So, I was a little off on Eagle Eye.

Posted

The movie is called Fireproof and was released by Samuel Goldwyn.

It's a Christian movie starring Kirk Cameron as a firefighter trying to save his marriage. I posted the trailer a while back in CTDWAT.

Nights in Rodanthe is based off a Nicolas Sparks book. If you've seen or heard of The Notebook, you pretty much know what to expect. Whatever happened with Hamlet 2? I haven't seen an advertisement for it in a couple weeks, and don't remember seeing anything in the Box Office reports. Did it tank that bad?

I slightly disagree with Kamala, given that he was coming off the biggest hit of his career. Like Woody, his movies have a niche audience and sometimes they can reach out, and sometimes they don't.

What killed St. Anna was the negative reviews. Who wants to see a 2 hr 40 movie to begin with, let alone one that is not that good?

Hamlet 2 came and went- it tanked.

Well I'll slightly disagree with Barron, Inside Man was a box office hit in spite of Spike Lee's presence not because of it. They didn't really play up his name at all in the ads let alone promote it as the latest Spike Lee Joint. I agree though that the fact that Miracle at St. Anna wasn't very well reviewed and was incredibly long sure didn't help its chances.

I don't want to be misconstrued as a Spike Lee hater btw. I don't think you'll find very many bigger fans of the guy on this board than me but I've met many people who haven't seen any of his movies solely because of the boneheaded statements he seems to make before the release of every one of his movies.

I'm not a Spike Lee fan at all, but when predicting St. Anna, I was looking at his numbers and his movies have done better than I thought, especially given their openings and screen counts.

I think Lee's pissing match with Eastwood also didn't help.

You make a good point about Inside Man, but I think Lee's presence helped the movie somewhat.

Did you know he directed the pilot of Shark?

Posted

Yeah, he does a surprising amount of director for hire stuff. TV pilots, commercials, and shit. Though I guess he needs to fund stuff like Bamboozled and She Hate Me. I just read the authorized biography on him a couple months back. Good stuff.

Saw CHOKE today, and it was a very good movie. Not as great as FIGHT CLUB was, but they did a good job with it none the less. I will certainly see it again, and I am getting this once it comes out on DVD.

My (incorrect) predictions-

Barron Predicts the Box Office:

1) Eagle Eye- 43.4

2) Nights at Rodanthe 14.6

3) Miracle at St. Anna 9.2

4) Lakeview Terrace 8.4

5) Burn After Reading 6.6

6) Igor 6.0

7) My Best Friend's Girl 4.0

8) Righteous Kill 3.6

9) Tyler Perry 3.3

10) The Women 2.8

Fantasymoguls-

FINAL PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 26

1. NEW – Eagle Eye (Dreamworks/Paramount) – $28M

2. NEW – Nights in Rodanthe (Warner Bros) - $12.9M

3. Lakeview Terrace (Sony) - $6.75M

4. NEW – The Miracle at St. Anna (Disney) - $5.8M

5. Burn After Reading (Focus) - $5.7M

6. Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys (Lionsgate) - $3.8M

7. Righteous Kill (Overture) - $3.7M

8. My Best Friend’s Girl (Lionsgate) - $3.5M

9. Igor (MGM) - $3.1M

10. The Women (Picturehouse) - $3M

For the record, I had Fireproof doing about a $3,000 PTA and around 2 million weekend cume, not enough to make the top 10.

boxofficeguru-

1) Eagle Eye- 30 mil

2) Nights in Rodanthe- 12 mil

3) Lakeview Terrace- 8 mil

4) Burn After Reading- 6.5

5) Miracle in St. Anna- 6 mil

My Best Friend's Girl- 3.5

Almost had Eagle Eye right when I said 30 million, though I didn't bother predicting an entire list or anything. The only shot that a movie like Miracle at St. Anna had was great reviews and thus a strong word of mouth.

Let's also not kid ourselves on something else. The audience for WW2 movies is shrinking to begin with, since Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima did little business (though Letters was really a niche film). But an all black WW2 movie is shrinking the audience even further. It's just a hard sell since the main audience for a WW2 movie skews older and they don't wanna hear about it. The only good black WW2 movie I can think of is A Soldier's Story.

The Lucky Ones joined the sub-$1,000 PSA club this weekend! I'll go into more detail in the sub $1,000 PSA thread but this is another one that I saw!

I saw it a few weeks ago at a Q-n-A with the director, and it was actually really good. I felt bad for the director, since you could tell he knew his movie was going to tank

Growing Pains died when Boner left. The end.

And Full House, wow did that show turn out a mess of kids. Still though, the former meth addict has some nice big ones now so good on her.

I just discovered Saw V and High School Musical 3 are released on the same day. Saw is totally finishing a distant second that weekend now.
