    Best Live Album

Trying to avoid mentioning anything that's already been mentioned, but I must say that Live At Leeds is my favorite live album of all time, right off the bat. Aside from that... The Rolling Stones -- Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! You'll basically like this as much as you like the Stones. I think they're pretty good, so this is pretty good to me, but to people who are real fans of the band seem to think it's heaven. So take thas as you will. Siouxsie and the Banshees -- Seven Year Itch Again, depends on how much you like the band. This is from the reunition tour this year, and they play for the true fans -- picking cult favorites from the earlier records over commercial hits for most of the show. The Grateful Dead -- Live/Dead Really captures the Grateful Dead live experience... which you might enjoy more if you're high, but oh well. Might choose one of those Dick's Picks albums over this... I suppose it depends on which track listings you like better. Phish -- Hampton Comes Alive All you'll ever really need as far as Phish is concerned, though that series of like 20 live discs are still there for your choosing too, as some have some very interesting track listings... from covering the entire White Album to a meeean version of the Breeders' "Cannonball." The Clash -- Live: From Here to Eternity C'mon, the Clash rule it. If you're the type of guy who likes the Clash enough to buy past the first three albums, then you'll definitely want to pick this up. The Talking Heads -- Stop Making Sense Like pretty much every album I've mentioned so far -- if you like the band, you'll love it, if you don't... well, even if you don't, picking up the movie is something you should still do. Damn Byrn and the gang could put on a good stage show. The Ramones -- We're Outta Here! The Ramones' last show ever I believe, taking place in '96. Perhaps not their best live album, but it's still fuckin' grand, and worth having for historical purposes alone if you can find it cheap. Cream -- Live Cream, Vol. 2 MUCH better than Volume 1, and just a fun album overall. Lou Reed -- American Poet Could very well replace the Who as my favorite live album ever. It's just brilliant. Of course, it's not a huge arena show... it's a small radio set, much like Nirvana Unplugged, but there's just so many great songs and so much energy going into them, it's nearly impossible not to love this. Lou plays the best of his early solo stuff, and some really good VU tunes, and it's all gravy, baby. Definitely worth picking up. ...That's all I can think of now, but I suppose that's not too bad considering that I threw in more names than anyone else so far. Aside from what I mentioned, I'd check out pretty much anything Pink Floyd-related, namely some of the Wall live shows and what was mentioned by those before me, and The Jimi Hendrix Concerts. OH! OH! OH! And but of course... Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! Can't leave that one out.

    The best of 2003

Hrm... the Darkness album... the Siouxsie and the Banshees reunition tour album... and... uh... well, I suppose that's about it. As for soundtracks however, Kill Bill, Vol. 1, Lost In Translation, and Wonderland were all superb. Probably better than any actual albums released all year, especially the former two. Oh, and Costello's newest album was good, although (unsurprisingly) not up to par with his older stuff at all. Same with the last Strummer effort.

Rolling Stones Top Ten Movies of 2003.

    1. Kill Bill, Vol. 1 2. Lost In Translation 3. Mystic River Eh, those're my top three, and they all made it, so I have no huge problems. I think that Intolerable Cruelty would be a nice addition though, as though it wasn't up to the usual Coen-standards, it was still quite a good and very underappreciated movie this year. Though if it made the list, I'd put it at like 10, but still.

movies that need to be put on DVD

For movies, I'd say #1 for me is Eraserhead, along with a whole bunch of Marx Brothers movies (only four are on DVD, I believe.) As for TV shows... we need Daria. Now. Desperately. PLEASE GIVE US DARIA.

    An Opinion Or Two...

Right, so I'm making a spiffy little compilation double-album for myself basically mapping out the progression of British music (Invasion, stadium-rock, punk, new wave, heavy metal, Radiohead)... and it pretty much includes one song from every major British band ever, with a few exceptions (2 from the Clash, 3 from Zeppelin, 2 from the Beatles, and 2 from Bowie, though one's his "Under Pressure" duet with Queen)... anyhow, in looking up all of these British bands, there were a few that I must admit I really have no clue about, and so I'm not sure which song to include of theirs, really. It doesn't really have to be their #1 hit (I'm purposefully avoiding the Knack's "My Sharona" for example)... but I'm looking for songs that sort of just epitomize the sound of the band, or the type of music they produced. Anyhow, I don't have songs for the following bands, and so if anyone listens to these bands (I know there're a lot of Iron Maiden fans around here)... any suggestions on which song to include would be welcome. ...and eh, just to add a discussion factor to the post, anything British music-related is welcome, too. Madness The Jam The Kinks The Animals The Yardbirds The British Beat Iron Maiden XTC Wire Again, thanks to anyone who contributes anything worthwhile.

