Guest wrestlingbs Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 On AMC tonight they were showing wrestling's own Rowdy Roddy Piper in They Live. Having never seen the movie, I found it to be corny, badly acted, and awesome! Piper was the man when it came to the stupid action hero, second only to Bruce Campbell. It's sad seeing how he deteriorated to the condition he's in today. He could have be a great B-movie actor, if anything. Anyway, what are your thoughts on the movie? Thought the 15 minute fight scene kicked ass (the one that was aped in South Park)? Thought the aliens looked like retarded zombies?
Guest JMA Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 I also saw the movie for the first time. I didn't, however, find it campy, corny, or badly acted, though. Maybe I just have lower standards. Eh, whatever. The Bruce Campbell comparison is right on the money, though. Every time Piper was on the screen I thought of Campbell. Especially with the one-liners.
Guest cobainwasmurdered Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 i love that movie. I never really minded anything Piper was in in fact. The episode of Highlander he was in was pretty decent too
Guest wildpegasus Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 One of the best fight scenes ever in a movie.
Guest OctoberBlood Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 They Live friggin' rules, thank you.
Shanghai Kid Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 One of the best B-movies ever. Roddy Piper was a kickass hero in the movie, and that fight scene was hilarious. The ending didn't really do much for me though.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 It's a great movie. One of Carpenter's best - for cheap cheese, I like it better than his Kurt Russell movies. The first time I saw the fight scene, I couldn't stop laughing for its entirety. It's perfect.
razazteca Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 If you like Roddy Piper movies then you must look for Hell Comes to Frog Town its a mad max type of movie.

Youth N Asia Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 For a movie you can just put in the VCR and not have to put too much thought to, it's great. Classic fight scene and great one-liners.

WrestlingDeacon Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 A hilarious Piper movie to check out is Immortal Combat with Sonny Chiba. One of Piper's best movie's is Jungleground. It's surpringly good. They Live is totally awesome. I've been meaning to pickup the DVD, but I hope they release a deluxe edition which includes the Piper and Carpenter commentary that's on the region 2 disc.

Yeah, They Live and The Thing are probably my two favorites of his. Halloween, of course, has its charms as well. I'd put them a good step above the other two.
Youth N Asia Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 I'm pretty sure the DVD is unavailable now, least I think so.
MrRant Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 Big Trouble in Little China ownz. Japanese guy blowing up? Greatness. Raiden before Raiden? Gold. That is all.
Shanghai Kid Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 I've been holding out on getting They Live on DVD because I know I soon as I get it their going to reveal plans to release a special edition with the commentary and the other stuff that the Region 2 version has.
Guest wrestlingbs Posted February 15, 2004 Report Posted February 15, 2004 I just noticed something: the black guy who plays piper's friend, how come in every movie since that he always plays a general? I think he even has a cameo in Agent Cody Banks... as a general!
Guest TheHulkster Posted February 15, 2004 Report Posted February 15, 2004 Piper always kind of knew his role in the film industry, so he didn't really embarass himself like a lot of other wrestler-turned-actors. They Live was the shit. I also liked Marked Man (probably the only action film based around the seedy streets of Albany, NY).
WrestlingDeacon Posted February 15, 2004 Report Posted February 15, 2004 The black guy is Keith David and most of his significant roles after They Live does not have him as a General. He's been in Something About Mary, Requiem for a Dream, the voice of Goliath on Gargoyles, Roadhouse, Always, the voice of Spawn in the HBO cartoon, Barbershop and technically in Cody Banks he's the CIA director.

Slayer Posted February 15, 2004 Report Posted February 15, 2004 The black guy is Keith David Not to be confused with David Keith
NoCalMike Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 They live rules. Piper & Keith David made a great team.
dubq Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 I still don't see what people see in this pile of crap movie..
Guest Dynamite Kido Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 Piper + Carpenter = Stroke of Genius
Guest JMA Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 It's a shame the WWF didn't do a fight scene similar to the one in "They Live" with Piper and Bad News Brown. It would've been much better than the "painted half black" crap.
razazteca Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 I still don't see what people see in this pile of crap movie.. It's a B+ or A- movie if you will. Best damn weekend movie to be shown on your local Fox, UPN, WB affialiate.
Guest DVD Spree Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 i love that movie. I never really minded anything Piper was in in fact. The Bad Pack. Roddy Piper + Robert Davi + Sven Ole Thorsen + Ralph Moeller = a) potential B-movie greatness, or b) total and utter, unmitigated shite. Alas, twas not the former.
Slingshot Suplex Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 We saw They Live at the theater and had a blast. We called out spots during the fight scene. There weren't many people in the theater so it was ok
