One and Only Anime Thread

So, apparently according to a certain videogame thread (and let me get a disclaimer out of the way: not looking to turn this into a debate of Japanese culture or the American anime fandom- just if you're watching an anime, talk about it. There), there's more people on this board who are at least casual anime fans than I thought- so here's a topic for all of us! What are you watching right now, what's your all-time favorites, and what do you want to see in the future?

Watching Right Now: X (up to ep. 12) and Angelic Layer (up to ep. 8). Both are CLAMP, so you know they're good- X in particular I'm really, really loving right now, and I think if it continues on this pace it's going to rank up there with one of my all-time favorites. The story is your basic end-of-the-world-battle stuff, but what makes it work (well, besides the fact that it's laid out much better than most animes of this type) is that it's a shoujo title, so rather than focusing on the big picture or one or two characters, you get lots of character development for lots of different characters. Not to mention that the art style is one of the most gorgeous things I've ever seen in my life. Really, it has to be seen to be believed. Highest reccomondation.

Angelic Layer, meanwhile, is just a fun tournament-battle title. Nothing I'd rank up there as an all-time favorite or anything, but the battles are done well enough and the show just has a very happy, nice flair to it. Same studio that did the X series I was just raving about so the animation is still top-notch (but for different reasons, obviously).

All-Time Favorites: Neon Genesis Evangelion (how could someone not watch this, anime fan or not? This is an incredible show that should be required viewing for anyone except the most fundemental of Christians), Gundam SEED (I actually like this better than the UC or Wing, which came as a surprise), Sailor Moon (yeah, snicker, but the Japanese version is untouchable, yo), FLCL (the single coolest anime ever made)

Want to See: Magical Shopping District Abernoshi (a new comedy from Gainax? OMG I'M THERE~!!!), Gunslinger Girl (seen one episode so far at my anime club and I MUST HAVE MORE~!!!- it's head-trippy, incredibly morbid stuff)

Macross Plus is the greatest OVA ever. I have a question about the Macross Plus Movie which supposely has some extra footage. Exactly how much extra footage is included on it and is it worth seeking out if I already have the episodes on DVD?

I haven't seen MP yet mainly because I was a never a giant Macross fan or anything, but anime precedent tells us that the most extra footage you're gonna get is 5-10 minutes of extra battle sequences.

*remembers buying the Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz DVD for the movie version after seeing the OVA....and getting like 3 extra minutes of the Gundams blasting other mobile suits. yay.*

I'm currently working through Noir, on the last volume. That is a very neat show which should not be missed. All time favorites include Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz, Excel Saga, CCS(I'm dead serious), Urusei Yatsura, DBZ(not as good as some say, not as bad as others say), Azumanga Daioh, Love Hina, Lupin III, and anything by Hayao Miyazaki.

I saw an episode of FLCL and it was...interesting. If there are only 6 episodes and they're spread out on 3 DVDs then why are they so friggen expensive?

I've pretty much seen all the anime shown on Adult Swim (InuYasha, Big O, FLCL, ect al). I'm also a big Neon Genesis Evangelion fan (obviously). Right now, I'm currently buying the Excel Saga DVDs (up to volume three).

Because companies like making money. Hehe.

And I don't know where you saw it but just wanted to say this in case you saw it on Adult Swim- despite being called "Adult Swim", they censored a lot of the funny jokes. Plus, the Japanese language track is a million times better than the American one.

CCS(I'm dead serious)

I liked Cardcaptor Sakura a lot, but the staggering amount of filler keeps it from busting into my all-time favorites list. Still, a very good series.

Actually, Adult Swim only had one edit in FLCL.

Really?!? Someone's been lying to me then....*shakes fist* I've never actually watched the AS version, was going on second-hand info from a friend. But yay if what you're saying is true.

Still, I've seen the English language version on my DVDs and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it pales in comparison to the Japanese version, lack of edits or not. And I don't mean that in the usual sarcastic anime fan way- how anyone could possibly prefer Haruka's English voice over her Japanese one is beyond me.

Lately, I've been watching the original Dragonball on YTV and enjoying it. It's better than I remember it being years ago. The martial arts tournament was pretty fun as is the underground treasure part of the show they're currently on.

I just watched Millenium Actress a little while ago. It was a very good movie and was from the same person who made Perfect Blue I believe. The animation was top notch.

It's true. AS even said so during their B and W cards intro. The only thing edited was the word "shit," in the last episode.

I don't watch a lot of anime, but my favourite one right now is called "Weiß Kreuz". It's about these four assassins, aaand I think it's pretty cool. The voice work is superb, y'know. Except the English version, which is just goofy... Omi sounds like he's hitting puberty constantly, but uh, whatever. Weiß is one of those pseudo-dramatic shows, but it's got a lot of humourous moments as well.

