bob_barron 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 I figure with the success of the top 10 movies thread, I would start a thread where we could discuss who we think will be nominated for Oscars this year, and who we think will be nominated. So, have at it!
BifEverchad 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 The Dark Knight will be nominated for Best Picture. Yeah....
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 The Dark Knight will be nominated for Best Picture. Yeah.... I don't know, it sounds 50/50 at this point. EW says the 4 "locks" are Nixon, Button, Milk and Slumdog with TDK and Doubt gunning for the 5th slot. With declining ratings and interest, the Academy would be retarded to not give TDK its due. I know it would really make me look down on the Academy if they just dismiss it because it's a popcorn movie.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 I feel like Dark Knight is going to get that last spot too. I read an article somewhere while TDK was still out that basically said that the magic number was 500 million...and if TDK made that it would become too difficult to ignore given the high praise it recieved. Its funny that the main thing standing in its way IMO is less that it's a comic book blockbuster...and more that it was released in July when every other movie there was released in the awards months. But the fact is...if you ask people...many many many of them will say that TDK was the best movie of the year. And while there's no chance of it actually winning the award...I think NOT even nominating it will turn people off of the Oscars a little.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 Milk was boring. Somehow the academy likes boring movies and nominate them.
Epic Reine 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 Best actor would be similar to the golden globe nominations with Rourke, Penn, Langella, Pitt and either DiCaprio and Eastwood fighting for the 5th spot. Either Penn or Rourke will win, it could go back and forth.
4hartthreat 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 The five pics that will be nominated are locked at this point. It is Button, Frost, Slumdog, Milk, and Dark Knight. The best way to tell what will be nominated is to look at the various guild nominations. Usually there is some differences in there that leave some question for one or two spots, but this year that is not the case. Every guild has nominated those five films. So there is no doubt that those five will be your nominees.

CBright7831 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 Heath Ledger, RDJ, and PSH will be nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. I somehow get the feeling that Ledger may lose the award, but I hope I am wrong.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 Milk was boring. Somehow the academy likes boring movies and nominate them. Given that you're the only one who didn't like Milk, that's pretty incorrect. I thought Milk was fantastic, with great performances by Penn and Brolin. Aside from the Penn-Luna relationship, not much to nitpick about. I somehow get the feeling that Ledger may lose the award, but I hope I am wrong. The Supporting categories are where they like to fuck around, so it wouldn't shock me.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 I actually thought Penn was fairly disappointing in Milk. In some parts he was pretty solid but there were times when he was flat out not very good, particularly in the scene where his boyfriend hanged himself. Brolin and Hirsch (sp?) were way better in that movie than Penn.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 Milk wins Best Picture, bet that shit. Hollywood be sendin' a message about the gays getting hitched.

Lt. Al Giardello 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 I somehow get the feeling that Ledger may lose the award, but I hope I am wrong. The Supporting categories are where they like to fuck around, so it wouldn't shock me. I like Michael Caine, but him winning in 1999 was bullshit. The other 4 candidates were more deserving, especially Tom Cruise and Michael Clarke Duncan.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 Ledger winning won't surprise me but I just hope he doesn't to see the internet have a collective aneurysm.

Lt. Al Giardello 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 I hope that is sarcasm... Also I know it's unlikely, but I really hope Colin Farrell gets nominated for In Bruges. Even though it's unlikely he'll win, he was still awesome. Problay his best performance ever.
bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 I'm rooting for Mickey Rourke in "The Wrestler" for Best Actor. That was one of those "i can't imagine anyone else playing this guy" performances after you saw it. Deserved the GG but deserves the Oscar more.

Craig Th 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 I have yet to finish Button and I haven't started Revolutionary Road yet, so I can't say who I think should/will be nominated. Unless the 2nd half of Button is amazing and RR left me amazed like American Beauty, then Slumdog should win. Hands down. Gran Torino should get some support as well. I liked it a lot more than Frost/Nixon.

bob_barron 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 Really good list, Ravenbomb. I have to ask though: Why the hype around Viola Davis? She's barely in the movie, and I don't remember anything standing out to me. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 She was only in one scene, yes, but I think it was the best scene in the movie in terms of the writing and acting. I could get behind her character more than the others. Yeah, that credit should probably go to the writing, but I thought she made the most of the screentime she had and can't think of anybody who I would nominate over her. Yeah, that credit should probably go to the writing, but I thought she made the most of the screentime she had and can't think of anybody who I would nominate over her. I kept hearing hype about her and then when the movie ended, I just kept thinking: Wait....she's in two scenes! I was having trouble thinking of deserving women as well, I loved Amber Tamblyn in the Sisterhood sequel and Olivia Thirlby in The Wackness, but I don't know if I'd put it on a nomination list. I also considered Julianne Moore for Blindness, but I figured that'd be lead actress.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 Blindness was the worst movie I saw last year. The only person I'd even consider nominating in that movie is the guy who played the villain. Speaking of which, I briefly considered the youngest version of Jamal's brother in Slumdog for supporting actor, but went with Wright instead.
