Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Recommended Posts

This was probably the best movie I have seen this year besides City of God, but since City of God was technically 2003, ESOTSM is my nod for best movie of 2004, so far.....

yeah thats the cover art i saw over at rotten tomatoes... i really REALLY don't like that quote about "a smart, sexy comedy..." because thats not what this movie is at all! i laughed out loud maybe at most 5 times, i was moved by the picture much much more than i was amused by it. its my favorite movie, but they're marketing to the wrong crowd...

BACK FROM THE DEAD, BITCHES~!

Damn you DH. Damn you.

That was one of the finest, mindfucktasticly brilliant movies I've seen in forever. Neck and neck with Collateral and Garden State for my FOTY. The most original concept I've seen since.........well, Memento.

Carey's Oscar Nod? Better happen.

Kaufman's Oscar Nod? Better happen.

Winslet's Oscar Win? Will happen.

That's your Best Actress of 2004. I don't give two shits about what else comes out this year, I'm not going to see a better performance by a female in the next few months.

WHAT.A.MINDFUCK.

*Spoilers*

"If you love something, give it away. If it comes back, it's yours. If it doesn't, it was never yours to begin with."

This was one bizarrely beautiful experiment in fate and love. I went into this expecting it all to be a dream and to an extent, it was. I don't want to get too into this discussion w/out having some things cleared up, so................

- Joel meets Clementine at the beach.

- Joel and Clementine fall in love etc.

- Clementine leaves Joel and has her mind erased and then meets Patrick.

This is where my brain begins to hurt.

If somebody could help me out here it'd be great............

*************SPOILERS***************

you are right up til that point,

After they both have thier memories erased, They both go to the beach where they originally met because their love is obviously more powerful than the procedue that tried to erase it. THis was the first scene which took place AFTER they were both erased.

Wow, it's great to see this thread again. Of course I now own the DVD, and have watched everything on the sucker (except for the commentary, which I'll do soon), and I love it more now than I did when I first saw it in the theater. I love how it makes me feel, what it makes me think, etc... as well.

It's my favorite film ever, and in my opinion the greatest film ever period.

From top to bottom, every aspect of it is perfect to me. I even own the soundtrack and I can't get enough of that either. I could watch this one over and over again, and each time find something that I love about it.

I love Memento, I mean really love it, as most here know. For me to actually say that I love ESotSP so much more than Memento, should really say a lot about the quality here.

This film should just be showered with Oscar nominations, and other nominations from other shows also. It should also go on to win most of what it's nominated for. Sadly, I doubt we'll see it be nominated for anything other than screenplay, much less win anything. It's going to get, well, Mementoed.

The Clementine character is by far, by FAR, my favorite female role ever, period. I also loved Sam in Garden State, but Clementine was a far better character overall.

ESotSP and Garden State should both win something, the two best films of the entire year. After those two, way after, I agree that Collateral belongs there with them.

But ESotSM, it should win and win big.

My favorite movie of the year. I went to pick it up on release day last week when i'd been informed my parents had ordered it from some DVD club. The extra week or two, while frustrating, is well worth the wait.

Well it is more like Patrick meets her. When Patrick and Kirsten Dunst and Mark Ruffalo are in Joel's apartment, they elude to pretty much having sex with Clementine while she was passed out drunk, and then Patrick happened to fall in love with her in the process in his own sick and twisted way, and it was all a scheme of his to make himself seem like the perfect match for Clementine, which of course didn't work because he wasn't JOEL, he was just Patrick trying to be like Joel.

and oh yeah.......this movie fucking rocks boats. It was even better the second time around :)

To add another thing. A lot of people said the movie was different from what they thought it would be and it turned out to be great. Well it is funny because from the previews, I envisioned it to be the exact mindfuck it was, and you know what it was, and for once in the last few years, it EXCEEDED THE HELL out of my expectations......

Eh?

If you're talking about the 'girl we did last week' comment I thought they were referring to the fact they did the memory wipe opp. on her last week.

Then again, I haven't seen the film for a while so may have forgotten a line.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

If Jim Carrey does NOT get a nod for this movie then God is dead. I did not think he could possibly put on a better performance after The Truman Show and Man on the Moon but he did.

