We run the same basic Westminster system with checks & balances and all that jazz. But why do you do the voting for control of parliament and vote for the person running the country 2 years apart?

This may seem like a dumb question, but why do you guys have separate polls for who controls the parliament and who is the president. Down here, we don't actually vote for who we want to be PM, we vote for the candidates in our electorates and whoever has the majority of seats in the House of Reps is the Government.

According to a report I read they have 30 days to appeal. The appeal proceedings themselves may take as long as the 9 panel appeal court wants. Then if the appeal is thrown out he must be executed withing 30 days.
