Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted January 1, 2009 I don't think there's really a standout consensus number one guy this year. They'd might as well draft Stafford. He's the best QB in the draft, and drafting him will give the Lions the option either to start him immediately or let him learn under Kitna for the first 4-6 weeks of the regular season. Take the best OT available in a draft rich with them as their other first round pick. Take another big-ass offensive linemen with the first pick of the second round. Protect the QB investment. Calvin Johnson can stretch the field, and the protection will give Kevin Smith a better opportunity to develop. Add pieces to the defense later in the draft, and through FA. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Here's my plan for the Bears offseason: Round 1. Best player available. Round 2. Best player available. Round 3. Best player available. Round 4. Best player available. Round 5. Best player available. Round 6. Best player available. I am a god damn genius.
HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Harley, the Lions already have 2 first-rounders, so there's no need to trade up. Also, I've never seen Boone projected as much more than a mid-2nd guy, so that might be a reach there. Ciron Black from LSU would be a better choice if he's still available. Ah, right. As for the reach comment, all it takes is one team to fall in love with a player (Tennessee with Chris Johnson comes to mind) and "reach" to turn the expected on its head. Detroit has the #1 and #23 though Black's a Jr. and I'll wait to see if he comes out. Everything I've read about Boone has me liking him more and more and think he could be a great fit for a Detroit team that needs his kind of style. I've also seen him projected anywhere from Late 1st to 3rd Round. "He likes to get downfield in the run game and run over people in the secondary. Boone also happens to be a very, very intelligent offensive lineman, which helps him while pass blocking. He is always careful to slide past protection to pick up blitzing linebackers or defensive backs. He uses excellent leverage and technique while blocking, and possess fantastic speed for such a huge lineman." - FFToolbox "He's a right tackle and he might have to be moved to guard, but he's a nasty type of player. He's not real flashy and he dropped a little bit, but in the end he's going to be a heck of a football player in the NFL. He's played with good technique and he's so durable and nasty and offensive line coaches will fight for him but scouting directors who love upside will want to pass on him. He'll slip enough to be underrated." - NFLDraftBible IMO, Detroit could get a steal if they select him in the 2nd (or get lucky if he falls to the 3rd) where they can move him to RT or inside to RG. He sounds like one of those O-Linemen who fall due to a lack of real upside but are just good, solid football players overall.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Patriots are franchising Matt Cassel. Nice payday for a backup QB, y'know? I really want Chicago to get Michael Johnson. Guy has Mario Williams size, and had fifteen TFL this season at Ga. Tech, and 7 sacks? Oh yeah. ILB would be great, too. Half of the reason that same freakin' inside slant pattern was wide open all year against the Bears D was because Urlacher is running on his heels, beat up, and too old to keep up as a cover two Mike. They need someone faster at that position. Move Urlacher outside opposite Briggs.
MFer 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Hey, I'm all for fixing the O-line, but Detroit needs as many defensive players as possible. Let's take a look... DT: Detroit's run D is awful. They traded away Shaun Rogers because of his supposed bad attitude and lack of effort. Problem is that they foolishly thought that filling his spot with undersized guys (Chuck "War Daddy" Darby for one) who played hard would work. Cory Redding is half player he was a couple years ago without Rogers being there to take on those double teams. DE: Cliff Avril and Dewayne White are good, but the Lions could use a more dominant pass rusher. MLB: Detroit has the worst LB unit in the league (even with Ernie Sims, who regressed this season), and it starts at MLB. Having Paris Lenon as the starter there is just shameful. OLB: Sims is one of the best players Detroit has, but he had a subpar year in '08, constantly overrunning plays and missing tackles. Ryan Nece and Alex Lewis both suck. CB: Leigh Bodden (the guy they traded Rogers for) was a bust for the most part this year. Maybe he'll play better in a defense that plays more man-to-man, but he may not get that chance because Detroit might not pay him that $8.6 mil option for '09. Brian Kelly looked great in the preseason, but when the real games began, he was toast. He started like 10 games and then got cut. The Lions will probably need two new starting corners for '09. S: Dwight Smith was yet another FA that failed spectacularly this season. Daniel Bullocks and Gerald Alexander are young players with promise, but they're inconsistent (plus Alexander was on IR most of the season). Bottom line is that the Lions are dead last in scoring defense, total defense, rush defense, and are 27th in pass defense (Opposing QB's had a total passer rating of 110.9). Detroit's defense gave up 517 points this season, which is the 2nd-worst total in NFL history. If the Lions can get a good FA QB to come in, I'd like to see them draft the best left tackle first, and then go defense with the rest of picks (with MLB, DT, and CB being the primary focuses). They can pick up a decent guard in free agency or maybe draft one late. The Lions also need a TE, a #2 WR, and a return man worth a damn, but there's just way too many holes to fill in one offseason. naiwf 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 Peyton won his 3rd MVP easily with 32 votes. Pennington & Michael Turner got 4 each, James Harrison & Adrian Peterson 3 each, Philip Rivers had 2, and Chris Johnson & Kurt Warner got a vote each as well. It didn't matter or anything, but the voter who gave Chris Johnson an MVP vote should have his or her priveleges revoked.
