  1. I honestly don't think Peterson's the kind of guy that would kill again. I think the death penalty should be reserved for people that you can't let back into society because of the chances that they'll relapse. On the other hand, I can understand where the family and friends of Laci are coming from, having lost friends to a serial killer currently on death row. I wouldn't want that scum anywhere else. But if I can try to strike a balance, moving one-time murderers back into any neighborhood is going to be met with resistance from neighbors and a social stigma. I think with a long jail sentence, however, they can eventually be introduced back into society. Peterson, don't know, since his case was national news. Of course someone should be heavily punished for such an act, but if it's unlikely they'll ever relapse, we should strongly ask ourselves if maybe they shouldn't automatically be thrown in the same pool as the Tim McVeighs and people who can't be turned around.
  2. As much as I like him as a comedian, I have to say that his Vegas act is awful. When I was there, he admitted that he was basically using us as a focus group for jokes he was thinking of using for his next HBO special, and then made a whole bunch of jokes about air travel security. I don't remember whether this before or after 9/11, to Carlin it probably wouldn't matter either way (which is part of what I like about him), but he basically decided to tell a bunch of hijacking jokes to a room full of tourists who flew into town. I'd even forgive that if it weren't for the whole "you guys are a warm-up act for my HBO show, ok?" thing. Still, I don't know why he moved from MGM (which is a big name on the Strip) to Stardust (an older, non-fancy hotel in the near-dead part of the Strip.) Considering that the other act that MGM runs in that theater is Carrot Top, well, Carlin's gotta be better than that, right?
  3. You can try that but see if you can try my thing and find out which file is flunky. I had this happen to me before, my computer used to restart while playing games. I turned off the restart and got a BSoD regarding a video card driver file. Replaced it and things went fine.
  4. Right click My Computer, click Properties. Click Advanced tab. Click the Settings button under "Startup and Recovery" (near the bottom.) A new window will pop up. A checkbox near the bottom says "Automatically restart." Uncheck it. Click OK until you've closed all these windows. By default, XP tries to restart upon getting a Blue Screen of Death. By turning that off, you can sometimes see what file is causing these problems. So leave your computer on, and expect to see a Blue Screen eventually. If you're still having mysterious restarts out of nowhere, then it's probably not a software problem and just a dying power supply.
  5. Rant's actually got a pretty good idea there, actually. That card won't be current for as long as the ones I suggested, but if the rest of your computer is up to snuff that should give you what you need to play. And then whenever you find yourself behind again, you can just go ahead and replace the whole computer if you want to, which is a lot easier than upgrading everything or putting parts from an old computer into a new one.
  6. Santa Claus is a religious symbol now? "Stop dressing like a secular icon! This a non-religious school!"
  7. System requiretments, according to GameSpot: * System: 1.2 GHz Athlon or 1.2 GHz Pentium® III processor or higher or equivalent * CD-ROM: 4X CD-ROM * Video Memory: 64 MB VRAM * Hard Drive Space: 3300 MB * Other: 384MB of RAM (512 reccomended); 3D hardware accelerator card required; This game is based on the Source engine, and ATI Radeon cards tend to work a little better for it than NVidia cards do. Since you probably don't want to spend the outrageous fortune for a high-end card, that minor boost might be kind of important. Radeons come in a variety of model numbers, and any current model will be able to play what that game demands at decent image quality settings. On the other hand, you already have NVidia drivers and stuff installed for your TNT2, so moving to another NVidia card would be less of a computer hassle (I had to wipe and start over when changing brands on my computer, which is a pain in the rear.) If you choose to go for the Nvidia route, look up the GeForce6600 line. If that costs too much, go down to the 5xxx series, but the 6600 is a great deal for the money and will last you quite a while.
  8. You need to buy a whole new video card. No matter how updated the drivers are, the TNT2 is a card from around 1997/98, and Bloodlines is a recent game that runs on the same powerful engine as the current shooter hit Half-Life 2. You're going to need to spend money on a new video card, open up your computer, take out the TNT2, and replace it with a new one. Even then, if the rest of your computer is as old as that card, you're going to have problems. Basically, it's time to spend money on a new computer again if you want to be a gamer.

