JoeDirt Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Post any Schiavone-related funny stuff in this thread. Just to get us started: "We talked so much about it. What if Savage wins the title? What if Hogan wins the title? Whats gonna happen? Who's going to have the power in the NWO? But I'm gonna be honest with you. I don't give a darn!" ------------ "THERE'S STING! THERE'S STING! THERE'S STING! oh, he just hit Luger? thats not Sting...Its Kevin Nash!" --------------- Heenan- "Sting is human just like everyone else." TS- "I don't know if he's human. I think he's transcendent." ----------------- "The Steiners are more smarter than announcers and others give them credit for."
Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 You obviously never listened to Sean Mooney, Craig DeGeorge, Lord Alfred Haye,s Todd Pettingle, David Crockett, Rob Bartlett, Slick (he did a few PTW's in 92 I think), Vince McMahon, Michael Cole, Al Snow, Bill Demott, and a host of others.

Whoa. Cole OWNS Schiavone. Ditto everybody on that list outside of Rob Bartlett (who sucked hard --- but hey, he's with Imus, so it's to be expected) and David Crockett (though he did take a sickle from Nikita, it's closer to a wash there) Heck, for a while there, Tony called almost EVERY move a sidewalk slam. -=mike

Okay, maybe he's not the WORST ever...Vince was bad at times, Coachman is awful... Let's just say that Schiavone was simply _annoying_. "Fans...this is the greatest night in the history of our sport, and the biggest Nitro main event we've ever seen is still to come."

I just watched an old Nitro today where Curt Hennig set up to hit the PerfectPlex/Hennigplex/Fisherman's suplex on DDP. "Is the going to bulldog him????"

Guest Mulatto Heat Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Who cares if someone thought he was the worst announcer ever or not? Anyway, being a rare Nitro viewer and non-WCW PPV buyer I often heard about Tony calling everything a sidewalk slam but never caught him saying it myself... ..That is, until I downloaded Benoit/Booker from Spring Stampede 98 a little over a year ago. Booker starts to make his comeback, whips Benoit off the ropes, gives him a spinebuster. Tony: "SIDEWALK SLAM!"
Lil' Bitch Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 I didn't mind Alfredy Hayes, he was charasmatic, IMO. Mooney was okay. Pettingale was just fucking annoying (his first interview with Pamela Anderson at RR 95 for example).
Guest wildpegasus Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 I liked Tony as an announcer. I've never understood the dislike.

I think your reffering to "The Candyman" Brad Armstrong from WCW circa 90-91. Unless Pettingle actually WORE candy-striped pants..... WWF was home to lots of awful on air personalities, including the hyper chinese guy and the ugly chick who hosted Mania with Todd. GOD, I wonder what she had to do to get her job
Guest Choken One Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Believe it or not...Schiavone was a great announcer early in his days...before he caught Lex Luger Disease...He learned no matter what...he was keeping his spot...so stop making any effort.

I'd say so. I got a few tapes of NWA stuff from the mid-late 80s and he's pretty good. By the mid 90s he was still tolerable, but I don't recall much after that.
Guest Choken One Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 he was fantasico at Spring Stampede 1999...ironically...that was the last good WCW ppv ever.
geniusMoment Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 I always liked Tony. You cannot blame him for his announcing from 98 on, he was told to promote things. What did you want him to do, say how he really felt about the product and then get fired? I always felt with a great product Tony could be a great announcer, listening to Flair/Sting from the first clash I think Tony carried that broadcast.
Guest theoldxpac Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Tony did suck, but Cole is worse. McMahon wasnt too bad in the 80s, its just when it got to the mid-90s he really started to suck.

Okay, maybe he's not the WORST ever...Vince was bad at times, Coachman is awful... At least Vince hyped his product as though it was worth watching. Tony was out-right rude on many, many occasions to fans and spent several matches, that featured fantastic wrestling action, talking about Hulk Hogan or Sting. And the Coach isn't awful at all, he's just average. Nothing special, but he does the job. UYI
Betty Houle Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 On a side note, I loved the Hayes-Graham-Trongard combination for commentating on the MSG shows in 1989. Great bad stuff!
MillenniumMan831 Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 I can almost recall exchanges like: Trongard: Uh OH, he's going for a modified version of uhhhh . . . Graham: That looks like a version of a camel clutch there Rod. Hayes: He's really got that headlock sunk in good too. I don't think Savage will be getting out of this. Trongard: Savage is IN DEEP TROUBLE folks!!! Graham: Savage needs to make a comeback Rod. Trongard: I know, he is IN DEEP TROUBLE here. Eh, I haven't heard them for a while, but I'm sure they've spouted out similiar lines.
Si82 Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Here's some Schiavone quotes: "Back in Jacksonville with four words, I want a Nitro Girl." - WCW Nitro (07/09/99) "This is a first time ever in pro wrestling, in any type of wrestling, that a man has been told that he will wrestle, not one, not two, but three times in one night." - WCW Nitro (12/27/99) "Tank Abbott can dance, I don't think there's any question about that." - WCW Nitro (07/18/00) "Every fan around the world wants to see the Harris Twins go up against KroniK" - WCW Nitro (09/04/00) "Do you believe everything you see on this program?" - WCW Nitro (09/18/00)
MillenniumMan831 Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 "How bout that one guys" "We are set to go with our next match" "This is what WCW is all about, that Never Say Die attitude and we're seeing it here" All repeated several million times during his WCW run.
Guest Fook Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 We can't do a best (or is it worst?) of Schiavone without this gem: "If you're even THINKING about changing the channel to our competition, fans, do not, because we understand that Mick Foley, who wrestled here one time as Cactus Jack, is gonna win their World title! That's gonna put some butts in the seats, hyeh."
Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 To be fair, Schiavone started to suck in the late 90s, hence why no one can think of anything stupid from 1984-1996. I remember on the Final Nitro he burned Regal by saying something along the lines of "We've done some crazy things in WCW including putting your ass over on T.V.".
Slingshot Suplex Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Tony was a very good announcer who quickly descended into the bowels of bad announcing. His mid 80's NWA work is very good but by the time WCW ended,he was intolerable.

His mid 80's NWA work is very good but by the time WCW ended,he was intolerable. See McMahon, Vincent K. I remember one heat from 2001, Coach and Micheal Hayes were commentating i think, and all they were fucking talking about during the entire show was HHH/Austin in the 2/3 falls coming up later that night at NWO. Seriously, that was all they fucking talked about, and they must of said this about a 1000+ times during the show; "Stone Cold and Triple H go one on one tonight!" Im pretty sure they both creamed themselves over that.

Coach creams his pants whenever Al Snow calls a random Indy jobber a Babbagadush or whatever the hell the name is he stole from Extreme Elimination Challenge. Jeez, he sucks and steals the crappiest jokes from a crap show (but still funny sometimes).
The Metal Maniac Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 Tony Schiavone is the worst announcer ever, and I can prove it. I can't remember the exact PPV (Maybe a Great American Bash '96 or something like that) but it's Benoit vs. Kevin Sullivan in a Falls Count Anywhere match. You know, the one with the infamous "THERE'S A LADY IN THE MEN'S WASHROOM!" call? Yeah, that match. Near the end, Benoit pulls a table out from under the ring. Tony's call, which proves he's the worst announcer ever? "And Benoit . . . has got the chair." Yes. He called a TABLE a CHAIR. Case closed.
