BifEverchad Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 To kickstart the thread after a head-scratching weekend: What's the most important story so far this year? Chicago's return to prominence? The return to the top of the East for the Broons? The Ovechkin-Malkin rivalry? Burke as the new Leafs GM? The Avery saga? The Sundin flip-floppery? The downfall of the Senators? The Lecavalier talks? The troubles of the Coyotes? Nice choices, I'll rank 'em! 10) The troubles of the Coyotes 09) Sharks make waves in West 08) The downfall of the Senators 07) Burke as the new Leafs GM 06) Chicago's return to prominence 05) The Vincent Lecavalier talks 04) Ovechkin-Malkin "rivalry" 03) Mats Sundin flip-floppery 02) The Sean Avery saga 01) Top of the East for the Boston Bruins
Red Baron Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Okay, so where does Claude Lemiuex step in. Top 10: 10.) The downfall of Ottawa 9.) Ovechkin vs Malkin 8.) Trouble in Phoenix 7.) Burke taking over Toronto 6.) Chicago becoming a hockey town 5.) San Jose being unstoppable. 4.) Mats Sundin 3.) Sean Avery 2.) Boston being the best. 1.) Tampa Bay.
bob_barron Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Oh man, Caps v. Isles today was awesome. Such a great game to attend live. And Hilary Duff was there! Alexander Ovechkin, Jesus Christ.
BifEverchad Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Years ago I would have chuckled at the Hilary Duff line, but damn...me likey now. God love her too, she still continues to support her man and his shitty, shitty team.
bob_barron Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Islander games are so hilariously depressing. It's like watching a funeral at times. I sat next to a long suffering Islanders fan, and we were laughing at some of the stuff they did out there.
Annabelle Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 can't help but love the bruins eastern dominance. never been a huge fan, but its always nice to see a franchise so rich in tradition dominate. not a fan of the sharks, either, but their dominance has made the western conference as interesting as it has been in years. the possibly western conference championships, if the two best teams play, (detroit/san jose) will be unbelievable. but no one can discount calgary or even chicago, even though they may be a year or two away.
CanadianChris Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 I can't wait to see who San Jose chokes against this year. If they make the WCF I'll be surprised.
CanadianGuitarist Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 I can't wait to see who San Jose chokes against this year. If they make the WCF I'll be surprised. Have you reverted to the mindset now of "Every Sens loss is a Sens win"? Most Leaf fans I know have, but my buddy who's a Senators fan has sent me a text message every day since Thursday saying "Cinderella story, the Sens make the playoffs".
CanadianChris Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Not really, getting rid of Murray and Hartsburg won't help matters much. Not to mention that tanking won't help a lot since there isn't a blue-chipper in the draft this year.
the max Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 I thought there were two blue-chippers. Tavares and Hedman.
CanadianGuitarist Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 I didn't see much of Hedman during the WJC, but he seems like the, or at least one of many, answers for the Sens.
Zetterberg is God Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Pretty crappy game going into the break. Wings really need to work on their defense in the second half otherwise it's early tee times for sure.
bob_barron Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 I hate the thought of tanking a season. I want the Leafs to win every game, screw playing for a high pick. One of my friends at the Islanders game chanted John Tavares.
bob_barron Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Well we're getting closer to a win. That's something. I guess?
Matt Young Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Good game last night for the Kings, beating the Wild again. Colorado tonight won't be so easy.
Guest Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Colorado game is a guaranteed loss. This team is incapable of winning a road back-to-back.
bob_barron Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 I continue to hate shootouts and Vesa Toskala. Great game though
the max Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Fun game. Good to not see Axelsson in the shootout. And I hope Blake Wheeler learns a new move.
Guest Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Good jinx on my part. I've been picking games terribly for the last little while. Thought it was worth a try.
AntiLeaf33 Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 PREDATORS MAY BUY OWN TICKETS TO ENSURE NHL FUNDS This is always a sign of a stable franchise.....
CanadianGuitarist Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 And it's official - Gerber is the odd man out in the nation's capital.
bob_barron Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 For a minute I was like: Gerber plays for the Caps now? I think it's time to move Nashville and Phoenix to Hamilton and Kansas City, or just accept that it was a mistake
AntiLeaf33 Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 I wonder how long until my loaded boss, Jim Balsillie, tries to by one of these failing teams....again
Nightwing Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Replace Kansas City with Winnipeg or maybe Hartford, and I'll agree. In all honesty, I can't see Kansas City being anything more than "Nashville West".
bob_barron Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Hartford still has the old arena, and I don't think Winnipeg can sustain an NHL franchise.
Guest Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 I think Nashville should be contracted. Phoenix too. I also think that if any team had to buy up tickets to ensure that they got a 3 million dollar payment, they would. Any team. In any league.
bob_barron Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 I think Nashville should be contracted. Phoenix too. I also think that if any team had to buy up tickets to ensure that they got a 3 million dollar payment, they would. Any team. In any league. Contraction is such a dirty word, that I think people are afraid to do it.
CanadianChris Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 And it's official - Gerber is the odd man out in the nation's capital. Just a matter of time until he gets traded. I hope. I don't think any team would want him now.
bob_barron Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 The Leafs starting goaltender is Vesa Toskala. He'd be an upgrade. Or is he that bad?
