MMA Comments that Don't Warrant a Thread

Recommended Posts

Causing controversy with DLH means ticket sales, but with the UFC it doesn't mean much. He was saying that because MMA is growing fast in popularity but he, and everyone else, wanted this fight to be the biggest match of the decade and to be a kick in the ass for boxing's popularity. I didn't see the fight, but heard it didn't live up to the hype. If it did crazy numbers than all the MMA talk may have only helped MMA since most people would have been bored by the fight but would have been intrigued by this "UFC stuff". I don't know, much like the Mike Freeman stuff this was a non-story from the beginning, and the fact that the broadcasters brought it up after the fight means that they are insecure about the UFC's drawing power. He apologized now because if he didn't people would expect him to step in, and he would never do that knowing the consequences and also the lack of money involved. Although the nature of this apology combined with things he said before the fight only make him look like a bitch, especially after he said he could whoop that ass, and Dana said he'd get his ass whooped. This is supposed to be the stamp on his career (a win over an aging, shot fighter by the way) and the biggest thing people seem to be talking about is the UFC.

Moreover, who's the mark who's been reading Sherdog threads? Next up we'll see "OMG FEDOR VS CHUCK FOR CHAMPION OF THE UNIVERSE" as the sub-heading.

Speaking of Floyd, the poll on SI.com's main page....

"How did the Mayweather/De La Hoya fight impact your opinion of boxing?"

Used to hate it, now I'm hooked - 3%

Used to hate it, still do- 17%

Used to love it, still do- 37%

Used to love it, now I don't- 8%

Boxing? When's the next UFC fight? - 37%

Also who keeps changing the subtitle? I'm curious. I didn't know you could do that.

I change it as and when the next piece of news comes in, so people know it's been posted. I generally copy and paste the headlines from the articles posted, so if they're in all caps it's because that's how it was in the article and I don't feel like re-typing it.

I didn't see the fight, but heard it didn't live up to the hype.

It didn't. Not even close.

God I want Chuck to lose. To, like, anybody.

I take comfort in the fact that the last time he fought a Natural Athlete who could strike (Vernon White) he got caught quite a few times.

Assuming he beats Tito @ 73, Rashad. If he loses to Tito, Jardine. If Jardine loses to Houston Alexander they're fucked.

Then again, they do have Arona, Sokodjou, Wand, Hendo, Shogun and Rogerio under contract.

Fair enough, I was just wondering about the headlines thing. To be honest it's generally pretty useful, for the reasons you stated.

I hope Chuck wins, as usual. He probably will. He is consistent as anyone.

Everybody he's faced since Vernon White has been a natural athlete that could strike, and yes I'm including Tito. Babalu fought like a dumbass though. Randy Couture is the most NATURAL athlete. C'mon.

I don't know anyone who would be good for Chuck if he beats Rampage. I think he can outsprawl Rashad well enough to beat him. Unless someone drops in weight or one of the PRIDE guys stops over I don't know who the best challenge will be

Well they've hinted at doing a superbowl event with PRIDE and UFC. Maybe he'll face Henderson or Shogun there. Or hell, maybe he'll just move up to Heavyweight and fight someone else.

From what I hear Shogun is staying in PRIDE at the moment. Henderson is out until the end of summer, IIRC . Sokodjou/Shogun has come up as a potential matchup, as well as Soko/Nakamura.

UFC: MAYWEATHER JR. UFC BOUND?

by Phil Lowe

UFC president Dana White has said he plans to make Floyd Mayweather Jr. a multi-million dollar offer to fight his lightweight champion.

White’s comments came after Mayweather’s victory over Oscar De La Hoya, a bout in which he earned $10 million plus a cut of the pay-per-view revenues that could double that figure. White said he was prepared to match Mayweather with UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk following Mayweather’s numerous putdowns of mixed martial arts fighters.

White wouldn’t be pinned down on a specific number, but said, “I promise you, I will make it worth his while. I will make it very worth his while. We can make him a very, very competitive offer if he still feels he can beat one of our guys.”

