The Old School questions thread

Recommended Posts

When did the Beserker, Barbarian, and the Warlord leave WWF, and when did they show up in WCW?

The Powers of Pain were gone from the WWF in early 1992. I think in Warlord's case it definately had something to do with the steroid testing.

Barbarian showed up in WCW that spring and was one-half of the last US Tag Team Champions alongside Greg Valentine. He then had a brief main event push against Ron Simmons that fall and was pushed down the roster late 92/early 93 and left again.

A few years later, Barbarian & Warlord showed up on the 1/1/96 Nitro as the masked "Super Assassins", managed by Col. Parker, and were squashed by Sting & Luger.

Berzerker left the WWF in 1993 and showed up ... I want to say around 97/98 as John Nord.

You know how sometimes the WWF and now the WWE as it is unfortunately called has had title matches I mean World Title obviously well has a face ever won the title during one of these matches? I feel like the face always retains or the heel always wins and the face has never won the title during one of these matches.

Thanks.

So you're asking if faces have ever won a World Title Match?

Well how the hell can faces RETAIN a title if he didn't win it in the first place? are you like for real or someone's idea of a Forrest Gump gimmick poster?

I just realized why this is a what the fuck type of question. I never mentioned in the middle of a show. I meant that if they ever won the title in the middle of the show. My fault and yeah that would have sounded retarded. I answered it myself though so no worries.

Thanks.

About the Barbarian/Slater/Valentine confusion

Valentine/Taylor and Slater/Barbarian were US Tag Champs in May/June

during the summer Valentine/Slater had a mini feud with Dustin Rhodes and Barbarian/Dan Spivey were squashing jobbers

Edit: Valentine/Slater/Barbarian did two 6 mans against Rhodes/Windham/Steamboat in August on Pro and Worldwide, Valentine pinned Rhodes in one and Windham got KO'd by Barbs foot in the other.

Watching the Bloodsport DVD, and they were talking about Dreamer's back in the Dream/Anderson I Quit Match. Did he really mess his back up, or was that kayfabe?

Dreamer's back had been fucked up for well over a year before that match. It was two herniated discs, I believe.

Yeah, I definitely remember Gertner saying that on TNN.

I always thought that's why Dreamer was programmed against Steve Corino in 1999. Gave him a bit of a break from hardcore battles w/o taking time off.

Something else I was wondering.

When Chris Benoit was introduced as the fourth member of the Four Horsemen in 1995, was there any real build up? All I remember was seeing a backstage segment on WCW Saturday Night where Arn Anderson and Brian Pillman were talking, and Arn introduced Benoit as the newest Horseman. At the time I hadn't had the chance to follow WCW much because I was at prep school, and didn't really no who he was yet. (Didn't have the internet at our house yet, either).

not that I recall, Benoit had just returned to wcw in sept I guess and had a few tag matches with malenko and some matches vs Eddy then suddenly he was the newest horseman

I know this is a rather random question, but I need clearification on this rumor that's been floating around for a while:

Did Randy Savage really beat his former girlfriend Gorgeous George?

Follow-up question to all the Valentine/Taylor/Barbarian/Slater teams ...

Sometimes two random guys were thrown together as a team, even though they didn't fit gimmick-wise. (Barbarian/Slater, for example, or JYD/Ivan Koloff) Did they team up because they were friends behind the scenes, or were they thrown together because the bookers had nothing else for them to do?

Usually the latter.

Teams like Taylor/Valentine and Barbarian/Slater are why the US Tag Team Titles were dropped (which I always thought was a stupid move that helped kill a tag team division that was already on life support).

Had a thought from reading a thread in the WWE forum, and thought it could be a fun discussion:

Bill Eadie had two separate, very successful careers in wrestling. He wrestled as the Masked Superstar and was very successful in the territory days, feuding with guys like Flair, Backlund, Andre the Giant, etc. He won several NWA titles, including the Georgia Heavyweight Title. Then, he went to the WWF and became Demolition Ax, one half of the most successful '80s tag teams, and was a tag team champion there. Heck, you could even make the point that Eadie had success in his early days as one of the Mongols (Bolo).

My question is, what other wrestlers can you think of that had two or more separate, successful personas or characters? And I don't mean they were just on TV, they had to have made a significant impact. I'm not including guys that underwent simple name changes but kept the same gimmick (eg. Team 3D/Dudley Boyz).

Not really an answer to your question, but an interesting note on his run as the Masked Superstar. According to Eadie, he was originally booked to be one to defeat Bob Backlund for the world title.

Vince, however, felt that he would be forever remembered as the transitional champ to Hulk, and had too much respect for him to put him in that position (look at Sheik's career path after his reign).

Not sure how true it is, but an interesting note nonetheless.

Hogan?

The All American superhero in the eighties, and the evil, egomaniac during his NWO days.

Bob Backlund 70's/80's and Bob Backlund 90's- one a babyface technician, the other a crazy old man- both World Champions....

Dare I mention Mick Foley/Cactus Jack/Mankind/Dude Love?

Sting. Bodybuilder, superhero type in the late eighties to mid nineties, and then Crow Sting in the later years.

Krusher Kruschev / Smash / Repo-Man / Blacktop Bully / Stewart Pain / Barry Darsow!!!

oh wait you said successful... well the Russians were pretty hated and Demolition were awesome, Repo-Man cracked me up and... no I can't say anything nice about the last 3 personas

I knew Darsow would come up.

With guys like Sting, Hogan, and Backlund...those are all good points, but they were all basically still the same character. Hollywood Hogan was still Hulk Hogan, Sting was still Sting, etc. You can't say Demolition Ax was still Masked Superstar, as they were completely different characters and it was never acknowledged that they were the same guy.

I think Foley would be the only one named so far that fits that mold, since Cactus Jack and ManKind at least were completely different characters, and both were pretty successful.

Another I was thinking of was Haku/Meng. Basically the same character though, just with a different name.

I knew what you were going for and Hulk/Hollywood just isn't what you were talking about cause it's still Hulk Hogan either way.

You were looking for people who were like "Merciless Masked Ming" in WCW and then came to the WWF and became an unmasked fitness guru or whatever you want to call it right?

So since you said successful Nova/Simon Dean doesn't count ;)

Since the mid 90ties or so it's been less about "reinventing" a guy when he changed federations - I mean there used to be a time where the WWF wouldn't even ackowledge that someone had wrestled elsewhere before joining them.

Btw. does Matt Borne / Big Josh/ Doink count?

After that Barbarian teamed up with Meng once more (Barbarian/Haku - what do you mean they weren't HUGE in the WWF?) and they formed the "Faces of Fear"

Which I kinda dug as a team at least initially
