Personally I like drafts better as the lottery seems fixed. That and with the NFL at least you know that if your team sucks the whole season you get a shot at the top players coming out compared to the NBA where the team that doesn't do the worst can still get the #1 overall pick while the worst team could get a 10 etc.

I believe the NHL uses the same system as the NBA correct?

I profoundly believe that The Draft is EONS better...

No one can honestly buy that Cleveland "just happened" to be the #1 seed for the LeBron Sweepstakes.

Orlando SHOULD get the #1 seed and take Okafor. I believe if the nba wants...they can have 2-13 lottery but the WORST team should be automatic #1.

But that defeats the purpose of the lottery*, to ensure that a team doesn't just drop games intentionally to clinch the #1 pick.

*for those of you who don't believe it's to make sure Ewing is a Knick and James is a Cavalier

Yeah, just like the Rockets got #1 when Yao was in the draft.

Doesn't explain San Antonio winning the lottery when Duncan was in the draft instead of Boston, though. (Unless I'm mistaken and Boston wasn't worse than the Spurs that year.)

But yeah, a straight up draft is much, much better.

^Exactly. Ewing to the Knicks in the 80's was probably fixed as that was when the lottery was still "random" draw and not based on giving better odds to the team who had the worst record. There was a rumor about the NBA wanting Yao to play in New York or Golden State because of the large Asian populations in those areas but Houston got the #1 pick. Cleveland last year tied for the worst record in the league so they had as good of odds as anyone to get the #1 pick. Trust me if it had been fixed the NBA would have loved to have LeBron in New York or Chicago instead.

I can't believe nobody's brought up Orlando's astounding luck in getting Penny Hardaway with the third pick after finishing something like 17th in the league as an example of rigging the lottery.

So I did.

actually I had Golden St. pegged to "win" the lottery as it's such a large Asian Area...or Seattle since ASIA already gotten used to watching Ichiro.

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

the one thing I like about the lottery is it discourages tanking. Last year the Nuggets got rid of everybody to suck as much as possible and they wound up at 3. I was amused.

I thought it was great out the Spurs had a HORRIBLE year, then they get a number 1 draft pick.

Tim Duncan is their pick and they have the tandom of David and Tim.

Could call Choken because I could see Orlando getting number 1 and getting Emeka. Then you have T-Mac/Emeka and a team you have to watch out for in a few years.

NHL's is akin to the NFL. You are last, you get 1st overall.

Doesn't the NHL make the teams with 3 or 4 worst records eligible for the first pick?

So I did.

I was about to, and I do believe they were the "best" non-playoff team that year.

For Vern:

The selection order in the first round is subject to a lottery, held among the teams that hold the top 14 picks. The winning team moves up a maximum of four places in the draft order. The lottery is weighted to favor the teams with the fewest points. It was introduced to prevent weak teams from deliberately losing in order to be guaranteed the number-one pick in the upcoming draft.

Mark Madden's been bitching about a conspiracy this week on his radio show about how the Rangers are going to wind up with the first pick and draft that guy who's supposed to be the next superstar.

Oh, and I think the draft is fine in the NFL and the lottery works for the NBA (and I guess NHL.) I have no problems with how either one works...

Evolution of the NBA lottery...

In a further refinement in October of 1989, the Board of Governors adopted a weighted system beginning with the 1990 NBA Draft Lottery, which included 11 teams due to expansion. The team with the worst record during the regular season received 11 chances at the top pick (out of a total of 66), the second-worst team got 10 chances and the team with the best record among the non-playoff clubs got one chance.

The Magic defied the new lottery odds by winning the No. 1 pick two years in a row. In 1992, the weighted system worked in their favor as they parlayed the second-worst record (21-61) into LSU center Shaquille O'Neal. O'Neal helped Orlando make a 20-win improvement and the Magic just missed the playoffs at .500 in 1993. With just one chance out of 66, the Magic scored the No. 1 pick yet again and selected Michigan forward Chris Webber, trading him immediately to the Warriors for the draft rights to the No. 3 pick, Memphis guard Penny Hardaway and three future draft picks.

The Board of Governors approved a modification of the Lottery system in November of 1993 that, effective with the 1994 NBA Draft Lottery, increased the chances of the teams with the worst records in the league winning one of the top three picks in the draft while decreasing the lottery chances of the teams with the best records. The new system increased the chances of the team with the worst record drawing the first pick in the draft from 16.7 percent to 25 percent, while decreasing the chances of the team with the best record among lottery teams from 1.5 percent to 0.5 percent.

About the NHL....

I believe the bottom 5 teams are put in a lottery-style thing. I just saw something on ESPN about it yesterday, that's why I feel confident in saying it's correct.

Really?

Well geez. I always thought bottom team got rights.

*thinks about who's on the bottom this year*

...hm, I guess I could see why they use lottery.

GO PENGUINS!

Just like how they snagged Marc-Andre Fleury and when the kid says "I'll forgo my salary to play", and the team balks to the NHLPA, I kinda wish the kid was on a different team (fuck the NHLPA, the kid wants to play).

GR. I don't want the Penguins getting the #1 Draft Pick. No, no, no.

The issue would have been bigger than just Marc-Andre, though; you just know the union would make a huge stink about every little issue if they accepted that offer.

But if my Penguins get that Russian kid this year, they might actually have a team sometime soon! This is love.

Pens are a joke -- bunch of welfare queens that are now whining about getting a new arena after the Pirates and Steelers had their new playpens built...

The NHL does a lottery with all the non-playoff teams, a la the NBA. But it only makes one draw (not three), and also includes the caveat that a team can only move up a maximum of four spots (to prevent a 1994 Orlando Magic-type situation).

Lebron James going to the Cavs was fixed!

Not only that but the second pick was fixed as well.

I thought that it was a strange coincidence that it came down to Memphis and Cleveland, considering that if Memphis got #1 they would have kept the pick and if they didn't then Detroit would get the pick. It looked like the NBA deliberately created a suspenseful moment to get and keep viewers tuned in.

Oh for christ sake.

EVERY thing isn't a conspiracy.

I think that the NBA lottery style is better due to teams would definately tank games to get there. Not exactly the players, but the GM and uppermanagement would trade and release or even bench players to miss the playoffs. (two years ago, Phoenix traded Kidd, Cliff Robinson yet were still in the 8th place at teh allstar break. So then they sent Rodney Rodgers and Toni Delk (who made up 32 pts per game, their number one and two 3 point shooters and number one rebounder) for Milt Placio, Randy Brown and Joe Johnson(johnson was the 3rd string 2 guard and Pilacio was a 3rd string point and Randy Brown was injured and hadn't played all year) just so they could make sure the team didn't make the playoffs...it did get them Amare though...)

I do think that the ball drawing should be live so that all the speculation can stop.

There was a rumor about the NBA wanting Yao to play in New York or Golden State because of the large Asian populations in those areas but Houston got the #1 pick.

Apparently Houston has the largest Vietnamese population in the States - large enough that they put Vietnamese in addition to English and Spanish on electoral ballots. And they've got a growing Chinese population as well.

But of course this is ignoring that Toronto has a HUGE Chinese population. Yao and Vince woulda been awesome. Also interesting to note that Vancouver probably has the highest Chinese population per capita in North America. Too bad the Grizzlies moved to Memphis...

The Penguins didn't even get the #1, the Crapitals did.

On one hand, I want Ed Olchyk to succeed, but I don't want it to be another "Pittsburgh can't afford to pay him to play the entire season"
