HA...It just occured to me that after spending a long time saying he'd "Main Event WrestleMania XX"...John Cena actually curtain jerked the show.

The plus side was the crowd was extra hot for the start of the show, so he looks more over.

Eddie/Rey should be great, but I'll go out on a limb and predict the quality will be "not at good as that Havoc match."

First: Have you seen THAT Havoc match?

Second......that limb comment is like saying that Hogan vs Warrior II would be as good as the first one. Never gonna happen.

Yeah, I've seen that match, it's on the Rey DVD, remember?

And yeah, just a stupidly obvious observation, but it was mainly meant to reflect that despite the fact we're getting a show main evented by that match, it's still not going to match up to the one that WCW gave us back when they were just a couple cruisers who made it onto a PPV.

Although the difference between it then and now is a lot different from the situation with Hogan-Warrior II.

This case: moveset changes, adjustments to the "WWE style," and the wrestlers bulking up since 97.

That case: ....where to start..?

I know it's on the Rey DVD...which I don't have. I have my copy of Halloween Havoc in a box somewhere on VHS, but anyway....not everyone bought that so you never know.

To quote John from SSeries last year:

"This whole PPV is ass backwards, the main event is on first."

:P

Uh....I think Cena IS FROM BOSTON.

He's from Westbury.

I'm still pissed off that the SD Survivor Series match got about 14:00 and went on FIRST!!

Edit: Eh, I knew Cena was from city in Mass. I just assumed he was a Boston guy. Now I no longer hate him.

<<<Hates people from Boston, and more for people who like the Red Sox.

Eddie vs. Rey on Smackdown won't even be as good as Eddies entrance at HH97.

Well don't forget Eddie will probably be modeling that bomb ass 'Scarface' T-Shirt on Thursday. Scarface shirt = YAY!

What a lovely show. Lovely. Shelton gets the shove up the card a bit beating two guys before falling to Mysterio which is fine considering Rey is all cool. Rey then gets one over on Big Show before dropping out to Eddie. That's quality stuff there from a flatly, 'OMG that's what I would do!' standpoint. The only weakness is the Cena/Rhyno match since John has beaten that guy something like 4 times in the last two months.

This looks like a really good show. Raw wasn't bad, but some of it seem like they were just killing time until next week. Maybe a little hung over from the WM after party?

These guys got an extra day to nurse a hang over, so bring on the wrestling!

Also, the draft is next Monday. So does that mean we're gonna have a brand new SD roster next week?

We need a point of reference here; what other shows have you been to and what did they feature?

Beer truck Raw

Buried alive SD

Raw with Spike and Rhyno debut

Both Smackdowns before Invasion and Survivor Series PPVs (all during the Invasion)

1st Raw after the split

Austin announced as GM Raw

Raw right before this past Survivor Series

Ah fuck it, how was Eddie/Mysterio, Chavo/Ultimo and did Benjamin look good?

Eddie and Mysterio was an awesome main event. Chavo/Ultimo was an awesome match. Benjamin actually looked pretty good in the 3 matches that he worked in the gauntlet. Though don't expect too much out of his opener with Haas since that wasn't really given much time and the crowd wasn't too fond of it being that most of the match was wrest holds.

My main reasoning for saying that this was one of the best TVs I've ever attended was due to the fact that segments were very minimal and there was a lot of wrestling involved.

EDIT: I also want to add that I was surprised A-Train was not booked on the show being that he's from Boston too. Not that I'm disappointed he wasn't on the show.

I was told by someone who went to the event that the Undertaker was in Biker mode without the bike. He even wore the bandana. You may now start bitching about this...

I was also at the show, so here's another detailed live report:

Dark matches:

Horshu def. Funaki- not much happening here, Horshu seems like a decent 80's power guy with a good look, nothing more.

Orlando Jordan def. Johnny Stamboli- I was shocked Jordan actually won a match, but it was your usual crappy Johnny Stamboli affair.

Paul London/Billy Kidman def. Akio/Tajiri- This was actually a wicked fun match, with more highspots than usual for a WWE-style cruiser contest. Solidback-and-forth contest that seemed like a showcase for London, as he hit all of his ROH spots and put the match away with a 450 (which I guess is his new finisher). Hopefully this match gets added in to Velocity, because they only taped two matches and adding this one in would make it the best Velocity of the year.

Velocity:

Chuck Palumbo def. Hardcore Holly- Wow, WWE showed how commited they are to pushing Holly- from a title match at the Rumble to jobbing to a heatless jobber on the B-Show. Another blah match.

