dubq Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 True. But it's already been stated, Selena Kyle is dead in this movie. It's a new character and a new Catwoman. It's the same thing as Jim Rhodes [black] taking over for Tony Stark [white] as Iron Man after Stark "died"... [he didn't start using the War Machine name until after Stark had returned...]
The Ghost of bps21 Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Did she die in that movie? I thought it ended with her being alive.
dubq Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Did she die in that movie? I thought it ended with her being alive. In Batman Returns, I can't recall, but I think it does end with a shadow of her against the moon or something.. I could be remembering that wrong. But the premise of the Cat Woman movie is that she died.. and it probably happened sometime after the Batman Returns timeline... I dunno, I'm not trying to defend this movie as it's probably going to be a horrendous pile of shite.. but I'm just saying, it's okay to have a black actress playing the Cat Woman character when she's not supposed to be Selena Kyle in the first place.
Ripper Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 His roles are characters created out of nothing. None of them have been characters that have an actual following. More to the point...it would be like casting a white guy as Shaft. Thats not comparable. Thats like saying that Ed Nortons character in American History X could have been black. Shaft was a character that was built upon ethinicity. ONCE AGAIN, Liz Taylor was univerally praised for her role as Cleopatra, whatever white guy wants to play Jesus is praised for it. Ertha Kitt played Catwoman 40 + years ago. There is a precedent in the public eye of Catwoman being black. I still remember when Batman Returns came out this girl in my class asked why was Catwoman white in the movie. Basically saying, the character of catwoman in the comics and the one that has been presented to the non-comic viewing public are two different things. It is perfectly reasonable to have a black Catwoman because the theatrical precedent has already been set. Now Superman or Batman, I would see your argument, but not here. *gets around fire* And I got Michael Jacksons part in we are the world.
ant_7000 Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Like Rip said Liz Taylor and another white actress(ABC movie) played Cleopatra and no one said anything about that. I wouldn't mind to see a "White" Spawn or "white" Blade maybe because I don't follow comic books.
dubq Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Does it change the argument any if I say that Halle Berry is actually of mixed blood? Her father is black and her mother is white... I didn't think it would, I just felt like pointing that out...

dubq Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 ...I've just been reading around and aside from the "Selena is dead" premise.. other sites are rumoring that Pfeifer will reprise her role as Kyle in a mentor-ish relationship to Berry's character. Man, either way you slice it.. this movie has "BOMB" written all over it.
ant_7000 Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 I don't hear anybody complaining about the multiple actors that have played "James Bond" or "Batman" or anything. I also could say Duncan's role as the "Kingpin" could be borderline racist since he was big black intimidating criminal hustler, but me and other black people that I know don't have a problem with it.

Exactly. I could also bring up the fact that Billy Dee Williams played Harvey Dent in Batman, yet Tommy Lee Jones had the role in Batman Forever. If anything, I think that was a worse affront to the series since it was all supposed to be in the same timeline...
Downhome Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 I don't hear anybody complaining about the multiple actors that have played "James Bond" or "Batman" or anything. That is complete bullshit and is nothing like what we are talking about. Had one of the guys who played James Bond or Batman been black, THEN we'd talk about it.
Firestarter Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Shaddup-with-the-black/white-crap... Michael-Clark-Duncan-played-Kingpin,-nobody-seemed to-have-a-problem.I-actually-think-he-did-a-good-job (With-the-material-given),-although-he-was-horribly mis-used. Why-can't-we-just-hold-hands,-stand-around-a Campfire,-and-sing-"We-Are-The-Word"... Is-that-so-hard? I can't resist doing this from time to time. I get nostalgic about the old days.
starvenger Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Besides all of that, the premise of this movie is apparently that Selena is dead and that Patience is taking over the role of Catwoman, so technically it is a new character. Yeah, that worked well for Birds of Prey, didn't it? Maybe this Catwoman's in the same part of the DC multiverse - Earth-WTF. It's the same thing as Jim Rhodes [black] taking over for Tony Stark [white] as Iron Man after Stark "died"... [he didn't start using the War Machine name until after Stark had returned...] Rhodey was IM previous to that - he was the Iron Man that was originally part of the West Coast Avengers. I think this was the period when Stark was a raging alcoholic, but don't quote me on that one.

MrRant Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Well whenever I've read the comic books with Catwoman in it she was white and it was Selena Kyle. You could have just ended the whole entire argument by saying that Halle isn't playing Selena Kyle... you people dragged this on way too long.

eiker_ir Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 what's the plot of the movie? is she gonna be bad, good, what?
Zorin Industries Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 I don't really mind that Halle Berry is playing Catwoman, but that costume is hideous
Boner Kawanger Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 See, when I read the Berry was cast, I was actually happy. She kinda favors the current Catwoman, especially with her short hair and skin tone. But that costume just wrecks it. I mean, where are the goggles?
dubq Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Starvenger, I've not seen Birds of Prey, so I have no idea...
Kahran Ramsus Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Cleopatra was black and was played by Liz Taylor. Cleopatra was white. She was Macedonian, she and her family only ruled over the Egyptians following the conquests of Alexander. The Ptolemys certainly weren't black.
Nighthawk Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 Cleopatra (and Jesus as well) also didn't speak English, as they commonly do in films. Jesus probably didn't even have a beard.
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 Cleopatra was black and was played by Liz Taylor. Cleopatra was white. She was Macedonian, she and her family only ruled over the Egyptians following the conquests of Alexander. The Ptolemys certainly weren't black. Beat me to it. Also, she was not as beautiful as legend has it, and was actually fairly average. Just sayin'.
Kahran Ramsus Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 True. Caesar was attracted to her intelligence and power, not her looks. She was actually quite homely.
Kahran Ramsus Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 Cleopatra (and Jesus as well) also didn't speak English, as they commonly do in films. Jesus probably didn't even have a beard. Cleopatra spoke Greek. Jesus spoke Hebrew, I think. It is also true that the earliest portraits of Jesus portray him as white, clean shaven, with short hair, and dressed in Roman garments, but these are from well after his death. Nobody really knows what he really looked like. Cleopatra on the other hand had countless statues, busts, and paintings made of her that date to when she was alive. She certainly doesn't look beautiful like she does in later art, but she is white in them.
El Psycho Diablo Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 Personally, I don't care if they're black or white or whatever as long as they can fit the part. That's it. I just don't like Halle Berry one bit.
Kahran Ramsus Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 Had one of the guys who played James Bond or Batman been black, THEN we'd talk about it. Colin Salmon would make a great Bond, and I believe plays him in screen tests. Pierce Brosnan even recommended him as a possible replacement.
Vern Gagne Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 Here's a stupid idea I always had with James Bond. The name "James Bond" is nothing more than a secret secret code name for the top agent.
