Next year I head off to NIU to begin my university career at the ripe old age of 17. I've been warned by just about everyone that I'm going to get fat when I go to school, which is something I'd really rather not happen.. Right now I'm about 5'10" and around 170 lbs., which seems pretty heavy, I think, but it must all just be bone mass or something.

Anyhow, so far the only precautionary measures I've come up with are

1. Don't drink. Apparently, this will not only keep my weight down but automatically make me smarter than a good portion of my class.

2. Avoid the cafeteria food as it's loaded with carbs that never get burned off.

For whatever reason I'm just really concerned about this. I've been lucky to get by with just a high metabolism and a lot of walking and other exercise throughout high school. So maybe I'll be able to work on my tennis game a little, develop some halfway decent basketball skills, whatever I can to avoid being "the guy that comes back huge."

Don't eat. Ever. Can't gain weight if you're not taking in any calories.

Almost everyone that lives in residence that I've seen has gained weight so far and I'm only in first year. The best thing I guess I can recommend is to resist temptation and don't buy anything from the cafeteria. Everything there has a wierd shine to it as a result from the extra layer of oils and fat covering it up. The main factor that caused me to not eat at the caf though, is the pricey cost of everything. Seven bucks for a crappy burger, fries and a small drink was ridiculous.

If you live in the dorms and have a meal card- make sure you think of it as money and not a free ticket to snack.

Be warned- the cafeteria is filled with desserts- they are not your friend.

Beer is fattening (but fuck that noise- drink what you want- just cut out all the other bad shit).

Most colleges will have free/cheap gyms. Use it.

Avoid eating fast food.

I hardly ever ate fast food. When I did, it was usually to Subway and it was close enough that I could walk to and back in 15 minutes so I did that.

Of course, I went to a Culinary Arts school and we had decent kitchens and so it was an obvious choice for me to buy groceries to cook for meals each week, most of which were just for me since my roomates chose to eat out a lot (which never made sense to me).

I had some delicious sugar cookies today at the open house...a little TOO delicious.

Yeah I think the rec center and tennis courts are free. The beer thing shouldn't be a problem because I don't drink alcohol...I think it's a locus-of-control issue.

Now that I know how to keep the weight off, my next mission = getting a dorm room to myself. I either A) feign a mental disability or B) room with some idiot that'll get kicked out.

I found that C- have a roommate who sleeps at his girlfriend helps.

Mostly I just spent as little time as possible in my room. Always kicked it at my friends rooms and only went to my room to pass out.

I also had a crazy Romanian roommate who would set the alarm to like 3 AM and not wake up to until I'd walk over and turn it off... with my fist. He smelled too.

btw- you might think you don't drink- but college will change that. I turned several of my friends from "I don't drink" to "I'm fuhxed up again" in a quarter. Problem is that I'm a big guy- and none of my friends could hang with me. It's not awesome being the most sober person in a room full of newbie drunks.

If possible eat early so your food doesn't just sit in your stomach overnight.

Screw not drinking, you'll drink plenty.

Like the others said, use your gym and you'll be set.

Sound advice. Don't eat after 7. If you're going to eat shit that's bad for you- do it early in the day.

(please note- it's 9 and I haven't had dinner yet).

I'd really rather not deal with alcohol, really...I'll do whatever I can to avoid getting drunk.

Don't go to college then. It'll be everywhere.

That said- if you can control how you act under the influence- it's fun stuff. I'm of the firm belief that nobody does anything drunk that isn't lurking within them sober.

I'm a bad influence.

I was actually one of the lucky few who didn't gain weight in first year, basically due to walking everywhere instead of taking taxis or buses.

Ironically enough, I'm now reaching the end of second year and I've gained about 10 pounds despite having to walk 15 minutes to class instead of the 15 seconds I had to do last year when on campus.

I blame the Wendy's that's literally a 3 minute walk away.

Eat no calories. Burn no calories. Withdrawls rule!

Idear! Live on protein shakes! Healthy, and a useful alibi when somebody gets beat up in a locker room. (Points if you get it)

TCR wants to be like Randy Orton? I don't believe a college accepted you if that's true.

my suggestion is cocaine. Don't eat anything and when you need some energy sniff a fat line.

Don't kid yourself- I put Orton does pretty well. He's not a bad looking guy.

Most girls don't care about workrate.

It's possible to go to a major school (or a minor school, whatever) and not drink. I do it. Yes, there's beer and all kinds of alcohol all over the place, but drinking is not a requirement. Just don't do anything you don't want to do.

I just got this mental picture of women defining a guy's sexual prowess as his "workrate." Whether the star system comes into play...I don't know.

OMG~! *****!!! FOTYC~!

I lost about 20 pounds at college because I walked everywhere and was too poor to eat. You pricks in the cushy dorms with the food cards have it lucky. You look different at yourself when you're up at four in the morning, nodding off over the stove, ashes falling into your ramen noodles before you've got to be at lab in four hours, and still have a paper to finish.

5'10" and 170lbs isn't skinny. Nor is 6'0" and 185 lbs (this would be me), yet I was told I was "too skinny" the other night.

Some people have a very loose definition of "skinny."

I think people have a loose definition of fat these days.

And in that picture whrere you were showing off your girlish wrist, you did look a little thin. That...that was you...right?

Yeah, that was me. I don't have any "beefier" pictures laying around; some of that weight is muscle, though.

Anyway, I agree that people have too loose a definition of "fat," too. But I'd say people like me and--presumably--TCR are more of an average build.

He's not skinny, but TCR's definitely short, though.

Me, I'm built like a brick shithouse.

I have it on good word that brick shithouses notoriously have shoddy craftmanship.

It all depends on your bone structure and how much mass you have. 5 feet 10 inches and 170pds can look a LOT different on different people. I'm 6 feet 1 inch with a weight of about 190 right now. When I'm at a lower fat percentage my waist is under 30 inches. I think I'm at 31 right now. I'm an ectomorph who has a hard time putting on muscle but have managed to do so. Without the weights and all the extra food I think I'd naturally be at 130.
