Oscar-winning actor Michael Caine has agreed to play the role of Bruce Wayne's trusted butler Alfred in Warner Bros.' new Batman movie.

The film, to be helmed by Christopher Nolan and being penned by David Goyer, is expected to start shooting next year for a 2005 release. Christian Bale has been cast in the title role.

Meanwhile, Caine is also expected to star in Castle Rock's sequel to the Sandra Bullock romantic comedy Miss Congeniality. Bullock committed to the sequel which she will also produce based on a Marc Lawrence-script. Warner Bros. and co-financier Village Roadshow Pictures have set a March start date.

No thanks. I want a NEW Batman franchise. It looks like they're on the right track.

I can't believe no one's mentioned the fact that Daniely Day-freakin'-Lewis is now rumored to have received the part of Rha's al-Ghul.

This movie hasn't even gone into full production yet, but already I dub it:

Best. Superhero. Movie. EVER.

I still think Alan Rickman would make for the best Ras Al Ghul

Him or Jeremy Irons, both have the look and the deep powerful voices to pull it off

The name Christopher Nolan must carry alot of weight with actors.

Well ok, it's not exactly hard to get Caine, as he's known to do some turkeys. But to get someone like Daniel Day Lewis to show interest in a Batman film, that says alot.

He could be a big fan of Nolan. Besides, Ras Al Ghul doesn't sound like a typical comic book villian. So it's not like we have to imagine him playing an over the top villian.

I'm actually happy that Warner has gone from "hot" actors to great character actors, but Michael Caine? As Alfred? Alfred had better have a meaty role to justify this, otherwise I don't see the point other than more stunt casting.

So anyways, count me as still skeptical about the whole thing, and as one of the masses that hopes Warner can prove me wrong.

If anyone doubts that DDL can play a great villan, watch Gangs of New York. Although I liked the pianist, I really believe Day- Lewis should have won the oscar this year

That's why I don't believe it. Daniel Day Lewis was retired in acting. Doing the Scorsese movie I could understand, it's friggen Scorsese. But doing a BATMAN movie is a bit different.

But to be fair, the Scorsese movie he came out of retirement for was worse then Bringing Out the Dead, and Batman is one of the most inconic fictional characters of the last half-century. He could be a fan (Though I can't imagine DDL liking comic books).

I already stated my opinion of Bale as Bats in the thread dedicated to that news item a while back. As for Caine... I'm cool with it.

They'll have to bit X2 for that honor, and that might be tough.

They probably want some "names" in the movie, and with Caine being kind of acclaimed lately [with the Quiet American] they probably figure that it'll bring in more people to see "a star studded cast." That said, I really hope that he gets a scene where he gets to kick some ass. Caine is a bad mofo! ;p

As much as I love it, I'd put Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, and Superman: The Movie ahead of X2. The Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan homage didn't sit well with me at all.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is better than Batman:MOTP, Superman and X2 put together.

Recognize bitch.

Don't they remember a movie similar to this one came out 14 years ago? Coincidently, it was called Batman.

My point is stop the remakes and have some originality!

but...it's not a remake.

That is unless you consider the Tim Burton Batman to be a remake of the 60's Batman movie.

I didn't say it wasn't. I just said I didn't like X2's homage to it.

X2 was the best of the modern superhero movies. The best of the Marvel films right now, I'd say.

Mask of the Phantasm owns it, however. Completely. In my opinion.

And if anyone ever remakes the 60's Batman movie, I will snap and go on a rampage.

X2 was cool

Daredevil was so-so

I might be the only person who liked The Hulk
