WWE SmackDown - January 16, 2009

Recommended Posts

From Rajah

Dark Match:

* Kung Fu Naki b. Ryan Braddock

- Typical slow dark match. Fu Naki gets the win a kick.

SmackDown: (Airing This Friday)

* SmackDown opens with Triple H & Vickie Guerrero.

* Matt Hardy & Finlay b. Jack Swagger & Mark Henry

- Hardy got the win via pinfall on Jack Swagger after hitting Twist of Fate.

* R-Truth b. The Brian Kendrick

- R-Truth gets a big pop. After the match Ezekiel Jackson attacks Truth.

* MVP b. The Big Show

- MVP got the win after Triple H hit Big Show with a sledgehammer.

* Michelle McCool b. Victoria

- After the match Victoria announces her retirement from WWE.

* The Cutting Edge is up next. Edge invites out Jeff Hardy. As he enters his pyro blows up in his face and he is stretchered out (obviously a work). This ends this week’s edition of SmackDown.

I wonder what kind of contract incentives MVP will receive for his losing streak finally ending?

It's just building to a rematch. If Swagger pinned Hardy, it would not make Hardy look credible.

Detailed spoilers from F4W:

Opening credits tease a Cutting Edge segment. Vickie is in the ring getting her usual huge heat. Shows footage of Hunter's handicap match. She runs down Trips as crowd chants YOU SUCK. Claims she got the last laugh. Cue Hunter's music. He's in a leather jacket and pants and has some sort of envelope or document under his arm. Hunter apologizes to Vickie and says he's a degenerate and a goof. Says he got her a gift... her nude photos. He had to get them from Khali. Actually he says Khali had them showed them to everyone first then sold them to Joey Styles and Hunter had to offer Styles big money to get them. Apologizes if Joey left any "sticky." She says that's nice but he's not getting out of his match with Big Show tonight. He says he did one more nice thing for her and cues the Titantron to show the "nudes" (with the usual black boxes). Vickie is so mad that she rules that MVP must now face Big Show in Hunter's place with Hunter's Royal Rumble shot on the line furthermore Hunter is banned from ringside.

Henry & Swagger v. Finlay & Matt Hardy. The heels come out first and Swagger gets a video package putting him over as the next big thing and new ECW champion (keep in mind this actually took place at the Omaha tapings before Sci-Fi had even aired on ECW last night, so a lot of Matt Hardy fans were confused). Finlay played face-in-peril most of the match. Swagger cuts Finlay off over and over again until Swagger misses a top rope splash and Hardy gets in. Distraction by Hownswaggle weapon shot by Finlay on Mark Henry to block then a Twist of Fate on Swagger for 3. Hardy & Finlay celebrate with Hornswoggle. Finlay mocks Swagger and points at his arm to indicate he's on borrowed time, while Hardy points at the ECW title.

Edge, Chavo, Vickie & Big Show backstage. Show says he'll take care of business tonight AND at the Rumble, and smiles at Edge, and says that means he'll win the Rumble and go on to KO Edge at WrestleMania for the world title. Chavo laughs at Edge. Edge snarls and says make yourself useful and go get coffee or something to that effect. Next Zeke and Kendrick try to intimidate R-Truth backstage and do a poor job of it. This is followed by an interview segment between Grisham and McCool. McCool says she's not mean, everybody else is just jealous of her and if she could she'd be jealous of herself too. Horrible acting here - it's hard to decide if her wrestling is worse or vice versa. Victoria gets in her face at the end and promises her pain. From there we go to Hunter giving MVP a pep talk. MVP says don't worry about the match because Big Show is so slow he takes two hours to watch 60 Minutes.

R-Truth vs. Bryan Kendrick. Truth enters through the crowd, rapping the whole way. The WHASSUP is over in Omaha. Truth wins a decent match with the scissors kick and gets a beatdown from Ezekiel seconds afterwards. Kendrick and Zeke leave him laying and Kendrick limps to the back with a smug look on his face.

We get another Hunter & MVP segment backstage where he more or less implies that if MVP doesn't do as he's told and get the job done he'll face the wrath of Triple H and his big trusty sledge.