MFer 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 Can't argue with Peyton winning it, but it's kind of a letdown in some ways. Throughout the season, you could've made the case for Brees, Warner, Eli, Ryan, Turner, Peterson, Pennington, etc...even defensive players like Harrison and Haynesworth were in the mix. Instead, it ends up being same old boring Peyton Manning.
Psycho Penguin 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 I had a feeling it was going to be him, and he does deserve it, but I would have given it to Pennington or Turner.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted January 2, 2009 I was slightly disappointed because now Favre can't boast the claim that he's the NFL's only 3 time MVP.. plus it's not like Peyton deserved it all that much 2 out of the 3 times he won it. You could probably make the same case for Favre too though, I guess (particularly in 97 when Sanders ran for 2000).
CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 Winning Comeback Player of the Year twice is kind of funny. Pennington might be the best player never named to a Pro Bowl. London "Susan Lucci" Fletcher says hello. This happened to Steve Stricker on the PGA Tour as well. It freakin' happened in consecutive years, no less - 2006 and 2007. How ridonk is that? CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2009 Some interesting names being thrown around for the Broncos job...Spagnuolo from the Giants, McDaniels from the Pats, and Bob Stoops from Oklahoma. Dunno if I'd like to see a college coach, given how recent hires around the league have done. Stoops does seem a lot more honest and forthright than guys like Saban and Petrino, though. One other name mentioned that I don't want to see anywhere near Denver is Jason Garrett.
HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2009 Glad to see the NFL players can continue appearing on the police blotter! http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=502737 Buffalo Bills S Ko Simpson was arrested outside a bar in South Carolina after he refused to leave officers alone as they arrested another man, according to a police report. Simpson was in a car that was speeding through the parking lot of the Celebrations bar around 2 a.m. New Year's Day. The driver and another passenger in the car were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after they yelled and cursed at police, according to the report. Simpson than began yelling at officers, saying "I'm Ko Simpson with the Buffalo Bills. I am worth millions!" several times. The officers asked Simpson to leave the parking lot and he began to walk away, but turned around and started yelling at officers again, police said.

Guest Report post Posted January 5, 2009 Apparently the Raiders are trying to sell more shares in the franchise. The kicker...the guy trying to buy them has also tried to buy the Jaguars, intending to move the Jaguars to Los Angeles. The broker of said deal is trying to add an option for the prospective minority owner to assume majority ownership within the next few years. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3809431 Interesting news. Matt Young 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 I saw all the games on a DVR delay since I was at Staples center on Saturday night and had people over Sunday. Two games ended how I wanted them to; two ended the way I did not. Fortunately, all were competitive and the ones that mattered had the teams I wanted to win, winning. I'm just glad the Vikings are out, and even though the result was spoiled for me, I enjoyed watching the Chargers win.

HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 Jeez... http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?i...ce=NFLHeadlines "Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski has been told he will be fired if he interviews for the head coaching vacancy with the New York Jets, according to sources. The interview is scheduled for Monday. Despite the threat from athletic director Gene DeFilippo, Jagodzinski plans to do the interview with the Jets, the sources said. Those sources said that in the event Jagodzinski is fired, BC would promote offensive coordinator Steve Logan to head coach." Sounds like the athletic director is a moron. What if JJ doesn't get the job? So you fire him and essentially let him leave to go to another college instead of having him for another season or two? http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2009/0...up-the-gut.html Here's the top teams by run side... ranked by YPC, no idea on the actual totals though. Left End: St. Louis Rams (!?!?!) Left Tackle: New York Giants Left Guard: New York Giants Center: New York Giants Right Guard: Dallas Cowboys Right Tackle: Carolina Panthers Right End: Baltimore Ravens Really surprised at St. Louis ranking well with the left end spot and it's no surprise that the Giants could run left at will. Although I'll be sure to watch any running plays off right tackle now in the Carolina game next week.
MFer 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 Actually, the Rams are last on running to the left end...the Chiefs are 1st (which is still kinda puzzling). Also, James Harrison won AP DPOY, receiving 22 of 50 votes. DeMarcus Ware finished 2nd with 13 votes. Not sure who was 3rd, 4th, and so on, but I would imagine that Ed Reed got his fair share of votes as well (Polamalu and/or Porter probably got a couple too).
