This is pretty stupid. They are doing this for health reasons? Uh, if someone is unhealthy, they probably shouldn't be eating at McDonalds at all. Thin Skinned February 29, 2004 There has been a few stories in the news of late that have gotten on my nerves. It's been eating at me a while so I thought I would say something here. I've come to the conclusion that the world is far too thin skinned. The need to be politically correct, in order not to offend has gotten out of hand. There are three specific news stories that have been sticking in my craw. The first was uproar over comments made by Hockey commentator Don Cherry, during a broadcast of his Coaches Corner show. I didn't see the show but I heard about the incident in the news for the better part of a week. During the show they were talking about players wearing face shield. Cherry made a comment about how only Europeans and Frenchmen wear face shields. The implication, I'm told, is that he thinks they are wimps for doing so. French Canadian hockey players were offended and there was actually talk of cancelling Cherry's show, or adding additional tape delay to the broadcast to allow for censoring. Let me start by saying that Don Cherry is basically employed for his controversial nature. He is the equivalent of a Jesse Ventura of hockey play by play. His whole appeal is that he is a macho, meathead kind of guy, that says things real people want to say. His motto would likely be, "Win if you can, lose if you must, but always fight." Is what he said really so bad? No one even seems concerned whether there is even any truth in what he said. They are just concerned that he offended people. Does anyone really care whether French players wear more face shields that other players? Does or should anyone care if Don Cherry thinks certain players are wimps? Should he not be allowed to, not only have his own opinion, but vocalize it? The rest of us should take his statements for what they are, "his opinion". The second incident was over comments made by Conan O'Brian, while filming his show in Toronto. Again I didn't see the show but the Canadian news was in a huge uproar over some French jokes Conan made. People in Quebec were offended and demanded an apology for off colour comments made by Conan. Conan eventually did apologize for his statements and everyone seems to have calmed down. This again is absurd to me. First off, they are jokes people lighten up. People make Blonde jokes, French jokes, Jock jokes, it doesn't mean we have anything against any of the aforementioned groups. Also guilting someone into an apology accomplishes what? Do they now not mean it anymore or are they just regretting saying it out loud. I think we need more of people being honest not less. The last incident happened in Calgary. Our former Prime Minister Jean Chretien "allegedly" made an offensive remark to a Native American man (or is that Native Canadian man up here?) while riding an elevator with him in the Provincial Court House. The guy had a water bottle attached to his waste pouch and the former Prime Minister "Allegedly" commented that the man must have some Gin in the bottle. The guy is now in the news demanding an apology from Mr. Chretien's for his "racial slur". HOLD THE PHONE! "Racial Slur" this threw me for a loop. When I heard the comment I thought it was a crack on the provincial court, making the statement that if you had to spend the day in Provincial court you would need a stiff drink. The fact that the man thought the comment was a racial slur about alcoholism and the native population makes me think perhaps he has some racial issues with his own people. I would have never made that connection, and the fact that he assumed that that was the inference makes me think he may have the problem, more so than Mr. Chretien. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the world needs to lighten up. We take offence so easily and have lost our ability to be confident in ourselves and ignore what others think. What happen to, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me." Not to mention the whole "free speech" thing. I can't believe that the first amendment can be sited by guys like Larry Flint to legalize pornography, yet it does not extend to our right to actually say what we want, even if we want to say something stupid. There are a lot of stereotypes out there and we should accept them for what they are, stupid generalizations that don't apply to everyone. We all know that: not all Native Americans are drunks, not all Muslims are terrorists, not all Black Kids are in gangs, not all Asians have small penises and do well in math, not all Blondes are stupid, and not all Jocks are illiterate steroid monkeys.