Chavo Guerrero def. Ultimo Dragon to retain Cruiserweight title- You HAVE to see Velocity just for this match- by FAR Ultimo's best match in WWE, since they actually gave it time, about 10 minutes. I seriously thought Ultimo had a chance of winning this match, it had some GREAT false finishes. HUGE Eddy chants throughout this, which put a smile on my face. Funny sidenote- my girlfriend, who for some cracked-out reason WANTED to go with me to this show and knows nothing about wrestling, said Ultimo was her favorite wrestler on the whole show and said, "it's a shame he never wins, he's so much better and more graceful than the other guys." Again, more highspots than I expected from a WWE cruiser match. Definitely go out of your way to see this one, it drew me in bigtime and even got a nonfan emotionally involved ("I'm starting to hate Chavo- don't you?" -the girl again) Not quite as good as Noble/London, but still great.

SD:

John Cena's opening promo was tons of fun, and drew big face heat for slamming the Yankees in his rap (of course) and the hometown crowd ate it up- I hadn't seen Raw so this was the first I'd heard of the lottery. Heyman defended Brock Lesnar to big heel heat, and slapped Cena, which got him beat down. Rhyno then ran in to save Heyman and quickly got squashed with the FU.

Paul threatened to get APA fired, and I was secretly very happy.

Scotty/Rikishi def. APA to retain tag titles- really slow match with a boring heat segment on Scotty. Finish came out of nowhere, with Rikishi hitting a thrust kick for the pin.

Right after, they cut to the back saying only Faarooq was fired, there was a later segment that made me laugh- Bradshaw, in his thickest Texas hick accent, goes "can we still be frriiiiends?"

Gauntlet match- the crowd SHAT all over Haas vs. Benjamin. Really bad idea to book two heels against each other and have a slow mat match. It was actually a pretty decent contest though, with both guys trying to outwrestle each other, and Shelton getting the win with a neat spinkick variant after Haas blocked a superkick. Gunn's portion sucked of course. Smart move by having Show cut a promo to rest up Shelton. I liked the fact that they seem to want to give WGTT an uppercard, New Age Outlaws-style push in the wake of the heel shortage. I missed Mysterio's win over Shelton due to a bathroom break. Mysterio/Show was your basic big guy/little guy squash with GREAT heat. The crowd, and the group I was with, popped BIGTIME when Cena cost Show the countout loss. Oh man, I was PUMPED I'd get to see Guerrero vs. Mysterio, LIVE! Funny random tidbit- my girl marked out HUGE for the 619 on Show.

Eddy Guerrero def. Rey Mysterio to retain WWE championship. Again, they gave this a ton of time, a little over 15 minutes, and it was a really tight match, if a little slow in spots. Eddy worked over the arm for the whole match, with Rey making short comebacks sporadically with occassional highspots. Rey did blow a pretty big spot though, as he tried to turn a springboard moonsault into a DDT but instead landed on Eddy pretty awkwardly. WWE does seem to be letting the wrestlers cut a little bit looser with their moveset, as this match had a distinctly WCW feel to it. Eddy missed the frogsplash and Rey got La Magistral for a close two, and Rey reversed Splash Mountain for another two. He had Eddy going after the 619, but missed the West Coast Pop and Eddy turned that into a weird rollup variation (focusing on the injured arm) for the win. MOTN, with Ultimo/Chavo from Velocity a close second. I'd say about ***1/2 for this match and and *** for the cruiser title match.

After the match, Heyman made some racial insults against both guys, saying they should be "deported" to Raw. Right as Heyman said something like, "I run this show and there's nothing anybody can do about it!"....

*BONG!*

MARKOUT! Undertaker, Texas Ranger walks out, complete with vintage entrance and PLANTS him with the Tombstone, the crowds goes fucking ballistic! AWESOME way to end the show.

Biggest Pops:

1. Undertaker's arrival

2. Eddy

3. Cena

4. Rey's win over TBS

Biggest Heat

1. Paul Heyman

2. Mentions of Brock Lesnar

3. Big Show

4. Negative heat for Haas vs. Benjamin

Nobody really got any heel heat, seeing as how Smackdown has basically no heels.

Of the 3 WWE shows I've been to live in the past 2 years (a post Katie Vick Raw last year, and a crappy Raw house show back in November) this blew the other two away. This show was entirely wrestling, almost no skits, and most of the wrestling was solid-to-good, with two standout matches in the cruiser title match and the ME. Good booking too, with Rey put over as a legit uppercard title threat, and Shelton picked up two big clean wins.

