The OAO NBA Playoffs/Finals Thread

So is everyone who's saying that Detroit is putting more effort into it admitting that Detroit is better than LA or are you trying to say "If LA tried they'd win!" Because if that's what you're saying.....you're a moron.

And what was that I saw tonight!? The UNSTOPPABLE SHAQ WAS STOPPED!

Also...why did the crowd go nuts when Darko stepped in? Because they knew he was a rookie that hasn't seen much action so Brown figured it was in the bag?

Take that sentiment and quadruple it. Darko is a really... awkward player and really doesn't look comfortable on teh court, so when the game is in any way competitive, he sits on the bench. It has to be a rout when he comes in, which is why you'll hear "Darko!" chants in blowout games. He's earned the nickname "The Human Victory Cigar" because of it.

Yes today's game had me smiling ear to ear.

They finally showed Detroit some respect on national tv.

Can't wait till Sunday.

When Kareem Rush came in and like immediately hit a 3-pointer I went "OH NO! NOT KAREEM!" because I do fear the man's ability after the Minnesota game. Luckily he was held off.

Any time Mvedenkoarfnheoth tries to shoot the ball I scream "YES! SHOOT IT!" because well.......he sucks.

BTW- Darko even gets cheers in other cities. This guy is a future superstar folks. He already has a gimmick and he hasn't even played longer than 7 minutes in one game yet!

Holy ass whippin, Batman! Grab a shovel so we can scoop up what's left of the Lakers!

In all seriousness, I did not expect this at all. I expected a close game with the Lakers trying to win this game with a big play or two. It didn't come anywhere near that. The Lakers do have injuries to Malone, Fisher, and George along with the fact that the Pistons are just flat out better athletes than the Lakers with the exception of Kobe. Everyone focuses on the Malone injury, but the Fisher injury should be just as bothersome to Laker fans. Fisher is/was the best on the ball pressure guy on the point guard on the team since Payton decided to stop playing. You could see that the Pistons didn't have as much trouble bringing the ball up the court against Fisher because of his knee injury. This allows Billups, Hamilton, and Hunter to get the Pistons into their offensive sets better. Plus it hurts them when they run pick and roll, which they did to death against the Lakers. I actually expected Malone to sit this game and see if the Lakers could steal a game without him. That would've given him 5 days of rest for his knee.

The Piston defense is something to behold. Larry Brown doesn't put you in unless you are ready to play some "D". That vaunted defense is the primary reason the Laker bench has not produced anything positive except Walton in game 2. You could also see the adjustments Larry Brown made. He saw that Luke was killing them in the last game by doing little things, so Brown made his guys go after the rook and he ended up in foul trouble early and was a non factor. Detroit's work on the boards is also beautiful. Usually the Lakers make it a priority to outrebound the opposing team, but the Pistons aren't having it. You have to love the effort seeing all 5 Pistons either rebounding or scrambling for loose balls. It's something I wish I could see my beloved Kings embrace.

I expect at least Kobe to bounce back and have a monster game 4. Guys like him just don't get held down like that for very long. I anticipate Kobe will go right at Tayshaun to try to get him into early foul trouble. Tayshaun has done a fantastic job on Kobe when he is guarding him. Everyone talks about his length, but I'm more impressed with his footspeed. Kobe is a very hard guy to keep in front of you.

The Lakers should be concerned, but not panicked. They just need one of these next 2 games to get it back to LA. If that happens, the series can easily swing back in favor of the Lakers. Remember, no home team in finals history that has the three game block of the 7 game format has won 3 in a row and the Pistons are not the best home team. They have lost a home game in every series in these playoffs. However, there is a first time for everything too. The counter point to that is the Pistons are an excellent road team and have no qualms about going out and winning a game on the oppositions floor. The Pistons have responded positively to every bit of series swinging adversity thrown their way.

If you look at the stats, you'll see that the Lakers and Pistons shot a similar shooting percentage. The difference in this game was effort. Detroit drove to the basket...in other words, they were aggressive and got 19 more free throw attempts, if I'm not mistaken. Detroit also won all of the hustle plays -- getting offensive rebounds, not quitting on broken plays, etc. Being aggressive, driving to the basket, and hustling on the court like it's your last game requires EFFORT. That was the difference. L.A. underestimated this team, and drowned in their vanity and overconfidence. Still, if the Lakers are to win this series, they won't start playing like they actually care until they lose Game 4.

Even Shaq and Rick Fox admitted that Detroit played with more effort in the post game interviews.

Actually, the Lakers only took two less field goals and twelve more three pointers. The Lakers shot 36% from FG and 22% from three-point while Detroit shot 40 from FG and 33% from three-point. The big difference was free throws in this game, where the Pistons shot 70% from the line on thirty attempts while LA shot just over sixty percent on thirteen attempts. Detroit was way more aggressive than the Lakers, and we could go on arguing about whether or not the Lakers showed up, but this should be a testament to how good Detroit is. They grabbed twelve more boards, scored twelve more points on the fast break. They pushed the Lakers, and whether they were motivated coming into the game or not, they couldn't push back.

