Bored 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2009 Posting the offseason thread for college football now so I don't forget until May like I did last year. Here's a list of non-traditional, non-conference games between I-A schools for next season (games between 2008 bowl teams are bolded), although I probably missed a few. Here's a link for a list of schools who still have open spots on their 2009 schedule. Hogan Made Wrestling 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2009 There are some interesting games on that schedule. I would say the top 5 of interest (for me at least) are (no particular order): Virginia Tech vs. Alabama USC at Ohio State Utah at Oregon Oklahoma vs. BYU Georgia at Oklahoma State Oregon certainly put together a tough OOC schedule for next season (Utah, Boise State, Purdue). I'll be impressed if we can get through that undefeated.
Urban Warfare 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2009 Apparently Tebow announced at the National Championship celebration that he is coming back for his Senior year (Hasn't been confirmed by a reliable source yet) Percy Harvin also said he was leaning towards coming back. Edit: Official: Tebow returning for Senior Year
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2009 Harvin coming back would be really surprising, given that his speed alone probably makes him a first-rounder.
BradyQuinnManCrush 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2009 Tebow might as well come back, he'll be nothing more than a 4th round pick to play fullback or tight end.
Psycho Penguin 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2009 Virginia Tech ain't fucking around with their OOC next year. I bet the 4th game is Furman or something, but Alabama in ATL, vs Nebraska, at ECU. The ACC will deserve their BCS bid if VT wins 9 or 10 games and is conference champ next year.
HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2009 Wow... a little surprised at this. Massachusetts head football coach Don Brown resigned his post with the school Friday to take the defensive coordinator's position with the University of Maryland. Brown led the Minutemen to their best stretch in the program's history during his five-year tenure as coach, accumulating a 43-19 record and a pair of FCS playoff appearances, including a trip to the NCAA title game in 2006. My early spotlight games... A lot of intriguing "mid major" games against very solid competition next year. A lot of mid majors could get some points in the polls if they can beat their opposition. Auburn vs. Ball State Utah vs. Oregon TCU vs. Virginia BYU vs. Oklahoma BYU vs. Florida State Air Force vs. Minnesota Boise State vs. Oregon Fresno State vs. Wisconsin Fresno State vs. Cincinnati Central Michigan vs. Arizona Western Michigan vs. Michigan Houston vs. Texas Tech Houston vs. Oklahoma State Buffalo vs. Pittsburgh
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 OU RS Sophomore DT Gerald McCoy, Junior TE Jermaine Gresham, RS Sophomore QB Sam Bradford, Junior OT Trent Williams, Junior RB Chris Brown and RS Sophomore RB DeMarco Murray all announced they were returning for next season. Hogan Made Wrestling 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 OU RS Sophomore DT Gerald McCoy, Junior TE Jermaine Gresham, RS Sophomore QB Sam Bradford, Junior OT Trent Williams, Junior RB Chris Brown and RS Sophomore RB DeMarco Murray all announced they were returning for next season. Florida, Oklahoma, and Texas look like the favorites again next year, especially since it sounds like Mark Sanchez will declare for the NFL draft (which would be a smart move on his part, since he will probably the 2nd QB picked after Stafford goes, and next year will be absolutely loaded with Bradford and McCoy). Damaramu 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 Yeah, I just have a feeling we're going to end up with the exact same situation as this season with OU/Texas vs. Florida in the BCS national title game. The only difference is that Texas Tech won't be there to create a 3-way tie (they are losing a lot) so we'll probably go back to the Big XII's traditional "Winner of the Red River Shootout wins the conference" way of doing things. Psycho Penguin 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 Penn State has a chance to go undefeated but the computers will hate them.
Urban Warfare 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 Looks like Harvin is going to the NFL, but Spikes will be returning. Obviously, losing Harvin hurts but I feel there are more than enough playmakers to step up in Harvin's absence. Spikes' return is huge, he was most definitely the leader of the defense and having him back is huge.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2009 Doesn't having him back mean all 11 starters are coming back?
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 Yes it does, along with the rest of the defensive two-deep. Ouch.
JaMarcus Russell's #1 Caucasian Fan 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 My thoughts on Mark Sanchez: Mark Sanchez declared for the NFL draft yesterday, and watching a pissed Pete Carroll was surreal . Personally as an SC fan, I was disappointed to see him leave early, but it makes sense since Colt, Tebow and Bradford are staying. Honestly, I was never a big Sanchez fan (penchant for choking in the big games see Oregon 2007, and Oregon State 2008) but I thought he could benefit another year starting. I don't really think he'll be very good in the pros, as he doesn't read defenses too well and he is too skittish in the pocket. I'm really excited to see what Mitch Mustain, Matt Barkley and Aaron Corp do this spring with most of this offense coming back. I'm also very surprised and excited Taylor Mays and Josh Pinkard are returning.