Oh, and if the BC dudes I met on the D-Line are reading this, drop me a line, not too many smartmarks to talk to in the Boston area!

Nice little review DuskTillDawn, I definately need to tape Velocity and the SD Main Event.

And in a weird note, my girlfriend's favorite wrestler is Ultimo too. Strange...

I want to be a Benjimite too!

Anyways, I must watch Smackdown and Velocity this week, as they sound like they are the best editions of the show this year.

I'm starting to like the fact that the WWE is starting to let the guys go out and do their thing.

The 450 for London, huh?

Sounds like a good move for him. Pretty unique (in the WWE), too. I know Jeff Hardy would pull it out once in a blue moon before he disintegrated, and I guess Scorpio used it back in the days, too, otherwise I can't think of anyone off the top of my head...

I guess he did need something new, unless they wanted to build a feud with Kidman over him "stealing" the SSP. That might actually not be a bad idea, as a starting point for him. He'd need to win, of course, so...;)

OT; Calling Christian X is, I guess, a nickname made from a nickname. Someone called him Xian after the X-Mas logic, and then some lazy bastardshortened that to X. The rest is history...

Hey BigCalbowski, where you from? I been to a bunch of them at the Pepsi arena as well.

I live in Boston, but I went to college at RPI so I attended quite a few at the Pepsi Arena during those years.

Poor show, no mention of Angle, lack of star power, thank goodness for the re-shuffle. This was no way near as good as Raw last spring. Surprised that Chavo got a bigger Eddie chant than Eddie did. Wonder if it was the crowd going numb during the WGTT match or something else.

Apparently having your WWE Champion (Eddie Guerrero), WWE Tag Team Champions (Rikishi & Scotty 2 Hotty), Cruiserweight Champion (Chavo Guerrero) & United States Champion (John Cena) (Yes, that's all of the belts on Smackdown) isn't enough to be considered having "star power." I'm sorry that Steve Austin wasn't there to stun anyone or that Brock Lesnar can't come out and dance or pray.

They got all the current champions plus The Undertaker & Rey Mysterio, yet this goon thinks the show didn't have enough star power? The only person missing was Kurt Angle. Brock is gone, and Austin was a one shot deal. Who the fuck was he expecting?

Tonights one of the few nights that Im actually looking forward to seeing Smackdown.

No opening video.

Show opens with the Cena and hes actually wearing the US title, throughout the whole interview. Talks about how hes from Boston and stuff.

Heyman comes out, says Lesnars gone, says Cena could be the new face of Smackdown but because of the "draft" that wrestlers should pray to god because those who get drafted by him are going to incur his wrath. He wants everyone on Smackdown off his show. Tries to hit Cena, Cena blocks and goes to attack Cena but Rhyno pops in.

Cena vs Rhyno. About 3 minutes long. Cena got a pretty good "lets go Cena" chant from the crowd. Cena wins with the F U.

Edge Video. Commercial #1

Heyman runs into the APA in the back, says if they don't beat the Champs that "you're fired" (pointing to Faarooq) but everyone assumed he meant the APA.

Scotty/Rikishi vs APA. Scotty got isolated in the ring for the first 3 minutes or so. Bradshaw busted out a Torture Rack type move but it didn't get a submission. Scotty gets a ddt reversal off the top and gets the tag to Rikishi who cleans house. Scotty goes for the worm but Faarooq knocks him down. Rikishi went for the stinkface, Bradshaw went for the clothesline from hell but Rikishi stepped out and gave him a crescent kick for the pin. Commercial #2

APA are mad in the back. Bradshaw wants to hear Heyman say they're fired, but he says he wasn't firing The APA, he was firing Faarooq. Faarooq tries to get Bradshaw to leave with him but Bradshaw doesn't budge. "After all these years, well I'll be damned, after all these years" - Faarooq.

Vince announces the redraft lottery on RAW.

Dawn says to WGTT, Billy Gunn, Rey Mysterio that Heyman isn't happy just as he walks in. "We're gonna play a game of divide and conquer" - Heyman. They will wrestle in a gauntlet with a shot at Eddy later on for a shot at the WWE title.

"theres no divide and conquere here, we're the Worlds Greatest Tag Team" - Benjamin. Heyman says Benjamin starts and his opponent is his partner. Commercial #3.

WM XX Video Package.

Shelton Benjamin vs Charlie Haas. Match was slow to start with some mat work, and the crowd wasn't into it. Small "Boring" chant about 2 minutes in. Cole brings up the point that he could be doing announcing with Lawler which possibly means that the announce teams will change. Match picks up at about the 4 minute mark.

