spiny norman 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 Yesterday: I have a pretty good collection of Springsteen albums (he or The Beatles would have the more albums, depending on what I most recently bought), and this is definitely one of the best. Amazingly mellow, just generally a great album. Today: As the person behind the counter was snickering at me, I felt the need to prove my manhood so also got with it because they were playing their live album and this shop has a special deal that in the duration of them playing an artist's specific album you can get anything of their's for half price. Anyway, all three are incredibly worthwhile albums.
Cuban Linx 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2004 Guns N' Roses' Appetite for Destruction and Redman's Whut? Thee Album, with only a lack of funds preventing Sepultura's Chaos A.D. from joining them.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted August 2, 2004 Well, I got Miss Machine, and everything I want to say about it was already said by this guy. Just absolutely in-fucking-credible. Easily their best album to date, and it gives me the vapors to think of the excellence they'll be bringing forth after this. I also bought The Velvet Underground and Nico, which I am not yet thrilled with. "Heroin" is a great song. That's either the start of them growing on me, or an exception to the rule. I'll find out. I meant to get White Light/White Heat first, but this was in front of me, and it was ten bucks new, so hey.. Did I make a greivous error in judgment getting this first? Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2004 VU & Nico is their best album, so I don't think it's a mistake. But then maybe WL/WH is more your speed, anyway.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted August 2, 2004 Seriously? I'm listening to the first two tracks, and I'm going..ok, I didn't get through Femme Fatale, Venus in Furs was good, and Heroin's the only other track I remember. I've only listened to it once so far, though.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2004 The first album is weird, fucked-up pop-and-rock majesty. White Light/White Heat is nutbag shit with weird spoken word on "The Gift," and the infamous "Sister Ray." I agree that the first is their best album and the best place to start if you're after the whole catalog. And "Black Angel's Death Song" is awesomely odd no matter what you like. But if it's VU at their most extreme that you want, it would be White Light/White Heat.

godthedog 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2004 sleeve is in pretty good condition, with that stupid promotional stamp on it. the vinyl itself is flawless; absolutely no flaws whatsoever in the grooves, and it even looks all shiny and new.

ArkhamGlobe 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2004 Today I picked up a double disc live album with Can. It was a bit pricey, but since it features some stuff that's apparently never previously released I figured it was worth it. I haven't had the chance to listen to it yet, but I'm fairly psyched. 5_moves_of_doom 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2004 (edited) Copy/pasted from my "What Are You Listening to Right Now..." post... I meant to post in here, pretty much. "Oh, and I've also been listening to Nico's first solo album... (Great stuff... a few songs go on a bit too long, but usually it's appropriate, and overall this is one of the most sad, melancholy records I've ever heard, while still somehow uplifting and warm at times. Hrmph.) ...Beck's Mutations... (I'd only heard his first two records and was under the impression that Beck could do no wrong. Well, he can. This is decent, if not good, but just not up to par with Odelay, and especially Mellow Gold, which I enjoy slightly more.) ...the Ugly Cassanova album... (Great stuff... can't believe I didn't discover this earlier... the only problem is that most of the tracks sound more like soundscapes than actual songs, but for some reason, it feels like that's the way it should be, and I quite like it.) ...and finally, The Madcap Laughs by Syd Barret. (Songs are hit and miss, but overall it's a great documentation of Syd's downward spiral into madness. It's especially haunting because a lot of the time, it's not Syd just going crazy in your face in any way whatsoever. A lot of the tracks are quite sad, because they seem normal enough, and you can tell that Syd's just trying to write some normal, harmless pop songs, but you can always hear the underlying madness if you listen close enough. That's what I like the most about this record -- it's not obvious for the most part. You really have to listen, but once your in Syd's world and are totally engrossed in the album, it's a thouroughly interesting and sad journey.)" Also, I picked up Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music" yesterday. Eek. How soothing. Edited August 7, 2004 by 5_moves_of_doom

Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2004 Minor spree: a used copy of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs Fever to Tell (go $5), the Cure's Disintegration, M83's Dead Cities, Red Seas, & Lost Ghosts, and, stunningly, Sam Cooke's Live at the Harlem Square Club. One of the best live albums I've ever heard, something I've been looking for for a year, and used for $8. Un-credible.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 I saw that Cooke album at a pawn shop one day when I was FLAT BROKE. I went in the very next day with the $4 I needed to buy the album, and it was GONE. I should have stolen it, as it's fucking incredible.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 It's funny; I downloaded it about two years ago. Love it. I was finally just going to order it before I headed back up to school, but I ran into it today. Is it my favorite live album? Might be. Transforms his normal work into an entirely different beast.