  10. Oy. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ If there's no viruses or you can't get that to run either, they're either going to have to deal with it or wipe and make a fresh install of Windows. People who don't know about spyware until it's too late usually have messed their computers up beyond saving. That the 9x OSes are about as stable as a house of cards doesn't help matters much either.
  11. No. Use VirtualDubMod.
  12. You're probably watching an OGM movie. Windows Movie Maker is very picky about the kinds of video it'll accept and that pretty much excludes the codecs used in downloadable video.
  13. Ad-Aware. Teach them to run it and how to keep it updated. Tell them what spyware is and, to stay on the safe side, tell them not to trust any other program that tells them it'll get rid of spyware.
  14. I've always wanted to see the musical production. It was in San Francisco for so many years but my Dad hates San Francisco so we never get to go. I'd be interested in this but Schumaker or however his name is spelt didn't inspire confidence in me, and the comment about a changed ending doesn't make me happy either. I think I shall wait for when it premieres in Las Vegas as The Venetian hotel's signature entertainment offering.
  15. This battle is won not on truth but on sarcasm.
  16. They can't. This is only because defending the sacred religious roots of Christmas against hordes of undead Liberals and soccer moms and Muslims is the new trendy thing to do in the conservative camp. But then, who am I say? I'm some godless America-hating fag who's just spiteful because he lost the election. Still, never have a people with such dominance over our future complained so much about being under-represented in society.
  17. How in the fuck does that help business? How does Joe Mark sitting in the grandstands understand the political motivations behind that? If you're going to job guys out for fun and not for profit, then do it at a fucking house show.

  19. Remember when he kicked out all the taxmen? Hey, those taxes pay for what you like to call "our daily bread," hippie. Get a job!
  20. That's okay, EPD. This won't be a problem when EA decides that they're big enough to launch their own console and go 100% exclusive to it. Ports? What ports?
  21. Oh, lordy lordy lordy. I guess I'll go with Benoit VS HBK for Backlash. The one time where Montreal parallels aren't just appropriate, but pretty much a given. The Montreal factor is only played up in a cheesy way in the middle of the actual match (instead of, you know, before) that pissed off the crowd for breaking up an otherwise great match with a cheesy "Shawn reverses the Sharpshooter while Hebner dashes into the ring" moment. The whole place chants for Bret so hard that you could probably hear it outside the building, so Shawn turns heel for one night and then returns to his stale babyface persona the very next.
  22. Except then you have an old fart no-selling a finisher, although I guess it'll be excused for the guys involved. That's my own problem with Bradshaw. The clothesline is such a heavily-used move that there's very little to distinguish a clothesline and THE clothesline. The legdrop was just a friggin' legdrop, but it had such a show that it left people saying "Ooh, he's not getting up from that one!" I only saw two Bradshaw matches live, one hardcore that I think ended with a chairshot and one during the APA reunion when they jobbed, so I've never been able to tell myself, but I can't imagine that without an announcer shouting about the Clothesline From Hell whether I'd be able to actually say "That's the big move." The clothesline finish seems like it could just as easily look like a botched finish to a live crowd ("I think he was supposed to kick out of it, it was just a clothesline.) as it could be seen as intentional.
  23. As long as it's not the main event, no. Heck, I'd be more curious who everyone decides the better worker is. However, the finish is probably rather lame if Hogan jobs clean, since the big clothesline is nowhere near the whole Hulk Up/Legdrop routine in terms of pops and a sense of finality.
  24. Internet Explorer technology is built into Windows and is used for browsing the local filesystem as well as by other programs. You can disable IE the browser by unchecking it in Add/Remove Windows Components (inside Add/Remove Software), but you can not entirely remove IE's library. For this reason it's important that, even if you abandon IE as a browser entirely, you pay attention to it's security updates. IE has been hooked in as a vital organ to Windows since about 1999 or so.
  25. Have you updated Norton lately? That part is always important. Otherwise, it sounds like some kind of malware. Probably a drive-by install since you're probably smart enough to not install crazy 3rd party toolbars and extensions.
