Not exactly. In the metal parlance, if you don't like any metal bands, you shouldn't really say Metallica sucks because you're not in a position to decide. A person who doesn't like metal at all would say that Slayer sucks as well (I'm assuming you like them based on naming yourself after them). So it's not really this band or that band that they're judging, it's the style. The same is true here. Without liking reggae, you can't really single out Bob Marley as being particularly bad. Whatever standard is used to judge how good or bad he may be, you're already prejudiced against it.

Recommending Weasels Ripped My Flesh to me was a good call. I loved it to death. I also listened to Freak Out!, and I was saying "Hey, this is pretty good.", but then WRMF totally converted me to Zappa. I intend to jump into his catalog with both feet.

Because it's bad. Exactly, Bob Marley isn't overrated, you just don't like reggae. But Bob Marley is beyond music. He's in the class with Presley, Morrison, and Robert Johnson. Calling his music overrated is missing the point. I don't love the guy, I'm just pointing it out. Reggae is ok. I like ska better, and I don't like ska that much. But it is impressive that an extremely culture based style, from a small and in some ways insignificant area became world recognized and appreciated, mostly because of Bob Marley. I can respect that.
