Special K 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2003 What are some bands that you lovem that other people hate? And you can sort of understand why. I love Ween, Primus, The rev Horton Heat, Bjork, Red Elvises. A couple friends of mine love ICP, but that's my own ccross to bear.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2003 Well, I love Prince, The Cure, The Pogues, Flogging Molly and Liz Phair. With the exception of one friend, everyone else I know can't stand any of the artists I've just mentioned. For some reason, my friends seem to love 50 Cent and Ja Rule. I'm pretty sure that they don't think Ja and 50 are talented, I don't think they know any better and are just going along with what all of the other kids are into these days. Guest macheteofodin Report post Posted December 13, 2003 When it comes to my friends, there isn't much I like that they don't. Jazz is probably the only thing. There is plenty they like that I don't. Sworn Enemy, David Bowie, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, and the various other assortments of artsy crap, boring "metal-core," nu metal and "bling bling." With other people I'd have to say ICP is my only weakness. People seem genuinely surprised when I mention I'm a Juggalo.
Anorak 0 Report post Posted December 14, 2003 Well, I love Prince, The Cure, The Pogues, Flogging Molly and Liz Phair. I don't think those artists particularly fit into that category as well as those Special K mentioned. Most people seem to pull a face at the mention of The Cure because of they recall that 'weird looking singer bloke' rather than any musical reasons. Silly but true. I can't see the appeal of a band like Primus but each to their own.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted December 14, 2003 I can't see the appeal of a band like Primus but each to their own. Not every band has to be serious, Les Claypool is one crazy and wild singer. Pork Soda is one of my favorite albums "My Name is Mud" "Mr Krinkle" "DMV" "Nature Boy"
godthedog 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2003 nothing wrong with a non-serious band in and of itself (see the title of this thread), but not being serious has nothing to do with automatically being entertaining. primus is kind of hit-or-miss in that department. 5_moves_of_doom 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2003 I've got one or two friends who actually like the Pixies, and zero for liking the Velvet Underground (though that's mostly a "The Velvet who?" thing. Prince and Bjork are two others, but the main one is Blondie (one or two girl friends like them, but that's it basically) along with pretty much every other post-punk/new wave band. Gang of Four, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Jam (though I don't like them too much...)... the list goes on and on. Actually, aside from a bunch of "EVERYONE likes them" bands like Led Zeppelin (and most people are on a "OH I LOVE THEM! STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN ROX AND THE YELLING IN THE IMMIGRANT SONG IS TIIIGHT!" basis for them, too), I'd say that pretty much none of my friends like most of the bands that I like. They're mostly all into metal/rap (my two least favorite genres, though I do like quite a few groups in both categories) or punk. Oh, and has anyone else had the problem of people dismissing legends (Miles Davis, Beehtoven, Elvis) as music that only parents can listen to? Seriously. Not every band has to be serious, Les Claypool is one crazy and wild singer. Pork Soda is one of my favorite albums "My Name is Mud" "Mr Krinkle" "DMV" "Nature Boy" "Mr. Krinkle" is one of the best vidoes I've ever seen. The first time I saw that was on Headbanger's ball when I was probably 12. That video creeped me the fuck out. Seeing Les dressed in a crushed velvet suit as a GIANT PIG playing upright bass freaked me out. Add in the circus freaks in the background and you've got the perfect nightmare for a small child. Red Baron 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2003 The only bands I think that I like that most people that don't like is, Tea Party, Alice In Chains, Motley Crue and Megadeth. Almost everyone I know loves Led Zeppelin and Nirvana, saying how great they were, or the best, or because of originality. Also a lot of Janis Jopilin love as well, which I can not stand
Guest Blas Report post Posted December 15, 2003 Shit. Tennessee Ernie Ford, The Osborne Brothers, Hank Williams and Hank Williams Jr, a bunch of old country. Most people I know dont like Down but I love the fuck out of NOLA.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted December 16, 2003 I think I might be distantly related to this guy^ The two biggest examples I can think of for me are Primus (which is almost my favorite band ever) and King Crimson (which is also almost my favorite band ever). I'd say metal in general is pretty much love it or hate it. There's those odd few that don't care about it one way or another, but mostly it's either "Hey, that kicks ass," or "I can't tell what he's saying. I have a headache." I'll kick his ass. Primus rocks it as well, though I can't relate to the hate, as most of my friends are into them. As for metal, I'd say I'm one of the rare "meh" people that you mentioned. Or perhaps it's just me reacting to the different types of metal. I <3 Black Sabbath and AC/DC as well as most of the other classics, and Faith No More too (assuming that they qualify as metal,) but once you get into all of the subgenres -- hardcore, deathcore, grindcore, thrash, black metal... I just get scared and run away. Cannibal Corpse fan I am not.