And what else has come out that deserves a nod?

Right now I've seen David Carradine and Jim Carrey as deserving nods, of course Colin Farrell will get one for Alexander and just have to watch late October to mid December for the final spots.

Jim Carrey is a fantastic, true, actor. He's so much more than Ace Ventura and The Mask, and over time he'll prove himself to everyone else just as he has already proved to me.

I think if Carradine got one, it'd be for supporting actor.

Anyway, I'm waiting until my birthday at the end of the month to get this DVD, and seeing all of this praise is just making it harder to wait.

Finally saw it last week. Fantastic film. Definitely in my Top 20 all-time.

Funny story... watching the credits, the song that was playing ("Light and Day") sounded eerily familiar. At first I thought it was the one they used in the adverts, but when the music credits came on, that's when I realized why it sounded so familiar. The group who performed the song, The Polyphonic Spree, had performed at a record store in Edison, NJ a few years ago, and me and my then-girlfriend/now-wife had seen them, and listening to the song brought me back to how good I time I had that day. The group was about 20 strong, dressed in choir robes, and they were absolutely amazing. If you liked "Light and Day", the rest of their stuff is just as good. (I think they're from Utah.)

I also liked how Kate Winslet was able to conceal her English accent so perfectly. Her Americanese sounds almost exactly like Helena Bonham-Carter in Fight Club and Rachel Weisz in The Shape of Things.

Not a fan of Jim Carrey at all, but his performance did for me what Adam Sandler's did in Punch-Drunk Love, another of my faves. For at least one movie, my mind was totally changed about the actor.

As for whether or not it's a happy ending, I say happy with a caveat. Once they agreed to stick it out at the end of the movie, they basically said, "Yeah, we'll probably end up in the same rut, and probably end up with the same resentment and loathing, and probably want to erase each other from our memories again, but for now, who cares? We're happy, and that's all that matters right now."

And not for nothing, but I thoroughly enjoyed that side shot of Kirsten Dunst's naked boobie. She sure has come along way from Interview with a Vampire. ;)

Finally saw the film tonight, just a beautiful sweet film, I think this film is so honest about how relationships work. What's cool about Charlie Kaufman is he tells basic human stories but he throws twists in there so they don't seem conventional, but because the underlying story is usually about love, desire, passion, we identify with it. He doesn't cheat his characters.

Kate Winslet....ahhh.....such luminous beauty

I'm just waiting for Ray to come out, I haven't seen a truly good film in the theaters since "Collateral" (though The Terminal was a sweet little Spielberg fairytale).

So was the opening scene of the movie, the same event/morning as the last scene of the movie? Or was it history repeating itself when Kate Winslet(in Joel's mind) said to meet her on the beach? I am not quite 100% sure.

Yes. If you notice, the scene at the end was merely cuts from the opener. I really liked how they resolved the little things, like the dent in Jim Carrey's car, Elijah Wood's presence in front of Kate Winslet's apartment, etc. Quite masterful.

Cool. I hope they play in the Northeast some time soon.

The "Together We're Heavy" CD release party was in NYC, but I forgot to go check it out. I hear it's a fun show to see live.

Well, after owning the DVD now for a while I have to say that not only is this film my personal pick for the best film ever as well as my favorite, but it's also the most rewatchable.

Especially the first 17 minutes or so before the opening credits even roll.It just has an absolute perfect charm to it and all of that time is even before it even gets started.

Wow.

I don't really keep track of movies, and I watch them even less, so I didn't know much about Eternal Sunshine..., aside from a few people really liking it. Kind of like Lost in Translation. I ended up really liking both of them. They're both sweet, and touching, and ESotSM has the added bonus of being pretty weird.

I really liked the effect in the bookstore, where Joel and Clementine were having a conversation, and slowly enough, all of the books started going blank. Made me think my mind was going funky, which was convenient, since that's what was happening to Joel.

I downloaded this film from Suprnova a couple of months ago because there were so many people getting it so I thought it must be worthwhile. Then I saw it's review on IMDB and it had a good rating, so I thought it's definetly worth watching. I never got chance to watch it since then but after reading what people have said in this thread I will watch it tomorrow night. I would watch it tonight but I've left the CD at my Uni house.
