Parent body-slams ref at high school basketball game

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A parent body-slammed a high school referee after he ordered the man's wife out of the gym for allegedly yelling obscenities during a basketball game.

The referee, Ronald Bell, 57, was treated at a hospital for a concussion and released after the attack Friday night.

Peter J. Dukovich, 47, was charged with simple assault, assault on a sports official and disorderly conduct. His wife, RaeLynn, who claimed the ref was making bad calls, was cited for disorderly conduct.

After Bell asked security to escort the woman out of the gym, "her husband came down onto the court, picked up the official, threw him on the ground with his back striking first and then his head hit the floor," West Deer Township police Chief Jon Lape said.

Officials say the rivalry between suburban Deer Lakes and Hampton high schools prompted administrators to allow only parents and grandparents to attend the game.

"We have parents who are supposed to be role models but instead we have problems occurring with parents fighting," Lape said.

Dukovich declined to comment Monday.

If it was me I would have hit the ref with a steel chair and then give him a Kanyon Cutter. BANG. ;)

While I'm all for a random Kanyon Cutter, why is it that parents who's kids are involved in team sports seem to be the biggest assholes? Are they pushing the kids for past glorys they were too pathetic not to get themselves?

And as long as we're taking poses...I would have ran around the ref in circles barking like Rick Steiner after slamming him.

I should have one of my ref friends let me assualt them during a game... just come down...get in his face, then kinda act his friend...then turn on him, boot to the stomach...then a piledriver (a safe one) right into the floor and have him sell it like his neck is broken. Then they can haul me off in handcuffs while I give the middle finger salute behind my back.

On the bright side, if the refs are scared now, their kid will probably never be called for so much as travelling again.

Well...they've stopped calling it in the NBA, might as well do the same at all levels.

Traveling? In high school?

In what state?

Traveling hasn't been called since 1993.

Yeah I think that's what is it. I remember watching a report and it talked how the kids that take sports way to hard are because their parents keep on pushing them to hard. In other words the parents are living thru the kids just like you said.

Speaking of which. Does anyone remember this kids talent show on Fox, I think it was. Anyways, after the judging results they would show the reactions of the parents and they would be PISSED. At the judges, at their kids, whoever. And just watching the way they would talk to their kids afterwards made me think of two things. Either A) those kids are beat by their folks or B) those kids are going to have practice a shitload to make up for their "failure".

I heard about this today, and all I have to say is:

HAMPTON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1994 -- GO TALBOTS!!!

Interesting, back in my day Deer Lakes and Hampton wasn't much of a rivalry -- We were AAA while they were AA. Richland seemed to be more of our "natural" rivals (even though they were AA, too, at the time of my high schooling). There was tension between the two districts though because Hampton was more upper-class than the West Deer area.

I have no idea who this guy was (nobody in the grades above and below me had that last name) and I hope he gets sued for every penny he's got. This was completely inexcusable, and upon reflecting back I seem to remember Hampton parents being very supportive of their teams without having to act like assholes.

I used to play soccer (not for the school) at Hampton and it was funny because whenever we went to play an away game at some place our parents ALWAYS outnumbered the home team's crowd. I'm genuinely surprised that this event took place...

Agreed. Send him to JV.

Speaking of JV, the old JV men’s basketball coach was also one of Hampton Middle School’s eighth-grade science teachers, Mr. Kuniak. He was one of those “cool” teachers, but I hated him. He sent out these mid-quarter “progress reports” that he called “green sheets” that we had to have our parents sign each grading period. Seeing how I always failed his class, I really didn’t care if I turned mine in or not. After a few weeks of him bothering me about it I finally forged my mom’s signature and turned it into him. Problem was I forgot to erase what I had written on there before, which was “Get a woman faggot.” I realized I forgot to erase this while HANDING IT TO HIM and tried to take it away. It didn’t work. He read it, asked if this was my handwriting and then, after I said yes, simply said, “erase this it’s unacceptable.” My lab partner was in tears from laughing so hard once he saw what I had written on my “green sheet.”

How did I ever pass eighth grade?...

I think he should start riding the Dukovich Express to campaign for a title shot.

Sorry, that was lame, and even I know it.

I'd have gone for a kneedrop off the high benches, provided there was a part of them not touching a wall or facing the center area.

If the parent had hit the Legdrop, would that have been Assault with intent?

and a bodyslam for a travelling call... I bet if it would have been an arguement over a technical, the northern lights bomb would have got hauled out