MrRant 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2003 Lately I've ran into a lot of backlash against Queen. Also I'll mention Creedence Clearwater Revivial and get a "Huh?" and then want to kill them.

Guest MissMattitude Report post Posted December 20, 2003 Nada Surf and The Dandy Warhols spring to mind. I hate people. That's probably one of the worst problems with modern people who have narrow-minded outlooks on music. "Mercury? Prince? Bowie?" Even if the last two aren't even gay, all I get is a "FAG." I mean, hell, 80% of Prince's lyrics revolve around fucking women in every way imaginable, but also, he's just damn good. Geh... and same with some bands like Blondie, or even the Pretenders on occassion. "Oh, that band's for girls." Some of you may think this one to be a little farefetched, but people have actually said that to me. God, some people just need to be dropped into a vat of acid or something. Seriously. King Kamala 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2003 Queen is the shit, almost all of their stuff is fucking great. I really mean almost everything even their synth pop days. In fact I'm listening to Radio Ga- Ga now.
Sonic Reducer 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2003 Oasis, Opeth, White Stripes, Jane's Addiction, Husker Du, Sigur Ros, Buzzcocks. I listen to everything. But Modest Mouse sucks.
5_moves_of_doom 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2003 Oasis, Opeth, White Stripes, Jane's Addiction, Husker Du, Sigur Ros, Buzzcocks. I listen to everything. But Modest Mouse sucks. Zen Arcade + Singles Going Steady + What's the Story (Morning Glory)? = Gold. I really don't get the White Stripes hate either. I swear to God, I've got this little indie-femenist-girl of a friend who LOOOVES all of those Hot Hot Heat and Yeah Yeah Yeah's bands, but doesn't like the White Stripes. I suppose they're just too commercial or something, but as much as I try to tell her that they're VERY similar to the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, she denies it. Also, she likes Modest Mouse, and I don't mind the band (two of their CD's are greatness, the rest are "eh",) but I could definitely see how one could find them annoying. Sonic Reducer 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2003 I tried getting into Modest Mouse this summer, and it just didn't work. Nobody else seems to like Prefuse 73, or even know who they are, either. They rock.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2003 I love me some Modest Mouse. The only bad thing they've ever put out was the half-assed EP in the wake of Moon and Antarctica. In an age where synthy disco-rock (!!! and the Rapture, most notably) and a pile of electroclash are becoming increasingly popular, I'm surprised that so few people seem to listen to classic, 80's-era Depeche Mode. Guest JebusNassedar Report post Posted December 23, 2003 I guess the only bands like that for me are Primus, dredg, and prolly The Streets. I say dredg because, being from Southern California, most people I know cant take how slow and technical it is. They want instant gratification, and it drives me bonkers. Ya know, I've tried telling people exactly what you said about Prnce and all they still say "But look at him. He's a fag." Nevermind the fact that the guy is a GENIUS and plays about 40 different instruments well. The stuff I hear about Blondie from the idiot kids these days is "Weren't they a Disco group?" Then I just walk away and hang my head.

Skywarp! 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2003 Some friends like and some hate: 311, Weezer, Presidents of the United States of America, The Hives, 2 Skinnee J's, System of a Down, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Strokes, there's a lot more but I'd really need to be in front of my collection to be exhaustive about it. But out of those I'd say none of these beat each other out to be the most loved, but the most hated are by far Foo Fighters.
