Zack Malibu 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 WWE is planning to have a ten man cruiserweight Battle Royal at WrestleMania XX. The plan is to have the Battle Royal be a pin-fall one and not over the top, so that the cruiserweights aren't confined. The participants would include Rey Mysterio, Tajiri, Chavo Guerrero, Nunzio, Kidman, Akio, Jamie Noble, and three others. One rumor has Dean Malenko coming out of retirement for one night only to participate in the match. Of course, that is just a rumor at this point. Credit: Wrestling Observer Newsletter I'm a big fan of Dean, and I think it'll be great to see him in action. I don't like the battle royal gimmick and would rather he have a singles program to build to, but I'll take what I can get. Match sounds interesting at least. Guest ManKinnd Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Now that I know this is pinfall, this is an AWESOME way to get the cruisers on Mania.
cawthon777 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Why is it being called a battle royal at all if pinfalls count? Just call it an elimination match. One of WCW's last solid matches was the cruiserweight elimination match from SuperBrawl Revenge, which Shane Helms won. Hopefully the WWE can put on something similar if not better. Open the Muggy Gate 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 If it was over the top, it would suck. Now we might get some actual good cruiserweight action and MALENKO~! That would be sweet. I call it now that Rey will win the match.
Michrome 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Why 411 twists news I'll never know. The observer clearly said there is very, very little chance of Malenko coming back.
Youth N Asia 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Drat...if this happens I can no longer claim to be in attendance for his last bout (Pillman 01)...but then again, I'd like to see him again.
Guest JumpinJackFlash Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Weird question, but does anyone know why Dean Malenko would want to be in a Golden Corral in Virginia Beach, VA? My friend told me he saw someone who looked just like him, if not Malenko himself.
David Blazenwing 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Three left? If Ultimo Dragon is left out, I'll be pissed. Wait... is he even in WWE anymore? Ah well... odds are Spike Dudley will be one of the three, if the rumors of his moving to SmackDown! are confirmed.
cynicalprofit 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 I doubt it will be that good of a match just cause well 15 cruisers, all wrestling wwe style, doesnt sound good. Maybe a 4 way with Dean, Rey, Tajiri(sp), and Hurricane or Knoble.
Guest Askewniverse Report post Posted January 27, 2004 WCW had a pretty good "Cruiserweight Countdown" match on one of the last episodes of Thunder. Maybe they'll do that instead of a battle royal.

Maybe a 4 way with Dean, Rey, Tajiri(sp), and Hurricane or Knoble. Not to start an argument, but Ultimo dragon is WAY better than Noble and Hurricane. Noble barely wrestles like a C.W. anymore and Hurricane is like an honorary hardy boy that acts like a super hero.
Steviekick 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Hurricane is like an honorary hardy boy that acts like a super hero. It's funny cause it's true. Hurricane really doesn't wrestle like the other cruisers.

Guest Choken One Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Only Mysterio works a style anywhere similar to what WCW did... I'm guessing the match will be Mysterio as champion against Tajiri, Nunzio, Akio, Moore, Kidman, London, Funaki, Dragon and Chavo.

Just lose Kidman & Nunzio quick in eliminations for being the least liked/CW style. London/Rey/Ultimo/Tajiri final 4 could own if done right.

Plus his start in WWF he was pullnig out good CW matches with TAKA. I mean L-HW.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted January 27, 2004 No One ever said he does since Nunzio, Kidman, Tajiri don't either... Funaki is just a another body that works in the "weight" limit...
pochorenella 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Sounds very interesting, for sure. But I'm having a little trouble figuring out the concept of a Battle Royal with pinfalls. 10 man elimination match sounds sweet. At least a somewhat decent way to showcase some of the cruisers at WMXX.
Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 No One ever said he does since Nunzio, Kidman, Tajiri don't either... Funaki is just a another body that works in the "weight" limit... Well, BBCW said eliminate Nunzio & Kidman early since they are the least liked/least CW-like. Funaki doesn't do anything remotely "cruiser" save for a tornado DDT every now & then. Guest Jimbo Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Um what is the "cruiser" style anyway? Cruiser belts weren't made for people who fly around the ring, rather it was made for the light/junior/cruiser weights of feds who couldn't compete size-wise with the Lesnars of the world. WCW REALLY missed on that concept then cause 90%+ of their CW champs were high flyers. Of course, no one gave a rats ass about them because they weren't named Hogan, Nash, Hall, Savage etc. etc.
Guest Jimbo Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Well yeah, that's because that's how most of the little guy's in wrestling compete...it's going to be hard for a guy like REy Mysterio to get over with the crowd if the whole match is around him trying to pick up Mark Henry. But still, I doubt the intention of the belts was to just have a random belt for people who could do nifty flying moves. Sean O'Haire and 2 Cold Scorpio were pretty agile, but they weren't cruisers by any means, were they?
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted January 27, 2004 I hold Malenko in a higher steem than Chris Benoit, so you could imagine my feelings. In fact, I was a fan of Dean Malenko's far before Eddie Guerrero. Weird.
Guest Goodear Report post Posted January 27, 2004 WCW REALLY missed on that concept then cause 90%+ of their CW champs were high flyers. Not as many as you think... Malenko - No Rey - Yes Ultimo - Kind of Jericho - No Eddie - Not so much Kidman - Yes Juventud - Yes So its about 50/50.
deancoles 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 I'd say Eddie was more of a high flyer than Kidman.
Guest hunger4unger Report post Posted January 27, 2004 I'm not too excited about this. Whilst I respect Dean Malenko's talent and do regard him as a fantastic worker, he was never over above midcard level and not even that in WWE. I don't see a reason to include him at Mania. Jericho back in his early days, ditto Guerrero. Definitly Dragon (the guy who invented the Asai Moonsault? come on...). Kidman is barely on the list. Juvi yup, Rey yup. Malenko I agree, was more of a mat based wrestler.
