Patrick Hannon on fire, laces six hits

 

ATLANTA - 'Wow, six hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Houston's third baseman Patrick Hannon after their 24-5 win over Atlanta. A 340 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd hit, a three-run homerun off Bill Blackshear in the 2nd inning. A pitch from Alberto Roberto in the 7th inning left his bat for a double. His 6th hit, a solo homerun off Tyrone Kiely in the 9th inning, cleared the fence in left field. He had singles in the 1st inning (one RBI) , in the 4th inning and in the 5th (one RBI). Patrick did drive in six runs while scoring five runs on his own. His six hit performance increases his batting average to .257.

Robert Henderson is human after all.

 

Well below .400, even with two months to go in the season, Big Red is going to have to fight to even get his third consecutive season in a row, let alone the outburst of offense he'll need to get back in the race for the elusive Triple Crown.

 

Henderson still leads second place Neall Isaacson by .021 points in the race for the batting title, but Isaacson himself is looking for a Triple Crown, 2nd in batting average and homeruns and third in the runs batted in category.

 

Meanwhile, the rest of the SFBL is really just falling in line. Gonzales passed the 100 career loss mark this month, but with 131 career wins-to-date, that isn't bad for a 39 year old who was a late bloomer in this league.

 

Ben Dover was mercifully released by the New Orleans Crunk Machine in July, and likely will not have a job for the rest of his career unless another expansion team gets desperate or a mainstream team suffers a major blow to their pitching staff, en masse.

 

The Hanoi Janes are hanging on, as Carlos DeSantis is hoping for a playoff berth, with a world championship being icing on the cake considering that he has spent his entire career in Atlanta without even having a taste of the postseason. Jacksonville and Houston are closing in fast, however, and doubts have been raised about Atlanta's pitching staff--Giant Gonzales be damned.

 

Only time will tell. Giant Gonzales has one, maybe two more years left with the Hanoi Janes, and Carlos will follow suit soon enough--can Atlanta finally get the job done?

BTW, I'm doing a SFBL of my own right now with OOTP2. The Jokers won the inaugural title, beating Vancouver 4 games to 2, and in year 2, the Ignition beat Chicago 4 games to 1.

 

Game 5 in that series was pretty thrilling; the Ignition cruised through most of the game, building a 9-3 lead going into the 7th, but the Authority got 1 in the 7th, 2 in the 8th, and 3 in the 9th off the league's best closer, John Navarro to tie. It remained scoreless into the 12th until, with the winning run on third, Indy slugger Mother Moreno beat the throw on an infield hit as Cy Lindsby scored to clinch it.

Winston Ghandi has 2000 career hits

 

VANCOUVER - Winston Ghandi got a standing ovation from 43,705 fans in Vancouver, who witnessed Ghandi collecting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Winston picked up 230 homeruns and 1,121 RBI in 11 seasons. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' His hit in the 6th inning was a single off Hector Vassallo.

Houston's Hannon wins Player of the Week award

 

The North-South's best player of the week was Houston's Patrick Hannon, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Patrick went 17 for 31 (.548), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 15 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Patrick has gone 108 for 402 (.269) this season, hitting 29 taters and driving in 67 runs. He has scored 67 runs on his own.

Las Vegas' Edward James has great day, hits three longballs

 

LAS VEGAS - Edward James was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Las Vegas to a 13-2 win over Philadelphia by homering three times. In the 1st inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off C.J. Bulot. A 414 foot drive to left-center marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun off Bulot in the fifth inning. A pitch from Franklin Dickey in the 8th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 388 feet from home plate in right field. Overall he got 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three runs and collecting 8 RBI. So far this season he is batting .296 with 28 homers and 103 RBI. On May 8th, Arne Snider was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.

 

Monday, August 27th, 2016:

 

James (LV) and Henderson (VAN) win P.O.W. award

 

The Player of the Week award in the East-West goes to Las Vegas' Edward James this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive performance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .286 and hit .296, while driving in 15 runs. Robert Henderson wins his 19th Player of the Week award. North-South pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Robert was on fire, hitting .450 with 3 homeruns and 8 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to eleven games. His season features a batting average of .384 (192 hits in 500 AB), 31 doubles, 6 triples and 35 longballs. Henderson collected 110 RBI and 107 runs as well. He's 1st in the North-South in batting, 5th in homeruns and 3rd in RBI!

