The REAL Story On Kurt Angle's Neck

Recommended Posts

Recent reports suggesting that Kurt Angle will never again be able to compete full time in WWE are false, the Olympic gold medalist told WWE.com on Monday.

“That’s not even close,” Angle said in a phone interview. “I don’t know where they came up with that. I’m hoping to be back on a full schedule in mid-January. I don’t know where that came from, but that’s not in the plans. I’m coming back full-schedule. I already talked to J.R. (Jim Ross) and Johnny (Laurinaitis, of WWE’s Talent Relations Department). So that’s all rumors.”

Angle said he’s much improved since having surgery on Nov. 18 to remove bone spurs in his spine, although he said it took him much longer to recover compared to his first surgical procedure, just after WrestleMania XIX in March, with his Pittsburgh-based surgeon, Dr. Hae-Dong Jho. Angle said he regained full strength just four days after the first surgery, whereas it has taken his body about six weeks this time. “But it wasn’t even that bad,” Angle said. “It was 95 percent strength. I just wanted to be 100 percent.”

The 1996 freestyle wrestling gold medalist added, “I’m feeling really good. Dr. Jho doesn’t want to release me for a couple more weeks. He wants to be more safe than sorry, so he’s going to let my neck heal a couple of more weeks.”

The infuriating blood clot on Angle’s neck that swelled to the size of a large orange has finally gone away. It got so bad that it started affecting Angle’s breathing, and he was taken to an emergency room by his wife, Karen. Physicians at the E.R. didn’t want to drain the clot for fear it would become infected; essentially, they just told him to be patient and it would go away, and they sent him home. About four days later, it started to subside, and now, it’s finally disappeared. Angle said the clot probably developed because he was overly active in the days following his surgery – playing with his daughter, he joked.

Although Angle was not able to be a part of Thursday’s SmackDown! special from Baghdad, he did recently tour the Middle East on a USO (United Service Organization) trip with actor/comedian Robin Williams, NASCAR driver Mike Wallace and Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Angle spent a week there – visiting Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan and other places – hanging out with troops on 19 bases, often traveling five hours to get to them. He would start at 7:30 in the morning and continue each night until 11.

“But it was well worth it,” Angle said. “I’m very privileged to be able to do it. I probably would have done it even if I was still wrestling. I probably would have just done the (SmackDown!) show right after it. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Angle said that at one point he was literally 100 feet from prison where forces were keeping Saddam Hussein; Angle was actually in the area when Saddam was captured, so he got to see the troops’ morale improve first-hand. It no doubt helped that Williams was on the tour. Angle called Williams “definitely the funniest guy I’ve ever met.”

He said of the “Patch Adams” and “Mrs. Doubtfire” star, “He’s just a really giving, caring person. He went over there not to promote anything, but just to be there for the soldiers. … He was over there to show his appreciation for the soldiers, nothing more, nothing less.”

The former WWE Champion did get home in time to celebrate Christmas with his wife and 1-year-old daughter, Kyra. Angle said his wife must be a mind-reader because she got her husband exactly what he needed – including a neck massager. Meanwhile, the Angle family bought baby Kyra with everything she would ever need or want.

“My daughter got a lot of things,” Angle said with a chuckle. “I was even surprised because Christmas morning we must’ve opened her presents for two hours.”

...FINALLY I learn what the name of Kurt and Karen's daughter is.

It's good news, at least.

How so?

He's coming back and risking his health to do NOTHING worthwhile.

This is not a rant on how he's poorly used. There is simply nothing for him to do right now.

Who would he feud with?

It's better for him to come back as a manager or announcer or something.

It's good for the reason because he's doing what he loves to do...be an active wrestler.

Would you rather him retire and be unhappy that he had to so early, or continue wrestling and be happy?

I'd rather him not get hurt.

He's done everything there is to do anyway.

What is he going to do when he comes back and is it worse the ritckth?

Maybe he doesn't care about his position on the card and things like that, and just wants to, you know, entertain in his own unique way?

Not all wrestlers are like HHH and concerned about their poistion on the card. He just wants to be on the show.

If he was really going to go away, he could at least job clean or submit for someone in the midcard.

One more Benoit/Angle match where Benoit actually wins clean could do wonders.

I don't think a win over Angle would do that much for Benoit. Angle was never exactly THAT far above Benoit on the card that a win over Kurt would be such a huge feat. They were always more or less equals who traded wins.

Kurt Angle could be feuding with GOD (and I mean God, not Benoit) and you'd still bitch about Angle being underused.

I'm just saying it woul be a shame for him to come back, be totally wthout direction (Because the eveone else is busy) and break his neck doing that.

I personally think Kurt has done enough that he can retire and say he had a good little career. Why risk coming back to do nothing and get hurt?

Because he wants the title one more time. Or at least that's what I read in the new SD magazine today. ;)

Kurts got a wife and kid, if he knew that going back into the ring again could cause his neck to break down once and for all then for the good of his family he'd just stop wrestling... wouldn't he?

I'll disagree with you because I can't believe Kurt (or anyone else for that matter) would be so stupid. Hes made his niche, hes gonna be remembered long after he retires - if he was one bad suplex away from permenant injury I simply can't believe he would continue.

Or maybe Anglesaults right and Kurts gonna be Dynamite Kid 2K3. :(

Anglesault is definitely right. (Case in Point) Wasn't he risking permanent injury at WM XIX?

Angle wouldn't return if he was at risk of a severe injury. I'm wondering where the sheets got the info that he was done from.

I hope to God he knows what he's doing because I don't want us to have another Droz. He has his whole life ahead of him. I have nothing but respect for the man, but I think he's crossing the threshold between brave and crazy.

And do it for Jericho, too. He still needs that big win. Elevate them. blahdablahda.

You know what, Anglesault?

You're like one of those people who send TV doctors letters asking about various medical problems, or send them warnings that they're about to get killed by another character. You're adoration of Angle goes beyond wrestling, to the point where you DONT want to see him on television again. Check into that.

I don't want him to wrestle again.

And the doctors are never in any real danger. Kurt is