The other show I've been watching is "Rurouni Kenshin", but that's just 'cause I adore one of the bad guys. Eh.

Satoshi Kon. I like his work- he's a very good anime director. The fact that he hinted during a recent American anime magazine review (with 4 subscriptions, hell if I can remember which one- it was either Animerica or Anime Insider, though) that he would be trying his hand at science-fiction or fantasy next is very promising and exciting.

I met Kon at Big Apple Anime Fest in August- very nice guy who seemed to take the swarms of fanboys better than others. He was woefully overshadowed by Irie as far as the fanboy collective is concerned because of how popular RahXephon is right now, which is too bad considering how good Kon is.

I can't say I'm watching anything currently. Finished Gundam SEED, as well as the three MSG movies a while back.

Just got through with Angelic Layer (and though it's completely opposite from the stuff I usually watch) it's a good little show.

I'd like to start another series, but I'm not sure what at the moment.

If you want to IM me, I could give you some ideas. ("Voran Xias" is my AIM s/n.) Tried to IM you but you're offline.

I'd suggest some over here but in my experience it's always easier to just do it over AIM- because going back-and-forth on what you've seen and not seen can take forever. But yeah.

Obviously, though, I REALLY want to push X if you haven't seen it yet- it's absolutley incredible, in my opinion. The art, the story, the characters- all of it makes one fine show that's highly, highly reccomonded.

Currently watching: Nothing, actually. I ran out of money while I was watching Saber Marionette J, and I simply don't have the time or payola to keep going. It was okay, but was on a friend's reccomendation but my friend is also one of those guys who thinks the quality of an anime is directly proportional to the number of cute girls in it. I have higher standards.

All-time favorite: Cowboy Bebop. Never have I seen so much story told in a series where only four episodes have a sense of continuity. Second place is Vision of Escaflowne, which was beautiful but left me feeling a little lost from time to time.

Want To See: I keep meaning to see Sonic X, preferably in English since I'm an old school fan that used to watch the USA Sonic cartoons as a kid, but I never remember to set the VCR when Friday nights roll around.

I watch the stuff on Adult Swim, as I don't have the energy or the patience (or the money) to hunt down stuff outside of what I get for free on basic cable.

FLCL is fantastic, though.

BTW, is there any sort of resolution to Big O, for those who have seen all the episodes or read the manga? You KNOW Roger wants to fuck the robot.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

The world was revealed to be one big stage. Angel was seen sitting in front of a production room full of monitors crying at the end.

Has anyone out there ever watched either of the Tiger Mask series or the Giant Baba anime? I know it's super rare but the plot sound great to me. If they made something like that today I'd be buying that in a heartbeat.

Don't get me started on the ending of Big O.

What were you expecting?

I don't know what I was expecting. Regardless, I'm still a big fan of The Big O.

I'm currently watching the gungrave anime which is being fansubbed every week. Very slick and stylish accompanied by Tsuneo Imahori excellent score (my favorite outro ever).

Also re-downloading hight quality versions of the original macross series. Speaking of macross where the hell is the third macross zero OVA?

All time favorites:

Trigun- Hands down my favorite anime ever. Trigun, to me its just a perfect balance of guns, humor and morale. It has one of the deepest, coolest and funniest protaganists in anime, a great sound track (again credit goes to Tsuneo Imahori) and some truly touching scenes.

Macross plus (OVAs and movie)- The relationship between the characters is superb, backed up with lush visuals and Yoko Kanno’s sorcery to make it a fantastic drama.

Overrated:

Cowboy bebop- Seriously why does this series get so much love? I can’t stand Spike, Faye or Ed. None of the characters properly develop and the final two episodes are nothing short of laughable considering the whole series is just a bunch of filler (which is neither funny or exiting). Only thing that saves it is Yoko Kanno’s soundtrack with Tank being one of the best intro songs ever.

Also on a related note, I've recently downloaded the entire 28 volumes of the kenshin manga (translated) and have been reading through the Jinchu arc and I love it. Possibly even better than the Kyoto arc.

The movie has much more grain in the video but it Imo its better than the ovas.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

- Guld has a MUCH more incredible and intense fight with the ghost X-9.

- There is more footage in the ending showdown, making it more complete.

- Isamu doesnt go to rescue save Myung because he's having sex with Lucy during the fire scene

- The test at the end of Part 2 is replaced with the test from Part 1.

Some scenes are shifted around, which actually makes the movie easier to follow than the ovas. The ovas capture more the competition between Isamu and Guld where the movie captures the relationships between the characters.

Oh and Macross > Gundam

Macross features the love of music and romance set in a war enviroment while Gundam has political BS with some morals its a tough call to make.

I must have the Macross Plus Movie but it is hard to find in stores :(