And to think if they fouled Shaq, they could be up three-nil.

As I said before, and I'll repeat:

Defense Wins Championships. The Lakers scored a grueling touchdown in Game 2, but the Pistons just ran the kickoff all the way back. Pistons in 6.

It's nice to see at least some of the media finally going "Uh...okay, that time, they just got their asses kicked."

Even ESPN is finally opening up to the idea, that yes, indeed, Detroit just crushed their heads with a proverbial rock. Glorious game.

Did anyone hear the announcers say that people were driving past the Lakers hotel all night last night, honking horns, yelling thing, and blasting loud music? That is just truly badass.

Stephen A. Smith is still refusing to believe that Detroit is better. He is saying "Well I'll give them credit but LA lost tonight because of LA!" or something to that degree and Byron Scott is treating him like a moron.

I think it's even funnier that everyone is comparing Jordan and Kobe and then Kobe has an aboslutely terrible game. Just wonderful. :)

The Pistons look like they have better conditioning than the Lakers. The Lakers can't match the Pistons in energy for 48 minutes.

You still take Screamin A. Smith seriously? I stopped listening to him after about 3 seconds when I first saw him.

Too true. That guy adds nothing to the commentary but bluster and bullshit, much in the same way that Michael Irvin ruins NFL Countdown. I hope Byron Scott bitchslaps him.

Well. there you go.

Luke Waltons one game of effectiveness is over, now someone else is going to have to have one. I think all signs point to Bryon Russell, although I have no idea who he is going to guard when he gets in the game.

The Pistons got NOTHING from Rasheed Wallace due to the GREAT "defense:" of Karl Malone(aka, grabbing his arms as he goes up for the shot) and the quick fouls. But Corliss was a beast against anyone that tried to check him and made up for it.

I said it before the series started and I will say it again. Lindsey Hunter....X FACTOR. That guy just has to be the most annoying defender in the league. He is alway reaching and tugging and pulling and you can see the Laker guards getting annoyed with it. Everyone is saying fisher is not being effective because of his knee. No. Its because Hunter is him with more defensive tenacity and is working him to death out there.

And Rip Hamilton has his shot back. It does not matter who is really on him most of the time, he can get open around those screens, he was just off the first two games(not to take anything away from kobe chasing him wonderfully in game one and some of game two, but Rip was missing alot of freethrows...that says his stroke was off).

Thing is, Billups hasn't had a off game, but the way the Lakers leave him WIDE THE FUCK OPEN, he isn't going to have one. Billups is a streaky player and if they stay in his face that is a good 20 points they could take from the Pistons. Right now the Lakers bench is just to horribly mismatched. It is getting bad when they start readying the excuses for Lakers. Its bullshit when you hear the same annoncers that say "Well, honestly, I don't know how much of a difference Sam Cassell(20 point a game ALLSTAR point guard) and Troy Hudson(Microwave part Deux~!) would make in this series" against the Timberwolves say that the reason the Lakers are struggling now is because of injuries to Karl Malone(who besides one game hasn't done much of anything for the lakers) HORACE FUCKING GRANT, RICK FOX, and a gimpy ankle on DEVEN GEORGE(who isn't showing ANY signs of it...He doesn't even have a half a limp). ITs one way or the other.

If Phil works in Brian Cook and Bryan Russell, the lakers could have a big game. Cook is a physical rebounding forward with a nice midrange game(sound familiar?) and Russell is a vet with shooting range and a tenacious defender. But how desparate will he have to get to go to them?

The Pistions have basically been the better team the entire series and thanks ot a bigass brainfart in game two, the series is only 2-1(although you never know what would have happened in game 3 if it was a 2-0 series. I guarentee you Kobe would have put that ball up more).

Hell of a series we have here people. Its far from over but it has been a hell of a series.

Oh and hurt or not Karl Malone should be suspended for a couple of games.

He SHOULD be suspended(again) for going up to a fan and making phyical contact with him. HOW in the fuck they are going to spin THAT in to saying he isn't suspended will be pretty amazing.

I like Stephan A. Smith, but I didn't like him totally writing the Pistons off as soon as the finals matchup was official.

I know he wasn't the only one in the media to not give them any credit, but it's the first time he said something that annoyed me.

Bah... Malone seems more like a liability to LA now with his bum knee. Keep him in there and watch him get exploited on defense.

You know, everytime they do the whole "Karl Malone...a damn great human being" thing and talk about how he looks forward to retiring and playing with his kids, I can't help but think "So I am guessing you are going to take care of these and not wait until they are stars in college ball and people realize that they are your childredn to acknowledge them like before huh?"

Fucker.