The UFC President was at last night’s fight at the MGM Grand along with owner Lorenzo Fertitta and Sherk in a bid to make a case for a fight with Mayweather. Mayweather reportedly sent a peace offering to White via UFC vice president Marc Ratner before Saturday’s bout, also telling Ratner to tell White he was only kidding when he was ripping the UFC and its fighters.

Some more on that Freeman clown:

--For those of you who are fans of CBSsportsline columnist Mike Freeman and his mindless columns of the past week, one of his classmates at the University of Delaware told us that he knew him and he was a good guy in college, and was editor-in-chief of the University of Delaware school newspaper. Then he was dumped. It was found out that Freeman was editor of the school paper while not actually being enrolled in school. He dropped out without telling anyone while keeping his position. Freeman had gotten the college some publicity because he was the first African-American ever to be editor of the school paper and his firing may have hit some local mainstream media.

What a bitch. He runs his mouth, and when he gets challenged and called out, he tucks his tail and runs the opposite direction.

Dana won't offer Floyd anything remotely close to what he earned for the Oscar fight. If Chuck, on the biggest PPV of the year (vs Ortiz @ 66) can't even pull in anything past 5 mil Floyd will laugh at whatever Dana puts on the table for him.

There's also the fact that Dana will be pissing off his fighters by offering an untested, unproven MMA fighter that much money for what would likely be a very short fight.

I doubt they'd be upset. The roster would enjoy watching Mayweather get fucked up and tapped out.

Dana would not offer Floyd the 20 million dollars that it would take to get him in there. That's that.

I didn't see the fight, but heard it didn't live up to the hype.

Of course it didn't live up to the hype. What fight that is hyped to that extent could ever possibly live up to the hype.

Anyone that thought the fight was going to be a great fight was delirious. It was the typical Floyd fight, hit with clean punches and not be hit. As I said in another thread, I drew different things from Floyd comments, as some people do when they read comments like that. I interpreted it as Floyd saying that no man in MMA has the striking ability of a championship boxer. I'm not sure about how I feel on that subject, that's just what I drew from it.

IF Floyd got the proper time (about a year) to train for an MMA fight, I am sure that he would give anyone that he fought a great fight. The guy dedicates himself to everything that he does, and this would be no different. However, the fact of the matter is that he doesn't have the time to commit to one fight when he could conceivably go out there and fight one rematch with De La Hoya and make more money than he could with Dana in one fight and a possible fight with another man like Miguel Cotto, without having to go all out for a year and learn a number of new techniques. A man does not go up 20 pounds in weight over his entire career and win every fight without dedication. You guys make it sound like Floyd is some standstill, flat footed boxer, much like an Arturo Gatti. This is most certainly not the case. Floyd has unmatchable hand and footspeed.

I'm not a Floyd fan at all (mainly because he runs his mouth, but he writes checks that he definitely can cash), but if you get a guy with his dedication signing that contract to fight in the UFC, he would bust his fucking ass to do everything he could to win that fight. And I think he would beat Sherk or get very close if he had the proper time to train. Especially if Sherk tried to strike with him, he would get fucking busted.

Floyd was just trying to get attention with those comments (and practically everything he's ever said) and nothing more. He got it too. If you don't know that, you don't know anything about Floyd Mayweather.

Just to note, because I sound like a big time boxing nuthugger, I love both MMA and Boxing. I prefer boxing because of the length of the fight, and I like MMA because there's always the potential for a big knockout. There are things that I do not like about both. With MMA, it's the length (or lack thereof) of the fight. Whenever I order a UFC PPV and I get a quick knockout (that isn't a Gonzaga type kick on CroCop, I feel a little shortchanged. And with boxing, I hate the fucking retarded judges that always make me wish that I hadn't ordered the fight to begin with. So, yeah. Just my .02

Why you gotta be a big time boxing nuthugger? :P

I think we all know that Mayweather wasn't going to do an MMA match because of the money and potential to spoil his boxing pedigree. Like they say, it's two entirely different sports. But I think that they do need to have some sort of boxer-freestyle fighter match with "name" guys just to settle this once and for all.

Yeah, they do. Hopefully involving Anderson Silva so someone gets knocked out with the knee action.

Silva would be a good choice if UFC were ever to put a boxer in the octagon. Maybe the most technically gifted striker in the entire game. Having said that, if Silva got KO'd by a boxer then MMA would be doing some serious backpedalling.

