler than Matt Hughes, Sean Sherk, Frank Trigg, or Josh Koscheck... all of whom GSP took the fuck to the mat.

In case you forgot though, BJ was able to stuff both Hughes and Sherks shots... And embarass Matt Hughes on the ground.

Motivation is going to make BJ work on his already great takedown defense making it even more deadly.

Didn't Sherk go for, like, one takedown? Which was a half-hearted one? And was it the last time BJ saw Hughes in the ring, he was on the bottom getting pinned down and beat to shit?

LOL @ "deadly" takedown defense.

LOL @ mythical motivation.

Its okay, I'm sure that when GSP loses to BJ..it'll be due to his father having another near-fatal illness.. his entire social life falling apart and English becoming the major language in French-Canada.

Jess Taylor was released by the UFC... his comments about Rampage were what most likely sent him out the door.

And Roger Huerta is speaking out against the UFC and the payscale in the (excellent as always) FIGHT! Magazine cover story. I've probably mentioned it 5-7 times in this forum already but everyone here should subscribe to this magazine. I read it cover to cover every month and they always have oustanding work in there.

But if more and more people say they aren't making enough... what's Dana going to do? Fire everyone?

Rampage criticized his behavior on the show and after Quentin's little incident they asked Jesse his opinion and he said something to the effect of "what goes around comes around". Apparently that made Dana furious.

Yeah, just read that. He also said that if he were an ex-champion when he'd pulled his drunken antics he would've got away with it.

Either way I expect to see him fighting for another promotion as soon as his no-compete clause is up.

A Huntington Beach woman who was more than 16 weeks pregnant and who police said was injured in a hit-and-run crash with mixed martial artist Quinton “Rampage” Jackson on the 55 Freeway two weeks ago has had a miscarriage, her fiance said Friday.

Prosecutors have yet to file charges against Jackson, a former light heavyweight champion for the Ultimate Fighting Championship who remains free on $25,000 bail. Prosecutors would not comment on any potential charges due to Griggs’ miscarriage.

“Our office will make sure we take as much time as necessary to make a proper filing decision and including all evidence and medical information to make sure any charges that are filed are fair and accurate,” Dist. Atty. spokeswoman Farrah Emami said

It depends on what the injuries were and their severity as to whether they can link them to the cause of the miscarriage.

Regardless, that's a horrible development.

Cain/CAAAEEEN Velasquez vs Antoni Hardonk @ UFC 90 in October. Card so far looks like thus...

Silva/Pee-Coat

Sherk/Griffin

Werdum vs Junior Dos Santos

Alves/Sanchez

Hardonk/CAin

Also heard rumors of Melvin vs Fisher at this show.

So UFC 90 is a mere week after 89, and headlined by Anderson Silva v. Patrick Cote? Affliction is still looking like the better option for October so far.....at least until I see more of what the card is going to be at UFC 90.

Hardonk has KO power, I am interested in this fight

It's going to be hard to use that KO power, when you are taking down in about 0.01 seconds because you have 0 sprawl...
