MMA Comments that Don't Warrant a Thread

Hironaka is now facing Forrest Petz on 4/5. He claims he wants to show off his stand-up, but he'll more than likely submit him quick style.

Bisping is a bigger name because of the England thing and Arlovski and Cro-Cop are as well known, if not more so. No rumours on who's replacing him yet but he should thank whatever God he prays to because Lyoto would've likely brutalized him worse then Jardine.

Do mma sanctioning bodies also think that marijuana is a performance 'enhancing' substance?

Eddie Bravo swears by it, and rarely ever rolls or teaches without it. It's definitely not uncommon in the BJJ community, and I'm sure Lei Tong could throw out a few stories. Of course, this depends on if Diaz smoked before his fight, or a few days/weeks/etc before where it being in his system and him being high are two different things.

Last I checked Eddie doesn't roll or teach stoned at Legends MMA although he does still get high on weekends (he picks up chicks with more ease baked apparently) and goes to the occasional cannabis legalisation rally. The only times he rolls wasted are when he's working on techniques because he claims it helps him relax and look at options rather than overanalyse things and try to get one thing to work when it won't.

I know a few guys out there that aren't averse to Mary Jane although some of them are more obvious ("Mayhem" Miller, BJ Penn, Cabbage, Ryan Gracie) than others ("Buscape" Firminho).

Well I'm taking that from Eddies latest book ("It was so amazing that very rarely do I train without cannabis in my system to this day. Not only do a I train stoned, but also teach all of my classes stoned").

I know those guys are bigger names, but neither are fighting on UFN

So I've decided this doesn't warrant a thread, though I wanted to start one...

Paulo Filho is awesome, right?

Like, his stand up is pretty bad, and he just lunges in for the takedown, but it's not like he thinks himself a striker and puts himself in situations where he can get ko'd and despite not setting up the takedown with anything, his shots are pretty high percentage and when he does grab ahold of someone, his slams and throws are fucking superb. His aggression in getting those takedowns is nearly unmatched at any weight, as well. The biggest plus, of course, is his ground game, which is extraordinary. Not because he is a submission machine, though he probably has the best armbar I've seen in MMA, but because of his positioning abilities. His stocky body mixed with his roid-fueled strength make for a nice combination while on the ground. His base is very strong, which makes it hard to buck and/or sweep, he passes guard well and I haven't seen anyone in the sport get mount like he does.

Not to mention his past two (dominating) wins have come over Misaki and Chonan, which in MMAth terms has him as #1 at MW.

Plus he has a tattoo of Mike Tyson. Plus he wears a flannel vest unironically.

Page 18, right?

Since the move to Legends I'm pretty sure he's clean during class due to the whole safety regulations set up. I know he still gets wrecked afterwards though since the guy who does his mouthguards does mine and they got baked last year together the week after the gym opened to the public. Although since Randy now doesn't drop by Legends since he set up his other gym maybe things have changed.

The biggest knock I have on him is his ground and pound is fucking weak sauce to the extreme. I've seen harder hits in porno movies.

That couldn't possibly be legal.

Meltzer linked to an article from the Boston Herald web site. It's the basic "MMA used to be no holds barred but not anymore" story, complete with a quote from a WWE employee who tows the usual company line when it comes to UFC threatening their PPV revenues.

The UFC had 10 pay-per view events in 2006 that generated more than $200 million in customer retail revenue, according to an executive familiar with the numbers. WWE said it had 16 events that generated about $200 million in revenue. HBO, through its boxing shows, had 11 events, reporting revenue of $177 million.

”They’re a sport, we’re sports entertainment,” said Geof Rochester, WWE’s senior vice president of marketing. ”Do I consider them a threat to boxing and boxing’s pay per view? Absolutely.”

Man, I'd kill to see the UFC in Massachusetts sometime (I believe MMA is legal here). Did they just abandon Mohegan Sun in Connecticut?

Karo Parisyan vs. Shonie Carter is a fucking AWESOME fight. Well. From what I've see of it cause the fucking thing stops before the 3rd round. But the first round is dope, and the second round has some nice shit in it too (especially the guillotine choke sequence). Gotta watch it. JU DO.

Probably should start a thread on the upcoming Fight Night, but for now, if anybody wants to hear tremendous trash talking, listen to Melvin Guillards interview on UFC.com. From saying the only reason that Joe won the season is because he (Melvin) and Burkman eliminated each other in the fight, to telling Joe to stay at home and be a family man, Melvin speaks confidence.

I'm kinda torn on that fight only because they're both pretty good at exposing each others weaknesses. In Melvin's case, it's the ground game and with Joe it's his weak chin. The difference-maker here could be Melvin working on his takedown D in which case I'd be picking him because you can't train a chin to take the kind of shots Melvin will be throwing Joe's way.

Here are some pre-fight videos from PRIDE. If PRIDE is bought by the UFC, I hope these still continue, because nobody does them better.

Fedor Fujita

Cro Cop Fedor*

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut2rgVxhGpI

^^Truly sublime, PRIDE meets Terminator^^

Openweight GP Finals

Fedor Hunt*

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5lERF8ZFpU

^^Just a really goofy video getting across Hunts laissez-faire attitude towards fighting and yet still hypes up the fight (which was recent, which was very good)^^

Gomi Pulver

Kawajiri Kim

Gomi vs. Aurelio Pre 2*

^I love this video. The style of it is just... you don't normally associate it with fighting... great, great, great. Maybe my favourite.

Gomi vs. Ishida Pre

PRIDE 07/06*

^A fancam of a video showing the fans dedication to PRIDE. I love the use of the PRIDE glove on every day people, and the Bridge Over... song is a nice sentimental touch. Poetry.

Stevenson has been better as of late with protecting his chin, and while he's been dropped a numebr of times lately, I have a hard time remembering it happening before he managed to score a takedown. And since the terms "guard," "mount defense," and "submission avoidance" have no meaning to Guillard, I'd make him clear favorite.

Though I have not read it myself, so this is like totally rumoured and shit which is why it's here rather than a thread of it's own...

Brandon Vera apparently posted on Sherdog and said he is getting rid of his old management and leaving City Boxing and is staying with the UFC.

If true, VERY good news.

Hmm, why would he want to leave City Boxing? I don't care about the management, judging from what I've heard he is doing a good thing by ditching them as they almost got him blackballed, but from all accounts City Boxing is a good school and is what pretty much brought him up to where he is today. Not necessarily from the very start, but from when he was an amateur to now.