ANKLELOCK 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 The city of Knoxville is really buzzing right now at the staff Lane Kiffin is putting together. It's still not completed at this point but it already has to be the best recruiting staff in the country. The most recent two coaches to add to the list are former Alabama Recruiting Coordinator and reigning Rivals.com Recruiter of the Year Lance Thompson, who will coach linebackers at Tennessee, and Eddie Gran, Auburn's best recruiter and one of the best RB coaches in the nation. In addition to former South Carolina Recruiting Coordinator David Reaves, former Purdue OC Jim Chaney, Oakland Raiders OLine Coach James Cregg, and, of course Lane, Monte Kiffin, and former USC RecCoordinator Ed Orgeron, this staff is a monster. And Florida Recruiting Coordinator Gonzalez is a possibility to be WR coach, according to the rumor mill. Several Alabama commits are looking hard at UT now, in addition to just about every major recruit who wasn't even thinking about the Vols when Fulmer was fired. We have guys lined up for visits who don't even have Tennessee on their Rivals or Scout lists because their interest is such a recent developement. Basically, according to one of the Scout.com recruiting analysts, "Tennessee is EVERYWHERE right now". So, long story short, UT should finish with a top ten or fifteen at worst class the offseason of a major coaching change which is unheard of, and their gonna get coached up great once they get here. Exciting times in the SEC.

Damaramu 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 Would you look at that. ESPN's magic formula decided OU was the best college football program since 36. Really can't argue with it too much when you start adding up the accomplishments since then.
Broward83 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 ...yes but they're clearly not the best team of all time..that'd be those Trojans of SoCal */sarcasm*
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 ...yes but they're clearly not the best team of all time..that'd be those Trojans of SoCal */sarcasm* Yeah, I think the rankings were more for who has been the most consistent and "best" team throughout the decades. And if you really think about it, aside from the 90's OU has been there every decade since WWII. Hell the article even says they have the best winning percentage of anyone in the country. I like what one guy said on those comments. "OU may have lost to Florida, but if we had to trade our trophy case with Florida's we'd start jumping out windows." Bored 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 I normally don't give a shit about Signing Day and recruiting rankings but this year STANFORD~ had by far their best recruiting class since Tyrone Willingham left. So here's Rivals.com's Top 25 Recruiting Classes after Signing Day. 1. Alabama 2. LSU 3. USC 4. Ohio State 5. Texas 6. Florida State 7. Michigan 8. North Carolina 9. Georgia 10. Florida 11. Miami 12. South Carolina 13. Oklahoma 14. Arkansas 15. Michigan State 16. UCLA 17. Mississippi 18. Auburn 19. STANFORD~ 20. Notre Dame 21. Texas A&M 22. Mississippi State 23. Tennessee 24. Virginia Tech 25. Penn State Highest ranked non-BCS conference school was Utah at #44. Lowest ranked BCS conference school was Syracuse at #116. Ouch.
MFer 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Pretty good showing by Michigan, considering how they finished last year. They did miss out on a couple DT's, but still great overall. Michigan's QB situation should improve by leaps and bounds this upcoming season.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 OU didn't recruit any 5-star players but it was still a good class. They got a ton of 4-stars, and really filled some needs on the defense. They got about a billion DB's to fill the holes left by Nic Harris and Lendy Holmes. But, star ratings really don't mean shit. Rhett Bomar was a 5-star recruit. Sam Bradford was a 3-star recruit. Who was better? Quentin Chaney was a 5-star recruit. Juaquin Iglesias was a 3-star recruit. Look at their career totals and totals last season. Who was better? Hmmm...... So I don't put a ton of stock into the star ratings. It's usually who's recruiting you. You could be a 3-star recruit, but if Florida, OU and USC star recruiting you you're suddenly 5-stars. CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Highest ranked non-BCS conference school was Utah at #44. Lowest ranked BCS conference school was Syracuse at #116. Ouch. It's going to take a minor miracle to resuscitate Orange football at this point. They make a good argument for being the worst program among all the BCS schools right now. Granted I suppose UW has a better chance at actually improving (draft class rank tied for 68!) but at least Syracuse hasn't had the honor of being a BCS school with a winless season, in fact a BCS school with a BCS bowl victory with a winless season. Urban Warfare 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin accused Florida coach Urban Meyer of violating recruiting rules in pursuing wide receiver prospect Nu'Keese Richardson. "I'm gonna turn Florida in right here in front of you," Kiffin said, according to WVLT-TV. "While Nu'Keese was on campus, his phone kept ringing. One of the coaches says, 'who's that?' And he said, Urban Meyer." Kiffin told the crowd, "I love the fact that Urban had to cheat and still didn't get him." Tennessee spokeswoman Tiffany Carpenter told The Associated Press the school would not file an official complaint to the NCAA. In a statement released Thursday, Florida denied it broke any recruiting rules and demanded an apology from Kiffin. “ His allegations are inappropriate, out of line and, most importantly, totally false. ” -- Florida statement "There was no rule violation and we have confirmed this with Southeastern Conference. It is obvious that Coach Kiffin doesn't know that there is not a rule precluding phone contact with a prospect during an official visit on another campus during a contact period. I guess Kiffin wants to set up yet another 30+ point loss at the Swamp this year. I'll wait for all the Vol fans on here to talk shit until Florida beats them by 30 again and they disappear for the rest of the season.

Maztinho 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 No celebrating! EVER! Making it a live infraction call would be the STUPIDEST thing they could possibly do. You are the underdog and you score the go-ahead touchdown with under a minute left, massive party breaks out. Oh wait, you get penalized your touchdown comes off the board. They should in no way give a celebration penalty the ability to take points off the board. Now I could see them enforcing repeat offenders with sitting them down a game for multiple offenses or something of that sort, but you can't take points off the board.