Notes: It's about time we entered the home stretch of this season, and we're entering it with a few intriguing stories--

 

* Robert Henderson's quest for .400...except now he's trying to raise his batting average to the astronomical level. With his batting average at .383 and 29 games to play, it's very possible that Big Red could hit a groove and find a way to climb back above the .400 level. As it is right now, it seems that yet another batting title is destined to be his, as Neall Isaacson is having a career year with a .346 batting average, but barring a collapse from Henderson, it won't amount to much.

 

* The Atlanta Hanoi Janes, now stuck in a tie with the Jacksonville Jackoffs for first place in the North-South's South Division. This is likely the only shot for either team--New Jersey currently leads the wildcard with a 77-56 record, two games behind the North Division-leading Columbus Pride. As it stands, it is very likely that either the Janes or the Jackoffs will enter the playoffs...not both.

 

* Pitchers below the .500 mark. Eric LeBeau, Marvin Jenkins, and Ann Onita are all starting pitchers who currently have a winning percentage under .500. There are only a few starts left for these pitchers, but it certainly has not been a banner year for any of these pitchers, let alone any pitcher in TSM period. Peter Kostka remains a success story, a former reliever turned starter who is now the best pitcher TSM has to offer right now. Unfortunately, his performance is not assisting the Jokers much, as they are sixteen games behind division leading Seattle in the West, and ten games behind Denver, who currently lead the East-West wildcard with a 76-57 record. Although Peter Kostka left the Columbus Pride for greener pastures (he assumed the Pride would never be SFBL Championship material--at least not during his career. However, he managed to leave to a team that doesn't seem ready to make the playoffs period. It is for those reasons that he has decided to become a free agent next season, hoping to land himself on a winning team...based on his performance this year, he might be a popular pickup during the free agency wars that teams will wage in early 2017.

 

* Expansion Watch: The South is so competitive this year, the New Orleans Crunk Machine are actually a credible playoff threat in that division, a slim eight games behind the co-leaders in Atlanta and Jacksonville. Although it's unlikely that New Orleans can string together a series of wins while the rest of the teams in the division collapse, this is one of the first times that an expansion team has been anywhere close to winning a playoff spot. Meanwhile, the other teams are not doing so well, with Kansas City a leading candidate for 100 losses this season, sitting on 87 with 29 to play. New Orleans competitive spirit, of course, comes from their surprisingly good W-L record: 62-71, damn close to .500 if nothing else.

 

And with that, league leaders are on the way as we head into the final stretch, so you can see if a TSM/SFBL record could possibly be broken.

THREE MORE GAMES

 

By October 1st, 2016, all playoff races had been decided except for the East and the South, both in opposite conferences.

 

In the East, it was a very tight race. Boston had a slim one game lead on New York, and Philadelphia was only one game behind New York! Both were in striking distance with three games to go, but many agreed that a LOT of things would have to go Philadelphia's way for them to advance to the playoffs.

 

The same was true in the South. With Atlanta two games behind, Atlanta would need to be perfect in the final three games, and Jacksonville would have to lose all three of their final games if Atlanta wanted to hold the top spot in the division outright. With no wildcard alternative for either of these teams, it was do or die in the South. Since Atlanta would not be facing Jacksonville in the final three games, the race was not as exciting as it could have been, however.

 

In the East, Boston and New York would not meet, but Philadelphia would get the opportunity to play both Boston and New York in the final three games for a chance to find some way to crawl into the top spot.

LOS ANGELES GLORY HOLES AT BOSTON TEA BAGGERS

 

The third double of the night for Todd Oviedo was a big one. With Joe Colopy on first base, Oviedo's double brought Colopy home without a formidable challenge, sending Boston home with a victory.

 

Los Angeles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second inning, but both Joe Colopy and Josmir Figuerres drove in runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-all until the ninth inning hit from Oviedo.

PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM AT NEW YORK BUMS

 

The Freedom's late comeback...was non-existent.

 

The Bums' bullpen shut down shop on the Freedom, ending their playoff hopes with a 5-4 victory on the strength of a big homerun in the fifth inning from Steven Boyster that brought home two runs and gave New York a lead that they would not relinquish.

 

New York was up 5-2 after that homerun, and gave up two runs in the next half-inning, but then Marvin Jenkins was removed from the game, and the rest was academic as the Bums' bullpen was airtight.

 

Jenkins picked up the victory to improve his record to 14-13 on the year.

 

PHILADELPHIA 4, NEW YORK 5

 

Philadelphia is eliminated from playoff contention.

 

INDIANAPOLIS IGNITION AT ATLANTA HANOI JANES

 

A late collapse from the bullpen ruined what could be Giant Gonzales' last career start, as Indianapolis may have sealed the Hanoi Janes fate in a 7-5 eleven inning thriller.

 

Michael Lucariello was at bat, representing the tying run with Jose Santillo on second, but his fly to deep left-center was not deep enough, and Atlanta fans dreaded the worst--that their team had once again been denied a playoff spot.

 

INDIANAPOLIS 7, ATLANTA 5 (11 INNINGS)

 

CHARLOTTE HARLOTS AT JACKSONVILLE JACKOFFS

 

There was plenty of extra inning excitement from teams in the South Division today. The game between Charlotte and Jacksonville was tied at 3-all going into extra innings, and an unlikely hero emerged from the wreckage that both teams had put themselves through in the marathon game.

 

Dondre Helm, pinch hitting for replacement shortstop Max Espino, who was replacing Joseph Corbin, hit a HUGE 2-run homerun in the 12th inning to give Charlotte a 5-3 lead in the top of the twelfth inning.

 

However, Jacksonville was not done. Down to their last out and running out of chances to put their rival Atlanta out of their misery, Paco Fernandez hit a clutch double down the left field line, bringing Samuel Pumarada home from first base as he chugged around the bases to shorten Charlotte's lead to one. Domingo Santana remained on the mound for the Harlots, however, and the batter went from Paco to Pico. Pico wasn't as good as Paco, however, as he hit a can of corn to short left-center, ending the game and keeping Atlanta alive for another day with a 5-4 victory in twelve innings.

 

Eric LeBeau left the game in the seventh inning with the game tied, in what will likely be the last start of the season for "Mr. Wonderful," who finished with a less than wonderful 11-15 record in 2016.

Jacksonville has clinched a tie in the South.

CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY AT NEW YORK BUMS

 

Chicago looked ready to play playoff baseball against the New York Bums.

 

With a 4-run inning in the seventh, Chicago ended a scoring flurry, destroying New York 10-3 as Chicago won their 97th game. The ball is now in Boston's court, if they win, they win the division. Otherwise, it will come down to a deciding final game on October 5th.

 

CHICAGO 10, NEW YORK 3

 

BOSTON TEA BAGGERS AT LOS ANGELES GLORY HOLES

 

Boston established a lead early and ran with it, taking the East division with them as they eked out a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Glory Holes, winning the East Division and advancing to the 2016 SFBL Playoffs.

 

David Smith went 3-for-4 with two homeruns, both two-run homeruns to propel Boston to victory.

 

Rolf Dreikugeln entered the game in the ninth inning for Boston and collected his 32nd save.

 

BOSTON 5, LOS ANGELES 3

 

Boston has won the East Division.

 

ATLANTA HANOI JANES AT NEW JERSEY CLERKS

 

In a game heated with controversy after Carlos DeSantis argued a strike three call in the first inning and got tossed, Atlanta's fans were left heartbroken again as North-South Wildcard Champions New Jersey won 3-1, eliminating Atlanta before the Jacksonville/New Orleans game started.

 

Two key RBI from Bill Anschitz and Omari Ropac in the eighth inning put Atlanta down for good, after they had managed to tie the game with Gene Looney's 7th inning solo homerun.

Jacksonville wins the South. Again.
