Saw the end of Rick Martel vs Tito Santana from Saturday Night's Main Event. (I beleive their 2nd Saturday Night match) Pretty exciting end to what looked like an intense bout. Looking back, I loved Martel's arrogance at the end of the bout making like the match was nothing while at the same time you can tell how much the bout took out of him.

I've been watching the early WWF Attitude Era stuff, mostly Austin vs. McMahon stuff. I watched Wrestlemania XIV last week, and I've been watching both Austin vs. Dude Love matches from Unforgiven & Over the Edge.

 

On a side note, after just watching it... the Inferno match between Undertaker & Kane REALLY sucks bad. I never thought it was that bad. Punch-punch-big boot-rest-tease getting tossed in fire-punch-TOPE-drum over Paul Bearer-punch-Kane lit on fire. That might as well be the entire match.

DiBiase/Roberts from Wrestlemania 6... one of my favorite matches of all time, and prefaced by a ridiculously intense promo by Jake. carrying that kind of gravity while remaining so collected (especially for the time)... it gets me every time.

Chris Benoit vs Chris Jericho, Royal Rumble 2001. I love this match. The stiffness, the intensity, the innovative spots, everything about it. Take out slow climbing and it's ***** to me, with it, ****3/4.

Bas Rutten vs. Frank Shamrock

Bas Rutten vs. Masa Funaki

 

Both are fucking awesome. Bas/Frank has Frank acting like a total dick laughing at Bas hitting him on the ground while in a leg lock. Bas chuckling after Frank's "cover-up-then-hit" is hilarious. Good stuff all around.

 

Funaki/Bas is sweet. Funaki generally dominates on the ground, but when they're up Bas levels him with knees.

I've seen this but in highlight form on that tape where Bruce Beck and Ken Shamrock are commentating. It's not so good if you want to see complete matches but it's great for Ken using the "hockey pen" and explaining all the submission moves. Pancrase is my favourite form of shoot stlyle wrestling.

I believe Jericho had taken medication in the hospital for his broken arm as the result of a botched shooting star press he was practising which thinned out his blood causing it to flow even more.

Kawada vs. Kobashi =

10/93 is an excellent match. Nowhere near the same level as their MOTYC eariler in 93 during the Champion's Carnival, but it's still excellent.

 

The build was slow, but still great, foreshadowing some important spots in 12/93 tag match. But around the middle of the match, Kobashi and Kawada seemed to have some communication problems. Kobashi wanted to turn it up way too early, hitting his Moonsault finisher out of nowhere, and as result Kawada had too slow things back down and put the match back together.

 

Kobashi also gets a little goofy at the end, going overkill with the Backdrops, and working way too much desperation offense after the first Powerbomb. Kawada also uses way too many Backdrop Drivers, but unlike Steven Williams, he smartly gives Kobashi enough time to put them over.

 

Still, there's so many great things in here like Kawada's selling of the Sleeper that really make the match. I would put this match way ahead of their 95 TC draw, both of their 96 matches, and Williams/Kobashi from the same year.

I really enjoy Pancrase, but I'd say my favourite shootstyle promotion is UWF-i, thus far... I still haven't seen any RINGS (aside from Noguiera/Tamura). But that's generally because Albright fucking rocks the germans (!)

 

btw, I got 2 more Astroboy tapes - including the first episode... talk about getting hit with a bagfull of nostalgia.

Then I have five complete Tsuruta/Tenryu matches on that same tape. I've been dying to see 6/5/89.

Albright rocks with the dragons as well! I was just watching Takada vs Tenyru from 9/96? rescently which was a swell matchup. They actually showed a couple of UWFI shows on TSN not too long ago.

Astroboy Spoilers

In the Canadian or American version the 2nd episode is The Robot Circus. In the original it's actually the 3rd with the 2nd episode being titled Astroboy vs Atlas. I believe the version over here combined the first two episodes into one. I mention this because the 2nd original episode is crucial to the Astroboy universe. It explains how Skunk corrupts Atlas as a youngster which helps show how he evenually turns out the way he does. They also show how the relationship between Guiss, Skunk a younger Livian and Atlas works. Guiss is abusive to both to Atlas and Livian which ends up with Guiss killing Livian for essentially nothing and sending Atlas over the edge. Livian had been the good influence on Atlas and his most true friend. It was because of her that Atlas couldn't finish off Astro at the bottom of the sea because of the sees of goodness she had planted in Atlas' head. Back on topic, Atlas chases after Guiss is in a car in an awesome scence sending Guiss over the cliff. Afterwards, he goes back to his home and mourns over Livian who is broken into tiny pieces. Than, he commits suicide? That was my interpertation of it but I'm not sure if he did or just rebuilt himself as we see in the episode when Atlas steal Astro's parents he's much bigger and has been rebuilt but I don't think they ever tell you who did it. Perhaps my favourite episode of the whole series. Awesomely done.   I don't know if they talk about this in the english versions but Atlas has something called the omega factor? implanted in him which helps influence him. I can't go back to check because I lent my Astro away but I think that's what it is. They also show how the Astro plans were "stolen" so Atlas could be made. Nicely done too btw.   To the best of my memory, the music is done better in the original version although the starting is pratically identical. The one good thing I thought the English version did was have that game at the end where you have to guess what Astro lied about in his report to the computer ?. Although Astro techinically can't lie, I thought it was a good idea. After rewatching some of the series, I can't really think of another animation series that I've seen which is better overall.
