  1. Your newspaper experience seems to completely mirror everyone else I've known who has worked in that industry. Long hours and low pay for thankless work. It's an industry in turmoil right now, and doesn't seem to be getting better. Honestly, the only people who read papers anymore are middle aged and older. A lot of advertisers are finally realizing these facts, and cutting back on the dollars they put towards newspaper ads. Consequently, positions at papers don't get refilled, or one guy is expected to do the work of three people. Not exactly a big growth field. $30,000/yr isn't that bad, starting out. People often think that a college degree automatically entitles you to a great high paying job, but it doesn't anymore unless you graduate with something you can use in a high demand, niche sort of field. Hell, when I graduated, the economy was horrible (shortly after Sept. 11th), and all I could find was a mediocre retail sales job. I wasn't making much more than $20,000 a year. Thankfully I soon got married and my wife had a good job where we didn't have to worry about how we were going to pay rent or utilities. Worked there a couple years, gained sales experience, and then when I realized I basically had zero advancement opportunity, I left and did outside advertising sales for a couple years. Wasn't making tremendously more money, but at least I could wear a suit to work and carry myself with some self-respect, usually. The benefits were at least OK, and I didn't have to literally go into work angry every day, like when I was in retail. Now I'm self employed and finally making decent money. My point is, it doesn't happen overnight. It usually takes at least a couple years to really establish a career for yourself after college. If you want to be a cop though, be a cop. Don't let other people affect your life...you're the one that has to be happy with yourself, not other people.
  2. I actually agree with this. The argument that gets put out: "You can't sustain a family on a minimum wage job!" is also a joke. You're not supposed to sustain a family with that kind of job, period. Those jobs are for high school kids, college students, and people who just need a second or part time job. The minimum wage isn't and shouldn't be designed so that someone can support a family of four with one minimum wage job. It's ridiculous.
  3. I don't know why you put radio in quotation marks. Basically, if I recall, it was a syndicated program that ran on radio stations throughout the country. I think it usually aired during weekends. I never heard it, because it didn't seem to be in my area. In pre-internet days, it was pretty hard to check up on this stuff. I remember them talking about airing matches and having discussion about WWF happenings when they would plug it on TV, though.
  4. The whole thing just seemed to have no direction at all. If they had just made it cut and dry "The young guys are trying to get their shot, and the older stars are holding them down" and stuck to that, it could have been good. But, typical Russo, they threw in too much soap opera crap and, as mentioned, basically made everyone act heelish. Just a big mess in the end. I remember one typical comment around that time, when they'd have someone like Kidman wrestle Hogan on Nitro and job "Just because a guy is jobbing higher up on the card, doesn't mean he's being elevated."
  5. Are they retarded? I hope Howard Dean is reaming these idiots.
  6. Link from Drudge: TIM RUSSERT DIES FROM APPARENT HEART ATTACK By CHARLES HURT New York Post June 13, 2008 -- "Tim Russert, NBC journalist and political heavyweight host of "Meet the Press," has died after collapsing at NBC's Washington news bureau, a source said. He was 58 years old. Russert, who rose from the inside world of politics where he was former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo's press secretary and one-time chief of staff to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, was able to successfully cross over to political journalism and rise to become one of its leading lights." Wow, really unexpected. I feel bad for his family.
  7. Do we have to draw you a picture? Nuclear power used for electricity would mean less oil and gas used to power homes and businesses, lowering demand for those commodities and subsequently lowering gas prices. And why the hell are you talking about nukes? Like others have pointed out, France and other countries are using nuclear power plants to generate power, without ensuing nuclear holocaust. Hell, we have a few here, let's not forget. The nuclear waste boogey man is a poor excuse not to pursue further expansion of nuclear energy in the US.
  8. You mean you can't use it for electricity for houses and stuff?
  9. Didn't we already have this thread a couple months ago?
  10. I've often wondered if people like Coulter, Hannity, and Limbaugh are on some secret GOP payroll.
  11. They gave up being Rhodesia for this?
  12. It wouldn't surprise me if something like that happened at this point. It would send a message, to an extent. I'm surprised there hasn't been more violence in regards to gas prices in general. Are we just becoming too sedate as a society?
  13. Yeah, Finlay's happy face music sucks.
  14. Tiffany looks like Kelly Kelly. I was confused at first.
  15. From Drudge: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/worl...icle4107327.ece This is fascinating. I do think Bush is probably a well meaning man who is either incompetent, or has simply made horrible choices (maybe both), and this sort of confirms it, if he is sincere.
  16. A while ago the topic was brought up of "Why does WWE keep bringing back 'Legends' from the '80s, but hardly ever the '90s?" At least this partly answers that. Nice to see them bring back someone who isn't completely over the hill and can probably still work.
  17. Speaking of doing the same match, the Bushwhackers fell in that category. Even as a little kid, I didn't like them, and knew they were nothing special in the ring.
  18. Right. I guess part of my point is that it's absurd for people to pretend this person is a man.
  19. Why is that?
  20. Saw this on Drudge. Just wondering if this idea completely sickens anyone else? http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/0806_exclu...gnant_man.shtml
  21. I have no idea why we're discussing Humphrey right now.
  22. Actually, I think the McCain ad is fairly effective for the message it's trying to get across. It distances him from Bush while still giving the "I'm going to keep you safe" message.
  23. Do I even have to say what I'm thinking here?
  24. Nice report, but it doesn't matter. It's not like Bush or any of his upper level cronies will ever get punished for this war.