I wouldn't put anyone that wanted to stand there and go toe to toe with a boxer in that hypothetical fight. That's why I chose Silva, his approach is very tactical. He won't go in there and just start throwing wild punches because he knows that there is a smarter way to get the job done.

And if he KO'd the boxer they'd probably contend that they got beat by a glorified kickboxer. I don't know that Silva is the right choice. He's got the BJJ background, sure, but he prefes to throw. A great choice in the styles-make-exciting-fights sense, but not for a definitive boxing/MMA matchup. Sherk is great for the latter, but not the former. He's probably got the Alanis version of "My Humps" (tm Lei Tong) in his mp3 player as we speak.

So my question would be this - who would make an exciting fight AND best exemplify MMA? GSP maybe? Hughes? Nog? Maybe there's a heavyweight out there with the balls to fight Fedor.

There would be alot of money to be made for a mixed fight. Say, Mayweather vs. Sherk, or many different combinations.

Who do you think would win in a bout between Sherk and Mayweather? I'd put my money on Sherk any day.

Clearly Fedor would be the best example of how DOMINANT an MMA fighter would be over a boxer.

Someone like Lidell or Hughes or Couture or Tito would get the best -ratings- in the U.S.. More marketable than Sherk or a foreign fighter.

But the reality is I can't see a boxer really winning, one of the hardest parts for them to adjust to would be the infighting. You see so many kickboxers making transitions to MMA (not always sucessfully perhaps, but htey do) because their skills translate to -mixed- martial arts better. The infighting/clinch is very important. Someone like Chuck, with his excellent sprawl, is still capable of separating fromh is opponent in the clinch and creating space and using that to get big shots in. Boxers use the tie up to rest and drag out a fight, not to create offense.

Sherk/Floyd would go one of three ways.

1. Sherk goes to shoot and Floyd catches him on the chin, knocking him out in the process.

2. Floyd gets out of the way of Sherk's shoot attempts, which is conceivable given the speed that Floyd possesses. This is the most likely, if you ask me. A boring ass fight.

3. Sherk shoots and submits Floyd in a minute.

I would not want to see Chuck get in there with a boxer. If there was one top guy that I would want a boxer to fight (as a boxing fan), it would probably be him. He's a great striker, but the arc of his punches is a thing that championship boxers love to see. As for Fedor, I do not think there is a boxer that has ever walked this planet that could beat him in a Mixed Martial Arts bout. I really don't. Nog would be extremely tough for anyone to beat too. The ground aspect will ruin almost all boxers, but if you get them in there with a guy that loves to strike, they've got a really good shot. That's my point in all this.

I always wonder why people say that Mixed Martial Artists wouldn't make good professional boxers. If you come up through boxing with a strictly boxing pedigree, a guy like Rampage or Chuck would make a title winning boxer. That much is obvious. I also wonder why people ever mention getting mixed martial artists to fight in boxing matches.

It's much harder to contain a fighter than it is to unleash one. If Chuck Liddell went straight into boxing TODAY, he would have a ton of problems. I think guys with the boxing pedigree are able to go into MMA and sometimes do fine because it's a lot easier to teach a guy new things than it is to get him to stop doing old things. With boxers that transition, you're letting them do all the things that they've wanted to do since they've began fighting. Hit a guy when down, forearms, kick, etc. When training a proven Mixed Martial Artist to box, and strictly box, you have to teach them to break all their old habits. That's why MMA guys don't translate as well, in most cases.

Ray Mercer's fighting on an MMA show sometime in June, I believe. Yeah, he's old and washed up, but it will still be interesting to see. He's 46, btw. In all likelihood, he will get his ass fucking beat.

Oh i agree, Chuck would be the last person you'd want to put in with a boxer, as I think he COULD lose the fight.

I only used Chuck as an example of someone with pure striking ability who uses the MMA rules to his advantage...in a way a boxer might not be able to, certainly not without some training.

He's the type of person a boxer would love to fight, though even so I could see him knocking someone out if they didn't take the training effort seriously.

I think Mayweather could be a great lightweight...but boring.
