Oh, tournament administrator: knocking out two tremendous Sam Cooke songs on the tiebreak in consecutive rounds is near-embarrassing. Pretentious finger-wagging, commence. GROUP A "Respect" by Aretha Franklin "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye GROUP B "Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. There are probably 8 CCR songs I like better than this one, but "Hey Jude" is actually one of my least favorite Beatles' efforts. "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles. The best song left by a Mama Cass-esque margin. GROUP C "My Generation" by The Who. Fuck Elvis Presley. That song blows. "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys GROUP D "Venus in Furs" by The Velvet Underground. I'll take weird and fucked up over Bob for a more interesting final. GROUP A "Respect" by Aretha Franklin "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye - This one was pretty tough, but this match-up would ensure at least one person with melanin in their skin making it to the Final Four. Affirmative Action ftw. GROUP B "Hey Jude" by The Beatles - I just watched The Royal Tennenbaums a couple days ago and so 'Go, Mordecai' is p. fresh in my mind. Love that uplifting bridge y'all. "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles - At least 'Brown Eyed Girl''s awful run of terror should hopefully come to an end here. I still can't believe it beat "A Change Is Gonna Come." If it somehow wins here I move we burn down the music folder and salt the earth beneath it. GROUP C "My Generation" by The Who - This song sucks but it sucks less than Elvis. "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys - Duh GROUP D "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan - Tough choice. I went with the one that's more fun to sing along to in the car. Hugely disappointing, especially the executive decision to push "Sunshine of Your Love" along once more. Welp, join me if you please in staving off the inevitable Beatles/Dylan showdown. "Respect" by Aretha Franklin AND IT'S NOT EVEN FUCKING CLOSE. Both songs are overplayed, but one of them is actually sonically compelling and not a forerunner to sludgy BUTT-rock and bad hair dye commercials. "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye and this was a very tough call between two great organ features, but I give this the slight edge. "Hey Jude" and "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles both have to win in spite of my Beatles/Dylan grousing above because they're up against two songs I don't really like and it'd be disingenuous for me to vote ahead some dumpy CCR song just because I fear all this time and energy culminating in "hay guyz what was better hey jude or like a rolling stone" so here we are. "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis Presley is a rare Elvis song that I like and it's up against a Who song from before they were good. "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys moves right along "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan is what it is and so on that goes as well "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones is my favorite song in a catalogue for which I'll never really care and so it's all I can do to mitigate my Stones hate. How did "What a Wonderful World" go this far, anyway? It's not that great of a song and whatever WAS good about it has been ruined by poorly placed overexposure. Was this an electorate's desperate grasp at something resembling jazz cred? "Gimme Shelter" is foreboding and evokes dippy music fans getting their skulls kicked in by criminals on motorcycles. "What a Wonderful World" is in, like, health insurance commercials and shit. "Gimme Shelter" is health danger. I'm not happy with most of my picks but I did the best with what was offered, I suppose. You know what the problem with this tournament is? It was voted by the general population of TSM. You know as much as I like to crow about the lack of posters actively participating in the music folder, it's the results of a tournament like this that makes me realize why it's probably better off that it's kind of inclusive for the most part. The new fashions in jazz are not simply born of economic competition. We must see in them without any doubt the consequences of the defeat, slow but sure, of the southern world of the United States.
