Renegade 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2004 So far http://cgi.gamefaqs.com/poll/spr04.asp?poll=1613 Street fighter II was beaten by super mario RPG thanks to the retarded nature of the square fanboys. And poor gunstar heroes is being assraped by Link to the past.
Neil-o-Mac 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2004 Word. Mario RPG over SFII? What. The. FUCK? Wouldn't shock me if Doom jobbed to Earthbound in the first round, such is the rampant nature of the Square/Nintendo/RPG blinkered fanboyism there. Ditto Soul Calibur vs. Kingdom Hearts, Metroid Prme vs. Half-Life, FFX vs. Shenmue... My prediction; Either a Zelda game or a Final Fantasy game wins. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2004 Worse then the WWE Folder? By far. Not surprised LttP is smoking Gunstar, if only because lots of people have heard about Gunstar but few have played it. Plus Zelda is a long-running, highly-acclaimed franchise. However, SMRPG over SFII is extremely stupid. Yeah, SMRPG was a really good game, but too short to really be one of the better RPGs around, let alone go over the game that practically created the fighting genre. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2004 This is retarded. Gunstar Heroes owns all! And Super Mario RPG? Who the fuck even LIKED this game? I want to meet them so that I may laugh in their face. Haw-Haw! ;p I liked it. Shenmue... Earthbound isn't a Square game, although it is a Nintendo RPG. Hell, I'd probably vote it over Doom since I don't like the Doom clone genre. Kingdom Hearts is the last actual good game Square has made, and the only good game they've made in a long time, so I could see it going over a game only a few Dreamcast owners had. I never played Half-Life, so I'd go for Prime, a game I really liked. FFX vs. Shenmue...sadly, FFX probably should rightly get the nod, due to the tedious, schizo nature of Shenmue's gameplay. So none of those votes would surprise me, but SMRPG over SFII--that's just wrong.
Jer 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2004 I predicted SMRPG over SF2. You just have to get inside these people's heads, hehe. I'm a little worried about the latter rounds though, when the Square games go up against the Nintendo games. Those matches are hard to call, since there are so many fanboys for both. I've got SMB3, FF6, FF7 and SSBM in the final four, FF6 vs FF7 in the finals with FF7 winning. Yeah it's stupid, but FF7 is just insanely over with the fanboys. Anya 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2004 RPG fans vote for RPGs. So what? Maybe people like Mario RPG more than Street Fighter. How is this "blind Gamefaqs fanboy" thing any worse than the attitude here, where you all scoff at any vote that you don't agree with? I'd vote for Metroid Prime and FFX over Shenmue and Half-Life. OMG what blinkered fanboyism!!!
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2004 RPG fans vote for RPGs. So what? Maybe people like Mario RPG more than Street Fighter. How is this "blind Gamefaqs fanboy" thing any worse than the attitude here, where you all scoff at any vote that you don't agree with? Super Mario RPG is a fun, if childish, extremely easy RPG with little/no real importance other than being "that game Paper Mario wanted to be." Street Fighter II is only one of the most influential video games ever made and created a genre that still thrives today, and still has more gameplay than your typical braindead cinemaventure. I'd vote for Metroid Prime and FFX over Shenmue and Half-Life. OMG what blinkered fanboyism!!! Yeah, those matchups are SO similar a comparison to SFII vs. Super Mario RPG. I'd probably vote the same way even in those cases. I could see Doom getting it over Earthbound too, because of how influential and loved that game is. However, a game with so little importance that wasn't really *that* great and takes about a 10th of the time to finish as a typical RPG doesn't deserve the nod, hell no. If you think so, I brand you an extremely biased fanboy/girl/person. The voting seemed to have more to do with *Mario*, *RPG*, and the Square logo on the box than the actual game's quality. The same goes for FFVII, a game that looks utterly shitastic today, and was itself a rehash of the earlier games, added nothing to the gameplay, and looks laughable today, stacking up against some of the better RPGs out there. I ask again: What is so great about Earthbound? I've heard nothing but good things, but I've played it and went "Meh" The setting was way different from typical fantasy RPGs of the era, many of the traditional RPG play mechanics were given twists upon (ATM machine! I needed that...), and the game is so freakin' bizaare and filled with personality that it's unforgettable. How many RPGs out there have you capturing zombies with special flypaper, traveling to a surrealistic alternate dimension, or battling a cult of people who paint everything blue? The basic gameplay isn't anything special, but the game is so insane it's hard not to like.