Big Show v. MVP in a Last Man Standing match. MVP tries to get the jump on Show when he comes out with a steel chair. Match goes all over the place. Occasional pops for MVP, then really long awkward periods of near silence the rest of the time - in other words not much heat. At one point Show unzips the jumpsuit to give MVP a chop and contrary to what you've heard MVP isn't in bad shape. Show finally gets MVP backed all the way up to the top of the ramp and prepares to chokeslam him off when Triple H comes out to make the save and clip Show in the knee with his sledgehammer. Show is unable to answer the ten count and MVP gets a rare win, and he saves Hunter's spot in the Rumble in the process.

A teaser video hypes Umaga's return. Back in Vickie's office she tells Chavo to bring her Triple H IMMEDIATELY.

Michelle McCool v. Victoria. Really sad in retrospect because it was pin drop quiet in the Qwest for almost this entire match. A few people popped for Victoria when she came out, but nobody cared enough about McCool to even hate her. Eventually McCool hits a really ugly modified Styles Clash for the pin and a wave of apathy washed over the arena.

Backstage Hunter reminds the GM he followed her exact words - he was "banned from ringside" and didn't go anywhere near it - he only came out to the stage. She says that's all well and good but you're still going to have to pay when you face Kozlov. Teaser for a "big" Hall of Fame announcement on the Titantron.

Victoria sold for a little bit then got up and announced this match tonight was her last match in WWE, which got her more of a reaction than anything she did working with McCool. She thanked the fans, said what an honor it was to wrestle for us, and told us how much she loved doing it all. As she limped to the back she got applause and a "thank you" chant.

They roll a promo video hyping Austin's induction. If this was the "big announcement" we already knew. Perhaps they'll edit something else in.

Cutting Edge segment. Edge says he's tired of being disrespected, tired of his wife being disrespected with the nude photos on WWE.com, but his problems are nothing compared to the black cloud hanging over Jeff Hardy's head. Professes to be happy that Jeff and his girlfriend are fine after their auto accident, because he wouldn't want his win over Hardy when it comes to be tainted. In fact he says it's a story so good it deserves to be a motion picture. Cue the Titantron for a "Rated R" movie. At the end he says that's just a sneak preview, because the main feature will be at the Rumble when he defeats Jeff Hardy, where he'll prove Jeff's title run was just an ACCIDENT. Edge says he wants to confront Hardy face to face and invited him to join him on the Cutting Edge. Hardy comes out to HUGE pyro - perhaps too huge. Hardy goes down. Backstage personnel and medical people rush over as the cameras zoom in on everything, while we get a replay of Hardy selling for the pyros knocking him down. Edge's "black cloud" storyline continues.

How sad, Victoria's last match jobbing to the heatless Michelle McCool.

Hey, at least she didn't go out like Lita, having her dildo and monistat being sold to the crowd by Cryme Tyme. Still, I'm not very happy about it either.

Detailed spoilers from F4W:

Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter. Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter, Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter. Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter.

Hunter Hunter, Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter. Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter. Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter.

Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter. Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter, Hunter Hunter Hunter. Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter. Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter. Hunter Hunter "Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter?" Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter Hunter.

MVP breaking his losing streak could have been such a big deal, instead of just another chapter in Triple H Gets to Win, Vol. 11. At least with the streak broken, MVP can go back to being awesome for money.

Also, I'm disappointed with Victoria's immediate retirement. I'm guessing it's related to the cutbacks, or they would have at least given a week's notice. With Victoria retiring and Maryse injured, Smackdown needs more diva heels, stat. I don't want eight straight weeks of Michelle McCool posing and kicking people in the head. Could Gail Kim conceivably return as a heel?

Well, it seems they're planning to make Christian return as a heel, so I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to get Gail Kim to come back as a heel.

The pyro angle actually looked pretty cool. It was a lot better than last week's "police footage". And so far there's been some pretty original stuff in this Jeff stalker angle, which is good to see. I just hope the payoff is as good as expected... i.e. Christian's return

Yeah, Cult of Personality was so fitting for that Austin video.

I really do not think that Victoria is "retiring" as opposed do just doing a job before she ends up on the chopping block too. WWE hasn't exactly been gracious in choosing who they let go.

But I am sticking to my stance in the original retirement thread. If she really is gone, I am done with WWE.
