The OAO Hellboy Thread

Surprised nobody made a thread about this. But after seeing the movie, it figures.

It's not that Hellboy is bad, it's just mediocre given what they could have done. I got a feeling during the movie that it only scratched the surface of what could have been an interesting plot. It could have been a new franchise, along the lines of X-Men. At the very least it could have been a paranormal MIB. But Hellboy is just bland. Very, very bland.

Ron Perlman does a great job as the title character, but everybody else doesn't seem to care. The female lead especially looks like she's just going through the motions. David Hyde Pierce does the voice of the fish guy in a performance as forgettable as the character. The action scenes are fun just for the hell of it, but you can only see the same fight with the squid monster so many times before it loses it's luster. And don't even think about the plot. It isn't there. In fact it seems like a collage of plots from many scifi action movies. What do you think?

I saw it tonight, and part of me loved it and part of me just doesn't care one way or the other. I haven't felt this way about a film in a very long time.

To me it seemed like it was about three different genres of film mixed into one, and it couldn't decide on which to stick with, but that might have been intentional. I don't know, seeing how I didn't even know this existed in any form untill I heard about the movie coming out.

I liked it enough to want to watch a sequal, I'm interested in the characters and I do want to see where they go from where they left off.

My main problem was with the final battle. It started, then it was over just like that, or so it seemed to me.

I'll give it a 7/10, and hope for a sequal...but if one never comes out, I wont really be that dissapointed over it.

I also loved the character of Hellboy, a lot.

I'm penciled in to see it tommorrow. I'll probrably have a review for it up on my site sometime this weekend.

As for Walking Tall, I gotta hope I can get a friend to get me a download of it because there is no fucking way I lend my money for a third time to a lame ass Rock movie. Fool me once, shame on you (Scorpion King), fool me twice, shame on me (Rundown).

NEVER AGAIN, ROCK!!

I can't help but laugh at the previews...People actually WANT to see this? "Hellboy" or whatever looks like a fucking children's cartoon and looks generic and boring.

I had never seen/read a Hellboy comic in my entire life but after watching the film, Hellboy could be one of my favorite comic to film characters of all time. It's a fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. The only problems are that the movie drags a little in the middle and the final fight is over too quickly. Definately DVD worthy.

I disagree. I think it was one of the five worst movies I've seen in the theater my entire life. Some of the jokes were alright, but the action was blah and the story was just lacking. Add in the fact it was so damn long and I wanted to jab my eyes out. I was checking my watch every 5 minutes by the end.

Leaving the theater I heard my fair share of worst movie ever comments as well.

Wow, this is the only place so far I've heard bad Hellboy comments. Leaving the theatre, my friends and I (who are not comic fans) agreed that this is probably the best comic book movie ever. It was non stop awesomeness. I had just bought the first Hellboy book and thought it was pretty good, but the movie just raised everything up a notch. The theatre was packed and I sincerely hope this movie does good in the box office so they can make the sequels they have talked about.

I thought it was great(outside of the first 10 minutes and the last 10).....and it was nice and violent(albeit bloodless and PG-13).

I hope the 3 disc DVD set in December is an R-Rated cut.

I don't know about "r rated cut" since Del Toro was aiming for PG-13, but it will supposedly be the director's cut.

I saw it tonight and really enjoyed it. I can see how some people may not enjoy it, but if you go into it with the right mindset, It's worth the two hours you've spent with it

Hellboy was a pure comic book movie.  If you don't like comic books, you won't like the movie.  It is not really a straight-up adaptation like Hulk or the X-Men movies which try to be serious.

From what I've heard Hellboy: The Comic also doesn't take it self that serious.

It was dumb. Pacing sucked, anti-climatic. Selma Blair is cute as hell, but her acting range spans from "timmid" to "scared".

Cool visuals, Pearlman was great, but the movie didn't follow through on things.

I thought it was fun movie, but much like Dawn of the Dead, I couldn't see myself buying it or going out of my way to watch it again. Just nothing there that I really connected with. The ending did feel anti-climatic, but I loved the Lovecraftian influence, especially the Cthulhuesque monster slithering from the sky.

I'm just going to say that for this movie, having a limited range was what the role called for considering according to what we've seen that an emotional moment would lead to lots and lots of fire.

This movie seems very love-it-or-hate-it, and you know they say those are the marks of something special. I think I will drag one of my boys to see it this weekend.

I just got back from seeing the movie. I thought it was a really good adaptation of the comic. So far I've only read the first graphic novel and the movie seemed to borrow a lot from it. Overall, I enjoyed it. It left you wanting more at the end.

I plan to check out the other graphic novels soon.