chaosrage 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2004 I ask again: What is so great about Earthbound? I've heard nothing but good things, but I've played it and went "Meh" It's great because it's so different from everything else. How many other RPGs take place in modern Earth and let you use an ATM machine, ride a bike, go to shopping malls, buy a house, beat up hippies with baseball bats, fight gas pumps, and order a pizza and have it delieved to you? How many can you think of where you can go from Stonehenge, to Zombie towns, to swamps, to pyrmaids, to deserts, to jungles, to metropolises with skyscrapers, to beach resorts, to traffic jams, to alien bases? And how many are funny and lighthearted instead of dark and complex and angsty? It's nice to have ONE rpg that doesn't take itself serious. It almost seems to poke fun at other rpgs. Close to 10 years later and there's still NOTHING like it. Just talking about it makes me want to play it again, damn you. As far as the gameplay, if you don't have a problem with Dragon Warrior, you shouldn't have a problem with EB. It's still got a couple of slight gameplay improvements. You can see the enemies on the screen and depending on how you fight them determines whether or not you'll get a surprise attack. When you're mortally wounded, your HP doesn't instantly drop to 0. You still have a few seconds to do something making the battles a little bit more exciting without making the game easy. Also you don't have to waste time fighting enemies that are way weaker than you. That's always annoying in every game. Seriously, how you could NOT like earthbound? The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2004 The poll isn't for which is your favorite game of all time (this is directed at the main argument going on) it's for best game ever. Anyone with a lick of sense should be able to put personal bias aside and use enjoyment level as only one factor in determining their vote. I enjoyed Scream a lot more than Schindler's List...but I'm not going to pretend it should be picked over it in a "best movie ever" tournament.
Anya 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2004 A game can be more influential and not be one of the best ever. Mortal Kombat is one of the most influential video games of the 90's and I'm sure many would dispute calling MK one of the best games ever. You may not think Mario RPG was that great, but maybe they do. Maybe they don't like fighting games so they don't like SF II. Or maybe it is a conspiracy just to vote for Nintendo games. Either way it's just "best game ever" and a popularity contest. If that's the case(voting just because it's Nintendo) then shame on them, but it's not really any more obnoxious or fanboyish than declaring that anyone that doesn't like SF II more than Mario is biased. FF VII is still good and I'd vote for it against like anything. Only because of the Square logo and because it's a RPG right? Of course... On an unrelated side note the song "The Extreme" from the FF VIII soundtrack is great.

It wasn't Super Mario Bros. 3 vs. SFII. It wasn't Super Mario 64 vs. SFII. It was Super Mario RPG vs. SFII. A game can be more influential and not be one of the best ever. Mortal Kombat is one of the most influential video games of the 90's and I'm sure many would dispute calling MK one of the best games ever. SFII is influential AND one of the best ever. That's just another reason for it. If Mario Bros. (not SMB, but just MB) beat out SFII, I'd be just as annoyed. Strip away the Mario characters and SMRPG is just a brief, quite entertaining, but ultimately not-that-great a game. Since many early (and many current) RPGs are usually so simple in gameplay aspects and often so cliched and unoriginal, they're a hell of a lot easier to rate against others since they're so formulatic and cut-and-dried. Gameplay was good but nothing too original. Character development was taken for granted since most of them were familiar. The story was nothing special or unique. It gets obvious props for graphics and personality, though. However, better than SFII? Get real. FF VII is still good and I'd vote for it against like anything. Only because of the Square logo and because it's a RPG right? Of course... ...no further questions. Donkey Kong had better be in this contest.

Anya 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2004 It was Super Mario RPG vs. SFII. Yeah, I meant Mario RPG. Strip away the Mario characters and SMRPG is just a brief, quite entertaining, but ultimately not-that-great a game. According to you. However, better than SFII? Get real. I don't think so. Actually I don't think much about Mario RPG at all. I wouldn't have made it a nominee, let alone voted for it. But apparently a lot of people disagree, for whatever reason...but I'm not going to complain about it or suggest that anyone who voted is wrong and must be a fanboy. But then again, I would vote for VII just because it is by Square according to you. So what do I know? I hate Adam Sandler and his unfunny movies, but that little kid in Billy Madison is cool. He is also right, MK is better than Donkey Kong.