"They could be the World's Greatest Single Guys" - Tazz, on what happens if one of them goes to RAW. Benjamin wins with a spin kick. Pretty decent match.

Benjamin helps Haas up and they hug. Who will Shelton face next???

John Cena DVD. Commercial #4

APA in the back. Bradshaw begs Faarooq not to leave but he does.

Shelton Benjamin vs Billy Gunn. More mat wrestling from Shelton early. A "USA" chant for some reason from the crowd. Billy Gunn eventually counters a submission and gets the advantage, getting a near pinfall. "Stinger splash" in the corner hits and then he goes for the Fame-asser and misses, and Shelton gets the pinfall with a rollup after about 4 minutes or so. Shelton doesn't have much time to celebrate as Big Show strolls on down to the ring. Commercial #5

Big Show interview joined in progress. He's missing something, hes missing his US title. He's cool with Heyman now after he talked things over with Heyman. Big Show isn't the next competitor, hes the FINAL competitor. He's walking out the new WWE Champion. Commercial #6

WM 21 Promo.

Shelton Benjamin vs Rey Mysterio. Faster paced match than the first two Gauntlet matches. Shelton with a couple of imressive suplexes on Mysterio. Mysterio hits the 619 and a leg drop off the top for a 3 count. Big Show is in the back laughing at the screen with Rey on it. Commercial #7

HOF Induction video

Rey Mysterio vs Big Show. Cole recalls the time when Big Show swung Rey Mysterio on the stretcher like a baseball bat into the ringpost. Rey hits a dropkick off the top but runs into a boot. Show with a one hand pin cover for 2. Show drops a leg for a 2 count. Show stands on Mysterio and then kicks him out of the ring. Big Show with a Gorilla press slam on Mysterio just as Cenas music hits and he walks out to the entranceway. Show gets out of the ring, and then Mysterio hits a 619 and Cena nails Show with the US Title and hes into the post. Big Show gets counted out, and Mysterio wins to face Eddy Guerrero for the Title. Big Show is upset in the ring. Commercial #8

Eddy Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio - WWE Championship

Both shake hands in the center of the ring. Rey gets ar armbar takedown. Eddy gets a 1 count with a headlock on the mat. 2 sucessive near falls for Rey on counters, and Rey takes Eddy out of the ring with headscisors. Eddy back in the ring and tempers flare between the two. Eddy pushes Rey into the corner and then starts working on Reys left arm/shoulder. Rey manages to get out but Eddy with a drop toe hold and goes back to work on the arm/shoulder. Rey gets out of it and hits a monkey flip, and then takes Eddy out of the ring again with bodyscisors from the apron. Rey hits a top rope backwards moonsault off the top rope to the outside. 6 minutes

RAW Promo Commercial #9

Back in action with a top rope superplex that gets a 2 count for Eddy. Eddy goes back to work on the arm. Irish whip reversed by eddy into a tilt a whirl backbreaker by Eddy and he goes back to work again on the arm/shoulder. Eddy with a hammerlock and pulls Rey up on his shoulder. Rey looks like he's tapping with his free arm, but apparently not. Rey counters into a roll up and a near fall. Eddy with the hammerlock and bridges it. Eddy keeps working on the same arm/shoulder. Rey counters and then hits (semi sorta) a move off the top rope while Eddy still had his arm. Rey hits a move off the top for 2, and then goes for a springboard moonsault but Eddy catches him, but Rey reverses with a DDT for a 2 count. Eddy has Rey in an electric chair but Rey gets out of it and Eddy then hits 2 of his 3 suplexes, Rey counters the 3rd for a 2 count. Eddy with another suplex and then he goes up for a frog splash and misses. Rey with a dropkick that sends Eddy into the ropes, 619. Rey misses the legdrop and then Eddy rolls him up for the 3 count.

Heymans out, his plan for Smackdown doesn't include either Eddy or Rey, he hopes that they get deported. Heyman is the only person on Smackdown guaranteed to be on Smackdown next week. Undertakers GONG, lights go out.

Taker and Paul Bearer come out. God how much Taker looks like a larger version of Terry Funk..lol..Heyman's in shock in the ring. Taker does his "Cue lights on the stairs" bit and has his eyes rolled back in his head. Eddy and Rey are behind heyman who's jaw is just about on the mat at this point. Rey and Eddy push Heyman into Taker who tombstones him, does his oldschool pin and sticks his tongue out as the lights go out and he rolls his eyes back again.

End Show.
