Spaceman Spiff Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 Ooh, tough choice. I picked GI Joe, but just barely over Transformers.
EricMM Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 Samurai Jack DESTROYS all these other shows in artwork alone. For pure action, 80's "action" cartoons are a joke. Samurai Jack was MADE in response to so-called action cartoons' total lack of direction and creativity in their action sequences. I remember a few *FEW* good sequences of action in the old ninja turtles, but GI Joe? Thundercats?? Come on.
razazteca Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 Batman TAS has the best artwork. I think the 80s cartoons were made for everybody 12 and younger while recent new series are for the demographic of 12+ and older. Samuria Jack has some dvds in the cheap bin at Walmart.
Guest Askewniverse Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 This is just my opinion, but here's a partial list of the shows that I'd put before KP: Clerks Family Guy The Simpsons This looks to be about action oriented animated series. Those three don't fit. The shows had to be at least somewhat action oriented. That's why the Simpsons and the Family Guy aren't in. I apolagize profusely for the Ghostbusters error. Fair enough. I didn't even realize the action-oriented theme until it was mentioned. The topic said "Favorite Animation Show," so I figured that it covered all sub-genres.

Kurosawa, Aliens, ZELDA!!, old Jackie Chan, Voltron, old Atari? games like International Karate, Star Wars, the anime charactor Lupin .... The list just goes on and on I watched "Couple on a train" about a couple of weeks ago. One of the best 30 minutes I've ever spent watching TV. I can't say enough good things about this show
DangerousDamon Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 I can't vote on this. I love ALL of those shows.
Guest The Ohtani of Time Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 By the power of Greyskull, He-Man all the way. Astroboy beats them all though
Ravenbomb Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 I like the way X-Men made you have to watch every episode, since for the most part they all kindof flowed together. Gargoyles is a fairly close second, but they never stuck with anything. They'd have a big change and then next season they'd have some big backstory and undo that change. Example: "The girl Gargoyle is dead!" "But wait! The thing that killed her is actually linked to this powerful magician that gave her special powers 10000 years ago, and that powerful magician is still alive. He'll show up unnanounced and make her alive again. She'll hate you, but she'll leave for a while so it doesn't matter." "Oh, okay."
Spaceman Spiff Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 Sure, the 1980's cartoons were basically 1/2 hour commercials, but there's people (like me) who tuned in to these when they 1st aired (yeah, we're old). These shows were parts of our youth, which is why I'd choose GI Joe or Transformers over any of these other choices (most of which I've never watched).

The Amazing Rando Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 I *MARK THE FUCK OUT* for M.A.S.K. Stilleto...ON~!
EricMM Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 Zsasz in terms of Action, you've got to give the win to Jack. I mean I will be the first to be proud of the fact that I used to watch Batman every damn afternoon when I was in 6th grade. It had great music and characters. And it did tell a good story. And yet. In terms of action, most of the "fights" were over in 10 seconds or yet. I'm just saying in terms of well directed and creative action sequences Jack is on top. Just watch Jack vs. the Zombies and doubt no more. Also I feel that The Birth of Evil is like the greatest FULL hour of TV.
Masked Man of Mystery Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 I voted for Spiderman myself. He's just always been my favorite superhero. I personallyt can't believe the old Zelda show hasn't gotten any love. They could put the whole thing on one DVD, and I'd happily buy it. The two Zelda shows on the Mario DVD were the primary reason I gfot it(beside sheer nostalgia)
Guest Mosaicv2 Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 i dont care any of you say... Rocko's Modern Life rulz all!!
AlwaysPissedOff Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 (edited) This list is EVIL... I've watched every show on this poll and love them all(yes, even KP because I'm a huge Ron fan). If I had to narrow it down to 3 possible choices, it'd be Batman, SJ, and Gargoyles. Ah fuck it, I'll go with Bats. Minor sidenote: Maybe I'm just quirky like that, but I prefer X-Men: Evolution to the 90's show(don't get me wrong, the FOX show was *very* good, but it just got amazingly tedious after they went to the Savage Land while Evo started off shaky and then got better and better til the end of the series). Also, I'm all for an anime poll, that should be a good debate... heh. Edited January 25, 2004 by AlwaysPissedOff

I'm one of the biggest supporters of Batman TAS but for me Samurai Jack's overtaken it. They seemingly made this show for me as I've lost count on how many times I've marked out for it. They've taken what's cool and just ran with it. The long distances of time without words being spoken, the numerous tributes to everything, the Kurosawa/anime influence, the action sequences, the beautiful scenery, the sense of adventure -- It all adds up to one of my favourite shows of all time. Up here in Canada though, they haven't shown all the episodes. I'm getting a little scared.
razazteca Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 The Tick is better than half of the poll.
Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 Gargoyles got fucked in the ass in this poll.

