Best Gimmicks That Never Got Over

Recommended Posts

Guest champchavez

Curious who you guys think had/have the best gimmicks that for one reason or another never got over. I'll start:

Waylon Mercy-fabulous gimmick. Unfortunately Danny Spivey got injured.

Vampiro-again a fabulous gimmick. Unfortunately Vamp is a lazy worker and incredibly stupid.

Waylon Mercy-fabulous gimmick.

"Lives are gonna be, in Waylon Mercy's hands. You know what I mean?"

That's what I had in mind when I saw the title of the thread. I loved watching him do that deal where he shakes hands with everyone, southern gentlemanly like...then just snap and kill the guy.

I was also a big Too Much mark. Sure people didn't like them...but they didn't get enough hate to be on very often.

For me, Vampiro was just a ripoff of the Brood and to a greater extent 'Taker.

Berlyn was a great gimmick, but Alex Wright being a douchetard killed it out of the gate when Hacksaw totally no sold his ass in his debut match. It was an updating and edgier take on the foreign menace.

I always marked out for the Repo Man. I think he came off a bit too cartoony, but Darsow was able to play him to the hilt that way.

....with thoughts of wrestlecrap dancing in my head....

I would have to agree on Repo Man for sure.

Papa Shango was a great gimmick. He was around for a bit, but not long enough IMO. Heck I had nightmares of him.

REPO MAN was great . . . Damn shame they edited out the glass shattering at WMX7 and worse yet, he lasted about 3 seconds in the match. He should've repossessed Cornette's tennis racket on his way out. Then Cornette is all WTF and gets dumped. He then chases after Repo Man for the rest of the night. Kinda like the Hardcore Hijinx at WMX8.

"What's mine is mine, and what's yours is mine too!" Repo man fuckin ruled.

As far as gimmicks go I'd say

Borne Again (obviouslly)

3 Count

The Nutty Trio (Daffney, Crowbar, and David Flair)

and I though it really doesn't count, Positively Kanyon should have been around a lot longer. He was one of the few bright spots in WCW in 2000.

Oh and the Mean Street Posse too.

Mercy ruled!

So did Berlyn, but his ruling was somewhat less than the ruling displayed by Mercy...

Uh, BorneAgain...3Count was over. Not to the extent I wish they would have been (due to the Tank Abbott feud, mostly), but definitely over. 3Count was the highspot of 2000 WCW for me. Well, aside from Nash jobbing CLEAN to Booker T at Fall Brawl, and Hogan being bitched out on national PPV...

I liked Reverend D-Von. I think a fire and brimstone preacher could get over. It's an opportunity for a lot of high energy mic work and the gimmick lends itself to a lot of different move names and such.

I also think Berlyn could've worked if done right. The fact that they readily admitted he use to be Alex Wright was a good idea. I also liked the translator.

I'd have to go with the original Mankind charater, the childhood piano genius whose mother kept him locked in a basement his whole life. He was so sick and demented, Foley played it off awesomely. Fans just never got it though.

Umm, Ashley Hudson . . . he was an Aussie! Brilliant. Nothin better. Though I suspect his averageness, plus the fact he was in TNA for like a one time thing stopped that getting over.

I loved Positively Kanyon.

Running around and Diamond Cutting everyone. Hilarious.

I loved Kanyon, Alliance MVP

I also liked Shawn Stasiak's bumbling idiot act during the alliance where he would run into things.

I wish evil Doink was given more of a chance. He had so much mileage left that the face turn was way too hasty. Even turning him face wasn't so bad, but the character had ZERO evil tendencies. No mind games on his opponents other than having Dink jump on his opponent's belly. The evil laugh was gone, the facial expressions were jovial, it was a sour way to end the Doink gimmick.

BTW, how exactly did he turn face? I know Lawler was mad at him for losing to Hart at SummerSlam 1993, but what exactly turned him into a good guy?

Wasn't one time Angle or Rock was talking to Regal in his office then all of a sudden, he stops, backs away, and Staziak runs into the suit of armor.

Angle side stepping Staziak, causing him to run into the milk truck.

9/13/01 SD when Rock simply side steps him, tossing him over the top rope mid sentence, then continues like nothing happend.

I think we all know the best gimmick that Vince will never even give a chance to get over by being to small minded to see the genius and huge money making potential. Vince really should just go sign up CMLL legend...

Super Porky.

Just give him a chance Vince, just give him a chance.

The New Rockers -- no doubt.

The audience just didn't get that one either, although it's one of the best little parody bits the company has ever done. Al Snow as Leif Cassidy while Jim Ross talks about how they listened to the Bay City Rollers to prepare for the day's matches? Just great!

Is Alex Wright a real asshole or something backstage, cause Paul Roma also no sold him during a match. I've never heard anything like that about him though?
