Having finally gotten to see Tropic Thunder, Tom Cruise IMO was an extended cameo. He was aboslutely hilarious, and this is coming from someone who's never really liked Cruise. Robert Downey carried the movie for me though. He, Mickey Rourke, and.... I'll say James Franco are my hopefuls for the male side of the movie awards.

No love for the soon to be dearly departed Pushing Daisies? Boo. NPH and Jeremy Piven oughta just share the award.

ETA: Just noticed Ledger was nominated in Supporting as well as Downey. Either one is fine by me.

Look at it this way...William Hurt was nominated for an Oscar for like 10 minutes of screentime in A History of Violence...Anthony Hopkins WON a Best Actor Oscar for what? Like a half hour total of screentime? What's her name from American Gangster was also nominated for a very minimal amount of screentime.

Hopkins actually had something like only 16 minutes of screentime. It feels like longer though because he was so damn awesome and iconic and so much of the rest of the movie was talking about him. The Joker is the same way in TDK actually.

Cruise's part in Tropic Thunder was funny but really? Golden Globe worthy? Oo-kay. Personally, I think Ledger should sweep up that award - his performance was one of the best of the year period, i could see it not winning in "Best Actor" but in "Best Supporting Actor"? Please, hand him the award.

I'm glad Ledger got nominated so as to avoid the bitch-fest that would follow if he didn't but I'll say here what I've been saying ever since TDK came out: There's not a person on this planet that would place his performance so high up if the dude didn't off himself. It was a great role and a great job done on his part but there's no way in hell him dying doesn't add to that for those calling it the best of the year or even worse, best of all time.

Don't worry, according to bob barron, these are a joke and are not legitimate anyway!

They're not. They only nominated Tom Cruise so he would show up. It's typical Golden Globes bullshit

her name from American Gangster was also nominated for a very minimal amount of screentime.

The Ruby Dee nod was also a farce- it was a way of recognising her long career in Hollywood and because Ossie Davis died

Was Lost not eligible for the Golden Globes this year? Season 4 was outstanding, and I was hoping it'd garner a nomination in something at least.

Yeah, good call. I don't think it has anything to do with the strike because Office was affected by that and it still got nominated. Michael Emerson deserves some recognition for his work in S4.

LOST was eligible. Maybe they just didn't send enough gifts?

Good on 'em for the Colin Farrell nomination. The guy was outstanding in "In Bruges." But I really think Aronofsky deserved a nomination for "The Wrestler."

How was Downey best supporting? I am fairly sure he had the most screen time in Tropic Thunder. Also, Gary Oldman got fucked if Tom Cruise got nominated and he didn't. His Gordon is fantastic and is more lost in the role than Cruise was under a ton of prosthetics. He should have danced during the credits, that would have won him it..

Downey, Jr. getting the supporting nod is one of two tjings. 1) they looled at the film as an ensamble and thus couldn't decide who was the lead. Screan time doesn't equal lead. 2) they wanted to give someone else the Best Lead nod over him.

Shit, I thought In Bruges was a Drama.

Speaking of Drama, nothing for him? But it's nice to see Kevin Connolly get a nod.

I hoping to see Californication, Duchovny take the comedy side of the tv shows. I'd also like to see either Gabriel Byrne(In Treatment) or Michael C. Hall(Dexter) and their respective shows get the nod. Best stuff on HBO, Showtime, or any network imo.

Well, even if it's only ok, I will say that the only other show I'm able to sit through on the comedy list is Weeds. I can see how Californication isn't for everyone. I forgot to mention earlier that I'd like to see Mickey Rourke pick up the nod just because I'd like to see this be the start of a full blown comeback for him.

I find it funny that they nominated foreign and indy flicks to such a heavy extent that they only had a grand total of 9 films that both got full nationwide releases and are up for an award here. I don't know exactly why I find that funny, but I do. Even the Oscars aren't this heavily biased against big studio pictures.

In fact, lots of the stuff which has been nominated hasn't even been officially released yet, they've only played at festivals and such. Those are some odd rules there.

Anna Pacquin and her awful "southern" accent in True Blood is worth a nomination, while her infinitely better co-stars get nothing?

From what I've read btw, Bob's right, within the industry the Globes are seen as being on the approximate same level as an MTV Movie Award in terms of legitimate celebration of artistic greatness.

This, plus his performance was outstanding.