Use Your Illusion Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 You sum bitch. Where are the Ninja Turtles? Sorry but I could only pick 10. I know TMNT has its following but I didn't think it was strong enough to possably win so I left it out. I'd imagine it would get votes alone for the starting though. Nobody can resist singing that starting song! Um....WHAT? The TMNT franchise alone generated at least twice as much money as all of those cartoons COMBINED. The only thing that could knock the Turtles off their pedestal were the Power Rangers. I know it's not an animation, but GREEN RANGER LOVE PEOPLE??!? Ahem. UYI
starvenger Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 My top 5 of the choices available: Transformers G1 Batman: TAS G.I. Joe Thundercats X-Men I know it's not an animation, but GREEN RANGER LOVE PEOPLE??!? The role of the Green Ranger hasn't been the same since Adam passed the torch. Tommy was definitely the best Green Ranger, but Adam wasn't exactly chopped liver either.
The Ghost of bps21 Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 I picked Transformers. Batman was a little after my cartoon watching days...so I've only caught a few.
MarvinisaLunatic Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 I never liked "Action" cartoons although I did watch TMNT, probably because that was the in thing at the time.
Mrnoitaull Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 Batman: TAS, mixed great artwork with some fabulous stories. I'd say that's what Samurai Jack does better than all .
godthedog Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 The Tick is better than half of the poll. SPOON! of the choices, i say batman. it's the only retro cartoon i marked out for as a kid and can still appreciate today on its own terms (i.e., story and such, not just "oh i remember that that's awesome!"). i LIKE batman for not having lots of fights, they tried very hard to actually build suspense and create real characters (not just gimmicks) & get you into the choices they make and the situations they're placed in. remarkably well-constructed stuff. i've only seen a couple 'samurai jack' episodes & enjoyed them a lot, but only for the coolness of the animation & how well the action flowed together. i wasn't feeling any of the deeper human drama stuff that batman did so well. there could very well be stuff like that in the series, but i haven't been exposed to it. but raz speaks the truth and the tick owns all.
HarleyQuinn Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 Zsasz in terms of Action, you've got to give the win to Jack. In terms of action, most of the "fights" were over in 10 seconds or yet. I'll give the advantage of action to Jack although I always felt that Batman offered a deeper story and that the "fights" were just background to the relationships between the characters and the overall character development in general.
Ravenbomb Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 I think Batman Beyond should get a menition. For "Return of the Joker' if nothing else.
EricMM Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 I'll give the advantage of action to Jack although I always felt that Batman offered a deeper story and that the "fights" were just background to the relationships between the characters and the overall character development in general. I will totally TOTALLY give you that point, which is why I don't consider B:TAS to be a very good action cartoon. It is basically a dramatic series. The same could be said about almost all the other shows in the poll. Genndy Tartakofsky is just a genius. Even Dexter's Lab and the Powerpuff girls have better action than GI Joe or the Transformers.
Use Your Illusion Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I know it's not an animation, but GREEN RANGER LOVE PEOPLE??!? The role of the Green Ranger hasn't been the same since Adam passed the torch. Tommy was definitely the best Green Ranger, but Adam wasn't exactly chopped liver either. I was actually referring to the *original* Green Ranger storyline, featuring Tommy and Rita Repulsa. That whole 5 or so part episode was THE SHIT. I stopped watching after Tommy became the White Ranger, so I've no clue as to what happend to everyone else or who is what anymore. UYI
Sass Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 Best Batman: TAS fight: Batman vs. Bane. "SCREAM MY NAME!!!!!" - Bane "Never..." - Batman (in the comic he said "Go back to Hell") When Bane picked up Bats and was ready to break him over his knee, I honestly thought that FOX was going to pull the trigger and let Bane do it... I also marked out when Bats pulled off 2, count'em 2, hurricanrana's on Bane (with Bane blocking the 3rd). I won't dispute Samurai Jack having the better fights out of the cartoon choices given in this pole. I have only seen a couple SJ episodes but I enjoyed them.