    Musical Tournament!

Didn't bother to read through all of the nominations, so if I renominate something... sorry. Little Shop of Horrors West Side Story My Fair Lady Fantasia Carmen Mary Poppins Grease Hedwig and the Angry Inch Tommy Funny Face Jailhouse Rock Jesus Christ Superstar Babes In Toyland The Wizard of Oz Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Hrmph, chances are half of those have been named already, but oh well. EDIT: Oh, and what about the South Park movie and Purple Rain? Do concert movies that were released in theaters count? Like the Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense and Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains the Same? The former unfolds like a story and is actually very theatrical and movie-like, if you ask me.

    An Opinion Or Two...

Alright, "Train In Vain" is being replaced by "Lost In the Supermarket," and I'm adding one more song to each disk. So, Oasis, just because they were so popular in the '90's... Echo and the Bunnymen, because I can't believe I forgot them... Cradle of Filth... hrm, never heard more than a song or two from them, but I figure that I might want some black metal on there... aaaand... lesse, I'm sort of torn between the Pogues, the Specials, and the Undertones. Anyone got any arguments on why to choose one band over the other two? Also, any reccomendations for which Oasis/EatB/CoF songs to include? Any further help would be included... *sigh* and after this, the track list shall be FINAL. Heh. EDIT: Undertones are no longer an option, as they formed in Ireland... was kind of wondering why I left them out. Also, I could leave Cradle of Filth out and include a later-days Elvis Costello song to show how much his sound changed... but, I dunno. I need to have this all figured out by Wednesday, so still, any help = appreciated.

    Best Beatles Cover

Yeesh, can't believe I forgot THAT. Glad Siouxsie Sioux is getting some credit in this thread. I might actually like that version better than the Beatles'. I dunno, the spacy feel and feminine vocals just do it for me on that particular song, I guess. And this says a lot, as I REALLY like the Beatles' version. Other than that... yeah, Cocker's cover tops the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends," I think... it just gives the song a whole new edge. Oh, and does anyone have any opinions on Phish's live covers of several Beatles songs? I've never heard any of them, but apparently some of 'em are pretty good.

    Best Beatles Cover

    (Y) @ the Breeders doing "Happiness is a Warm Gun." Speaking of Kim Deal covering the Beatles, the Pixies did a cover of "Wild Honey Pie," which is on Pixies at the BBC I believe... it's nothing that I would really listen to more than a few times, seeing as how the original itself is probably my least favorite song off of The White Album, but it's definitely interesting in comparison. As a reviewers once said I believe, the cover shows that the Pixies could take any song and make it their own.

    An Opinion Or Two...

"Train in Vain" is indeed on there, and it replaced "Lost in the Supermarket." I like the latter a bit better, actually, but... actually, I don't know why I switched to "Train In Vain," but I did. But at least it's something off of the Clash's masterpiece. Anyhow, all of the other complaints are noted, but that's the final list as of now... only thing I'm utterly devestated about is leaving off Echo and the Bunnymen. I don't know how the fuck I forgot about them, but it's a terrible terrible loss to not have them on there.

    An Opinion Or Two...

Eh, I know they're the big British chart-toppers of the '90's and all, but I've got Blur on their for the '90's pop stuff, so I'll just leave them off. Besides, I hate Oasis too. The only other two that I know that I left off are Culture Club and Robyn Hitchcock, but meh. I think I'll leave it as it is.

    CD Suggestions

<--- Is very good friends with his nephew. Anyhow, pick up This Year's Model by Elvis Costello or any of Bowie's more prestigious albums. All considered sort of "mandatory" for anyone with a large album collection.

    Top Five Music Videos

"Smells Like Nirvana" -- Weird Al The Weezer one with all the Muppets, though it's one of their weaker songs... The Beastie Boys -- "Sabotage" "Give It Away" -- Red Hot Chili Peppers The Breeders -- "Cannonball" (just such a fun song, and I <3 Kim Deal) Oh, and I was gettin' crazy on Offspring's "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)" when I was a young retard... as opposed to, you know, an old one.

    Rolling Stone magazine's newest list

London Calling has been regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time for a long time - way before Joe Strummer kicked it. From where I sit, perhaps only Exile on Main St. manages to be as good as long and as consistently as London Calling. Hrm, what about Zen Arcade and Sign 'O' The Times, Edwin? ...By the way, where IS Zen Arcade on this list?
