Agree. What happened to the HBK from the Jericho feud? If HBK just returned from a long hiatus I would buy into this character change. Because the Jericho feud was a blood rivalry. The feud with JBL wasn't as intense, and now it's turning to HBK losing money because of the bad economy, and JBL can help him out and feed his family by HBK working for JBL. Not that hard a concept to understand.

I read on some site a month or two ago that Ortiz's gimmick is going to be exactly what you said. I believe the article said the creative team realizes he's got not a lot to offer, so why they use this as a gimmick and keep him on TV is beyond me.
